losing their livelihood, people losing their houses. >> so i just want to people to be able to see it rather than just talk about it. >> a business owner along valencia street in san francisco is fed up with a bike lane. the protest, he says he's willing to stage in order to get the city's attention. >> this is ktvu fox two news at 730. the owner's business is near 19th and valencia, right in the heart of the mission district. >> and now it's become caught in a battle between business owners and the city. good evening. i'm jana katsuyama. the two way protected bike lane runs along valencia street in san francisco's mission district. muni built it last summer, saying the area needed to be safer for bikers and pedestrians. but the owner of one store says this development is detrimental to his business. ktvu tom vacar spoke with the owner, who is willing to go on a hunger strike in order to pressure the city to make changes.

>> ed walls family owns yasmeen syrian restaurant and rossi mission sf, an artwork store. he's also in day six of a hunger strike to save his and other businesses from what he calls an intrusive bike lane. >> complete destruction just 100% destruction. at least 20 businesses are gone. five businesses went out last week. at least 30 more businesses. that's about to go out. >> l2 wall says the business deaths will come from a lack of parking for customers and staff deliveries. >> 71 parking is gone. they made it for commercial parking just a few weeks ago. >> i literally got two tickets in one week for unloading my stuff right there on the corner of 19th and valencia, just unloading stuff. it's $92 each ticket. >> despite repeated attempts, l'etoile says the sf municipal transportation agency, the department of public works, will not talk to him and the mayor's office kicked him out. hence the water and juice hunger strike. >> i don't want the bike lane to

be responsible for so many people losing their business. >> so the bikes have one lane each way and the vehicles have one lane each way. for ten minutes. i did a count of both. and it turns out in that same period of time, there were 95 cars and just 32 bikes, three times the amount of vehicles sharing the same amount of lanes, even among cyclists. opinion is sharply divided. >> to come and blame a bike lane for being the downfall of your business, when in fact you're marketing your strategy. any people that you're getting to come to your place? this is maybe more to blame. >> i'm a bike rider and i like the old way. this doesn't help us. it's just changing. like there was nothing wrong with the old one. and i actually do many deliveries to businesses around here. >> the municipal transportation agency says we have talked to the parklet operators on valencia and received their feedback about their loading needs to inform the design process. our outreach and collaboration will continue

through the spring as we work on solutions that best protect both businesses and bicyclists on the corridor. tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news. >> the san francisco police department says it has completed a long list of reforms set out by federal and state officials. back in 2016, the oversight began after a number of controversial, deadly shootings by officers and a racist text message scandal. today chief bill scott said the 272 reforms include improvements in key areas that include reducing the number of shootings, reducing use of force, especially in communities of color, as well as decreasing biased based stops. police and city leaders say the department has transformed itself into a national model. san francisco mayor london breed released a statement on the police department's efforts that reads, quote, i want to thank everyone involved in this effort, including those at sfpd and the community members who have been engaged year after year. i want to thank the

california department of justice and ag, rob bonta, for their partnership on this. this work is a model for reform, but it is not the end of our work. we will continue to do what is necessary to advance both safety and justice in this city. that's how we lead. the napa county sheriff's office says that a north bay high school teacher has been arrested a second time after being taken into custody earlier this week for alleged inappropriate contact with a minor. authorities arrested 41 year old brad raul near his home in sonoma today on the new charges, which include lewd acts with a child and statutory rape. he is a p.e. teacher and a track coach at american canyon high school. he was previously arrested tuesday on the school campus. now he's being held without bail and has been placed on administrative leave in san francisco. a community is rallying behind a mosque that was vandalized earlier this month. the suspect was in court today and is being charged with a hate crime. ktvu is henry lee spoke with people who attend the mosque and who say this attack

feels personal. >> it made me feel reassured that there is there are people care. >> imam mohammed anzali says he's grateful for the quick work of law enforcement and the public support. after an alleged hate crime at a san francisco mosque during the holy month of ramadan, san francisco police say 35 year old robert gray is the man seen here using a skateboard to break windows at the place of worship at polk and sutter. >> i can only say that it speaks volume to see so many people of different ethnicities and such a diverse community come together to basically show solidarity. >> police say gray first came to masjid al-tawhid mosque on april 4th. >> he was armed with what i'm saying is a skateboard. he used to damage and vandalize this mosque. he broke the windows behind us. he then jumped into his car and he fled. >> authorities say gray came back five days later when he made his way inside. >> he made his way into the seating area. the mosque, escorted him out, called us. we looked for him. we couldn't find him. >> police say the suspect came back the next day and was

arrested with the help of the community. >> we're going to continue as a police department to be vigilant. we will drive by mosques and places of worship. >> on friday, gray pleaded not guilty to felony vandalism and a hate crime. we were not allowed to show his face, the prosecutor said. gray has a fixation on the mosque and noted he was out on bail at the time of the crime, after being accused of residential burglary in san mateo county. his attorney asked for a reasonable bail, arguing that although windows were broken, no one was hurt. the judge agreed with the da that his criminal conduct was escalating and denied bail. >> we don't believe that there's any indication that there's a hate crime at all, gray's attorney, jack lamar junior, said he's seen no evidence his client made hateful statements during his second visit to the mosque, as the da alleges, it doesn't appear that these statements have any sort of racial or religious animus attached to them whatsoever. i think that that's a perception. >> those who came out to support the mosque disagree. >> the fear that he has instilled in our community, especially among women and children and elderly that are

attending the mosque when there is such a blatant attack, such a blatant act of hate on a religious institution, on a community that we stand together, the public defender is asking for a medical assessment that will include a mental health evaluation of his client, the defendant's mother was in court but declined to comment. >> in san francisco, henry lee ktvu, fox two news, pg and e is facing another lawsuit over the massive dixie fire. >> the timber company colin pines is asking for $225 million in damage in connection to the 2021 fire, which was determined to have been caused by pg and e equipment. the company says the wildfire burned tens of thousands of acres of timber and trees, as well as damaged their facilities in plumas county, a south bay county will recount the votes from the district 16 election. we'll explain when the results might be ready. >> plus, we're not going to give up and we're not going to close

temperatures for today. in no longer the 80s, we're just talking about some 50s and some 60s, and now we are talking about some rain back in the picture, take a look at some of the highs from this afternoon across the bay area. you can see the warm spots mainly in the mid to upper 60s out towards san francisco 58 degrees. just a couple days ago san francisco was in the lower 70s so we have cooled off. we will continue to cool off into the weekend. forecast highs only in the 50s to right around 60 degrees, and you can see the rainfall expectations about a half an inch to possibly approaching two inches of rain for the santa cruz mountains. so the bulk of the frontal band will be moving. at least the rainfall linked with the frontal band will be tomorrow morning, but still some cold, unstable air could lead to some heavy downpours and maybe some thunderstorms into your weekend. here's the satellite and the radar. right now the organized rainfall is up here, but during the 7:00 hour santa rosa reporting some light rain, at least at the sonoma county airport. so that rain line is approaching, moving in from the north. it is also windy out there. take a look at the current wind reports. they have backed off a little bit, but

vacaville gusting over 20 miles an hour. sfo gusting to nearly 30 miles an hour in the same report out towards san jose. here's a live camera above san francisco for this evening. mostly cloudy skies. current numbers have cooled off. most neighborhoods have cooled off into the 50s for the 7:00 hour overnight. we're going to cloud things up, and we're going to bump up the rain chances. and we could be talking about a band of heavy rain moving across the bay area. that will be linked up with the front. so definitely cool. cooler today that was the headline. now we're watching this front move on board. so that's going to move in first thing tomorrow morning. maybe some thunderstorms. and then the chance of some showers into sunday. but they're thinking that the weather will be an improvement for the second half of the weekend. here we are. this is 4:00 tomorrow morning. this might wake you up and then into the app. this is 7:00. still some rain into the afternoon hours. some off and on, rain showers and maybe some thunderstorms. we're going to hold on to the shower. chance into your sunday was still a lot of cloud cover out there. and i should say this will also be a snow producer out in the sierra. they will pick up around 3 to

6in of snowfall, especially by late saturday afternoon, saturday night and into sunday. shower chance will continue in a sunday, and then we're going to bring back the sunshine and warmer weather into early next week. >> wow, snow still at the end of april. incredible. all right. thank you mark. well, new at 730. a recount is scheduled to begin monday in the 16th congressional district race that ended in a tie for second place. santa clara county plans to conduct a machine recount next week that will run monday through friday. former sam liccardo staffer jonathan padilla requested the recount and is required to pay the costs. the two candidates, evan low and joe simitian, who tied for second place, would both advance to face sam liccardo in november if the recount results in a tie again, it is not clear yet whether san mateo county, which makes up a portion of the district, also will conduct a recount. a bar in san jose has been repeatedly targeted by thieves three times, just this year. well, now the city's mayor and police chief are getting involved. and ktvu is an. reuben spoke with the bar's owners, who

say that if safety doesn't improve, businesses will suffer. >> for owners of the guild house in san jose, this was the last straw. >> a team cuts through the back door with tools, takes the entire safe and leaves, taking thousands of dollars, causing thousands more in damage and it isn't the first time the esports and gaming club has had eight break ins so far three this year alone. every time we've had a break in, we've increased our cameras, we've increased our closing procedures, we've increased our locks and it just is not helping. >> and so they've decided to go public, posting their frustration and video of the crime online that caught the attention of the mayor and the police chief. they toured the guild house today and say combating downtown crime is a priority. >> one of the big things we're emphasizing is presence and visibility. >> through having foot patrols and community service officers down in the downtown core, every day. >> the san jose downtown association has already been

working with local businesses. they alerted police to a serial burglar arrested in february, and now there are reports of at least two other safe thefts. >> right now, we're on an upswing, trent, again, that we need to curb and address the guild house has added more security yet again, and they've gone cashless. >> but they say if downtown safety doesn't improve, businesses will suffer. >> we're not going to give up and we're not going to close our businesses down. but it's just very, it's very frustrating. >> we're a small business. small businesses operate on very thin margins. and, this is just one more hit that, you know, we didn't want to take. >> san jose plans to add bike patrols later this year. they also have something called the crime capture program, where businesses can apply for a free camera. they also plan to focus on increasing police staffing. guildhouse hopes that all this will make a difference in san jose and ruben. ktvu, fox two news a. new music event in the

already sold out on the same day they went on sale. the company behind outside lands is putting on another show the weekend following the outside lands festival. the lineup includes system of a down and deftones. the concert will be held at the golden gate park polo fields on august 17th, and those 50,000 tickets sold out today in just about 90 minutes. first fridays

has returned to oakland. the monthly block party on telegraph avenue kicked off around 5:00 tonight. it's become a gathering place for local artists, performers and small businesses and it typically draws thousands of people. the event has suffered from a lack of revenue, however, and organizers had to pause the event for the first three months of the year due to financial difficulties. we will be having more coverage of tonight's event tonight at ten. more than a dozen rite aid stores are closing across california, including two bay area locations. court documents released this month show the company plans to close storefronts in union city's union square marketplace and in san jose, near storey and white roads. the union city store says it will close at the end of may. the san jose location says it will cease operations may 19th. this is part of a larger plan to close 53 locations nationwide, and rite aid filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy last year, tied to decreasing sales and lawsuits related to opioids. president biden officially declared the start of black maternal health

week through april 17th, according to a report last october by the california department of public health. black women are 4.6 times as likely to die of pregnancy related causes than california women. as a whole, doctor kamala wicks from kaiser permanente east bay, says postpartum maternal care is important because sometimes the health risks show up after the baby is born. >> we know that various underlying conditions means that patients and particular black patients have, prior to the pregnancy, can often manifest themselves during that postpartum period up until the first year, and that may be high blood pressure, diabetes, and even postpartum depression. >> the american recovery act extended postpartum care options last year for medicaid recipients from 60 days to one year to address those health concerns. a big event honoring labor leader cesar chavez is

coming to san francisco tomorrow. the festival starts at 10 a.m. on 24th street between folsom and bryant. the annual parade begins at 19th and dolores at 11 a.m, winding up at mission and 24th. people can enjoy live performancesgames for kids, a lowrider car show, and of course, a variety of food vendors. the late cesar chavez spent decades advocating for farmworkers, and he co-founded the united farm workers union. a home in the south bay not much larger than a small apartment, is listed for nearly $2 million. while its buyers say that the property is worth the price tag. then later tonight on the 10:00 news, caltrans is delaying its planned closure of highway 37 this weekend, with wet weather moving in, plus more support for a plan to rename oakland international airport, where the battle over the name change stands tonight. we'll have those stories and more coming up at ten.

games and the pelicans are on a three game winning streak. we will have all the highlights from this marquee matchup tonight at ten. well, a house that is smaller than many apartments has just been sold in cupertino for an eye popping price. the 384 square foot home you see right there was listed for $1.7 million. it does not have any appliances. it doesn't have any heating, but it does sit on a 7800 square foot lot that is large enough to build a larger home, and that led to a buyer paying well over the asking price for the property is, quite compact in size, but it has a big powerhouse of possibilities, which i think is what drew such huge crowds here over the weekend. >> i'm expecting bigger, but actually it's come out anyway. this is the price in this market . >> the buyer told us she has been looking for at least three months, and she is buying on behalf of another person who does intend to build there. bart
