>> it comes after a tie for second place in the district 16 congressional race. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu, fox two starts now. >> it is the first time two candidates have tied for second place in the 16th district. hello again everyone. >> i'm julie julie haener and i'm mike mibach supervisor joe simitian and assemblyman evan low both received 30,249 votes in the march primary. both are trailing former san jose mayor sam liccardo. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters has more on the recount that gets underway tomorrow. >> melissa michelson is a political science professor at menlo college. she says the second place tie in the district 16 race between evan low and joe simitian is the talk of the town, and it's not surprising that a recount has been requested. >> if you think my guy is going to win in a three way race, there's no need to spend this money for the recount. >> one of the two people making

a recount request is jonathan padilla, a former sam liccardo campaign staffer. padilla posted this message on social media saying why other democrats don't believe in counting votes and ensuring that the will of the people is transparently reflected confuses me. it's especially baffling that many of the folks criticizing the recount i'm proposing have themselves advocated for automatic recounts in the past. >> it might be that somebody in liccardo's camp thinks, oh no, we might lose. if it's three. but if we knock one of those two out, then we have a shot. >> santa clara county's registrar of voters says it will begin recounting votes in district 16 for eight hours each day, starting monday. the registrar says it will take about five days to complete the recount by machine and it will cost about $84,000. >> if we're just going to a machine recount, the outcome is probably not going to change. if it was a hand recount, then i

think the odds are actually a little bit better that we might see a difference. >> san mateo county also makes up a portion of district 16, and it's unclear whether or not someone will request a recount in that county as well. lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news new at 11 a multi-vehicle crash in antioch killed one person. >> the first report of the crash came in 410 this afternoon. police say a lexus suv was driving westbound on west 10th street, and an acura sedan was going northbound on auto center drive. now, the vehicles collided in the middle of the intersection. the 30 year old man driving the acura sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. a battalion chief with contra costa county fire says two survivors were trapped in the other vehicle. >> both of the patients that were extricated from the vehicle required the use of hurst extrication tools from our truck company. >> they were both 33 year old women taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. a jury trial involving

tesla, scheduled to get underway this week in santa clara county. a woman in santa barbara filed a negligence lawsuit against the company, citing defective product design. the lawsuit claims mallory harcourt was eight months pregnant when her toddler got into the tesla and activated the vehicle in december of 2018. harcourt who was in the family garage, placed herself in front of the vehicle thinking it would recognize her and stop, but instead she became pinned between the car and the garage wall. harcourt suffered severe pelvic injuries that she says prompted her to give birth early. just a week later. tesla's attorneys have reportedly argued the unfortunate event was the result of the mother's own negligence in leaving her son unattended. >> four juveniles are now in custody after fairfield police arrested them in connection with anedarjacking. police spotted a car reportedlyinlved t night just before 630. it was traveling eastbound on travis boulevard from interstat. the driver kept going after ofrsried to initiate a traffic stop heading toward a

nearby parking lot. two oe juveniles immediately surrendered. the other were others were found nearby. the driver had a warrant out for his arrest. police say all four suspects are from sacramento. in napa tonight, police continue to search for evidence in a shooting that killed two women. it happened around 8:00 last night on riverside drive near laurel street. residents say this neighborhood has become a recent target of gang graffiti and crime. a witness tells us that some of the girls were in the area, were arguing loudly, then walked toward a building. that's when he heard the gunshots. >> there was a car that pulled up. it was most likely a drive by because it was clean. the transition, they did the gunshots in less than, like five seconds later they were in the car and they sped off, and, you know, down the street. >> police say one victim was pronounced dead at the scene. the second died after being taken to the hospital. law enforcement has not provided a suspect description or

confirmed. if this was a drive by or a gang related incident. >> recent attacks in san francisco county jails have resulted in several deputies being taken to the hospital, and now two jails are on lockdown. ktvu zac sos reports. >> people are getting hurt. it's extremely violent. >> san francisco county sheriffs union president ken lomba speaking out after nine deputies were attacked by inmates at county jails over the last three weeks, some of them taking punches to the head. >> and just this friday, several deputies had dislocated shoulders. >> the day before, another deputy bitten by an inmate so hard that his skin was broken. >> i mean, there's a high risk of disease, being transferred over to you. >> the escalating violence prompting the sheriff's office to temporarily lock down two county jails, one on moreland drive in san bruno, the other on seventh street in san francisco's soma district. >> we're almost like running prisons in san francisco. it's

not a jail environment. >> prisoner on prisoner violence also a concern, according to the union and 2023 county jails saw a 58% year over year increase in prisoner fights. attacks on inmates grew by 79. lomba says. the root cause is a department wide staffing shortage. >> we've been warning the sheriff for years. there needs to be an appropriate level of staff. you need deputies to be there for backup for emergencies, and you need deputies for, you know, command presence as a deterrence and all that's being whittled away. and our staffing is thinning out and there's no aggressive hiring, prompting the union to call on sheriff paul miyamoto, mayor london breed and city supervisor aaron peskin to bring in help from the u.s. military. three california national guard to assist with staffing until the sheriff brings us up to proper staffing. >> in a statement, the sheriff's office calling the union's request, quote, premature and

not necessary at this time, adding, quote, in light of recent incidents in our jails, the sheriff's office is actively working on comprehensive plans to address issues raised by the deputy sheriff's association. we believe that our current internal response strategies will immediately address the increase in assaults on our members. >> i haven't seen any of that happen. it's been four years. our staffing has been collapsing . this needs to be done now. i hope he does it. i really do. >> as for the lockdowns taking place at both jails, unclear exactly what time the sheriff's office plans to lift them. we have been told, though, that they should be resuming normal operations this week in san francisco, zac sos, ktvu, fox two news. >> we're here to get you out. come on, let's go. >> an officer responding to a domestic violence. shots were fired from inside the house. >> scary looking moments. all of it staged. we'll show you how

they tried to pull the man over for expired registration tags and a broken tail light. deputies say during the stop, the man refused to get out of the vehicle. they also learned he had a felony warrant out for his arrest. deputies say the man suddenly drove away, but he crashed a short time later. they say he got out of the car, started shooting at deputies who then returned fire. the suspect was shot and died at the scene. a female bystander was also struck by gunfire and seriously injured, but authorities say she is expected to survive. >> special weapons and tactics. law enforcement officers with specific training in those areas make up swat teams across the west. >> fox eleven's matthew seedorf shows us what happened when he engaged in some of the training in southern california. >> suiting up with la county's top deputies. okay, i'm going to back up behind you. fox 11, exclusively with the department's special enforcement bureau. >> swat teams are setting up now

they were a good 5 to 10 degrees warmer than what we had yesterday, which were low 50s mid 50s. today. we got into the low 60s 63 and morgan hill was with a warm spot. tomorrow temperatures will warm up a good 5 to 10 degrees. so we're going to go into the low 70s tomorrow upper 60s low 70s. and then we'll work our way into the low 80s as we go through this week. so a warmer week ahead spring is back and it's going to feel like it. with pollen counts coming up, especially from the tree pollens. everything's going to start blooming and you'll notice it if you are a hay fever sufferer. the live camera shows the bridge and it shows those traffic and it shows a little. it doesn't show this, but there is a little fog showing up out at montara, out at pacifica. so we got some patchy coastal fog. actually it is showing a little fog isn't it? there you go. okay. and so a little bit of fog showing up at the coast. that fog will be there tomorrow morning. it's kind of fractured. so it's not going to be widespread everywhere. but it'll be patchy and it'll be around in the morning and it'll burn off a little bit in the afternoon,

especially in places like stinson beach and bolinas and over by pacifica high pressure is the story this week. really, what we're looking at is spring pattern. and spring pattern means jet streams. well, to the north, the big high pressure ridge builds in north only. typically, after a couple cool days like this, we would be have a really cold night. but the clouds are kind of hanging in here, so it's going to keep temperatures above freezing like these. lots of upper 30s, low 40s in the coldest spot. so it's just a nice day. but those clouds kind of keep us a little bit warmer. here's tomorrow morning's forecast tomorrow afternoon then. here we are. when? tuesday morning. tuesday afternoon tuesday evening wednesday morning wednesday afternoon. and that's it. and then no rain this week, which is nice. after last week's deal. here's the five day forecast and i'll pop in the weekend so you can peek at it. if you're interested in a bunch of days away. but the weather looks good, it's going to be quite pleasant this entire week. >> yeah, we haven't had a week like this for quite a while. no fail. thank you. shakira made a

to the washington post, robbins died this week at san francisco general from a stroke at the age of 85. well, last year, ktvu claudine wong had a chance to sit down with robbins in her san francisco home. >> she has lived in this home for decades, surrounded by a lifetime of collectibles. in this place filled with stories and art. >> my name is trina robbins. i live here in this ancient house in san francisco, so i am 84 years young. trina robbins describes herself in many ways a feminist and author, and a pioneer in the world of comic books. >> her love of comics started when she was just a little girl. >> which comics do i like? the ones that starred women. the ones that starred men were very boring to me. i wasn't interested in those. so, you know, wonder woman, of course, but not just wonder woman, mary marvel, who was a girl, and all she had to do was say, shazam! and she became this super heroine. and it meant that you

didn't have to wait to grow up to be a super heroine. you could be a girl and have super powers. >> one of her super powers was her ability to draw, and as a young woman, she drew what she describes as little pictures on paper with speech balloons over them. in the 60s, in underground paper started publishing those drawings. her work continued in the 70s when she moved to san francisco in the 60s and the early 70s. >> really, i was one of the few women drawing comics, and the guys didn't like it. i mean, the guys really, you know, they acted as though i didn't exist. you know? but a lot of people loved my comics, and i was one of the founding mothers in 1972 of women's comics, which was an underground publication, an anthology of all women comic artists. you know, i was a pioneer and i am a pioneer.

>> in the 80s, she went from one of a few to the first. that's when dc comics decided its superheroes needed a new look because, you know, superman was 75 years old and he still looks so young and is punching people out, so they had to redo it. >> you know? and they also redid wonder woman, who had been drawing wonder woman before this. oh, guys, it was 40 years of guys drawing wonder woman. not one woman. so but in between creating the new wonder woman, they had four months of no wonder woman. this is the way i see it. it's a room full of editors, and they're saying, what should we do with wonder woman? and someone saying, well, we all know trina likes wonder woman. why don't we just give it to her for four months? and if she screws it up, it doesn't matter because we'll have a guy doing it next. so i did four issues of wonder woman and that made me the first woman to draw a wonder woman comic.

>> she says she drew wonder woman as she knew her strong, muscular, independent. >> oh yeah, of course. i mean, she's a fighter. >> four issues later, she had cemented herself in history. or as she likes to say, her story, not his god. >> i'm a feminist, sure. and her story, in which is what i call myself. >> but she's never only focused on herself, she's no longer drawing, but she is writing, publishing more than ten books about women, including one on the women cartoonists of the jazz age stories, she says, that need to be told. >> yes, and that's what i do. i mean, there was a time when people had never heard of these artists and now they know who these artists are, and everyone who opens this book and looks at the art goes, wow, how come i never saw this before? well you never saw it before because the guys don't write about women and you do. and i do.
