6:00 pm
>> the people of oakland of the bay, all got together to shut it down. this was part of a global call. april 15th economic blockade. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at six. >> and we're also getting late. word of another protest happening right now in fremont, not far from the tesla factory. good evening everyone. >> i'm mike mibach and i'm julie julie haener. here's the latest of what we know so far about the protest. traffic first became disrupted at about 615 this morning on northbound interstate 880 in oakland. that's where protesters blocked the freeway using heavy chains, attaching themselves to drums filled with concrete. the second protest started just before 8:00 on the golden gate bridge, blocking all lanes. protesters there chained themselves to their cars and say they threw their keys into the bay to make it more difficult to remove them. another demonstration took place at about 815 on another portion of interstate 880. in the southbound direction at seventh

street near the port of oakland. according to the chp, more than three dozen people were detained at all three locations. it took several hours to get all lanes cleared, and there is also a protest that just got underway about 30 minutes ago in the city of fremont, ktvu zac sos joins us live tonight. >> all right, zach, where exactly are you here. how big is this one? >> well, for the moment, we are just outside the tesla plant here in fremont, where it is our understanding that this protest is headed, this pro-palestinian protest, this protest against the ongoing war in gaza. for now, those demonstrators are about a half mile down the road from here. you can see our chopper overhead there. they are located at the warm springs bart station. you can see them holding signs. they are organizing their our understanding is they will eventually make their way down fremont boulevard to the plant here, where for the last hour or so, we have been watching police assemble on plant property. there are a number wearing tactical gear across the road,
6:02 pm
on fremont boulevard. there are several, blocking certain parts of the roadway. organizers of this latest demonstration are targeting this plant again as part of a bay area wide effort, and indeed, a national effort today to disrupt the work of large corporations, the global economy. we've seen them taking place on bridges, roads used to ship things for the global economy, to distribute products in the global economy. all of this protest, again against the ongoing war in gaza, gaza, notably, we're also just down the road from 880 and given the blockades that we have seen take place earlier on the day, on major highways, that roadway is certainly something that we will be keeping an eye on to see if this protest eventually makes its way there as well. for now, i'll send it back to you in the studio. >> yeah, zach, you actually bring up a good point there in regards to the golden gate
6:03 pm
bridge being shut down earlier today, 101 and then interstate 80. do you get a sense at all whether or not chp or police officers in fremont are going to allow those protesters, if indeed they get down that close to the interstate to get on to 880 at all, or are they going to prevent them from getting on? >> you know, we haven't gotten any indication of that for now, it seems like their real focus is here at the plant, making sure that they don't distribute, don't disrupt the nighttime shifts that are coming here into the plant. so, for now, again, staging right here, we'll have to keep an eye on it to see if they end up moving closer to the freeway as well. >> all right. we'll continue to watch what happens. zac sos outside the fremont factory there in the tesla factory in fremont. zach. thank you. well, traffic was at a standstill on the golden gate bridge until well after noon. all pedestrian traffic also halted. ktvu christien kafton has that part of the story. >> sky fox had the best vantage
6:04 pm
point to see how the protest on the golden gate bridge unfolded. protesters took over the span shortly before 8 a.m. the california highway patrol saying officers arrested 26 demonstrators here who chained themselves to their vehicles and refused to move. protesters say they chose this site and others around the bay area to draw the most attention and to bring commerce to a halt, all in an effort to halt aid to israel, say a coordinated global effort. >> we are saying that enough of our tax dollars from the united states, one of the largest, the largest ally of israel, we don't want our money going to israel anymore. >> the hours long protest brought traffic to a standstill. lucy dungannon said she had to stop her suv just before crossing onto the bridge. she couldn't go home because she says she's a home health care provider and if she doesn't go to work, no one would be able to care for her patient. >> yeah, they need me because the old lady cannot do anything to her husband. i need to report , right away to their house. >> pat ackerman says protesters
6:05 pm
stopping traffic could wind up alienating even those sympathetic to their cause. >> protest is just not going to help any child in gaza, you know? and or any sympathy, you know, and it's a complicated situation, i know that. but to, you know, to hold up people who are genuinely trying to get to work doesn't help anybody. >> hope folks that think that way look back in history, look at vietnam war, look at other instances where the public's pressure, like we're doing right now, was the only thing that stopped our government from continuing to fund death. pretty much. >> the california highway patrol responded to the protest on the bridge, as well as protests on other bay area freeways. law enforcement said they'd been tracking chatter that something could happen. on april 15th, so we had no specific intelligence. >> there was a decent amount of intelligence about this day. but these specific protests? no, we did not have specific intelligence related to it before noon, a bus loaded with protesters made its way off the bridge, and within a half hour,
6:06 pm
traffic was allowed back onto the span. >> pedestrians and cyclists who were also barred from crossing said they were relieved they could finally cross the iconic bridge. >> i've just realized it's about three in palestine and i completely agree, but we was really disappointed when we came and realized that we couldn't walk across because they might, they said it might take all day to clear it all. >> so then this has to be a relief to see now that you can finally get across. yes, those arrested here at the bridge are now facing a series of charges in san francisco, including unlawful assembly, failure to disperse and blocking the bridge, notably, they're also facing charges for false imprisonment for not letting people go where they wanted to go and for conspiracy. since this effort at the bridge appears to be part of a coordinated effort across the bay area and part of a nationwide day of protests in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> the protesters also caused disruptions and major traffic backups on interstate 880. in oakland, demonstrators took over the northbound lanes of 880 at fifth and embarcadero. >> they made their way onto the
6:07 pm
freeway at about 615 this morning, just as the commute was getting underway. dozens of chp officers were in riot gear, watching as the protesters waved flags and painted the colors of palestine on the highway center median. >> well, there's a genocide going on halfway across the world, and people have to be informed about it. whether it's going to work, whether it's on social media. people need to stay informed of what's going on. babies are dying. >> officers say the protesters used 55 gallon drums filled with concrete and attached themselves to them with chains. the chp says seven people were arrested at 880 northbound. all lanes of 880 northbound then reopened by 115. this afternoon. >> protesters also blocked south 880 at seven street near the port of oakland. about 300 people blocked the interstate at this location. this started around 815 this morning. the first lanes eventually reopened 1230 this afternoon. this protest also affected operations at the port of oakland, which protesters say was their

ultimate goal for an autonomous get together with no backing by any organization. >> the fact that the people of oakland of the bay all got together to shut it down. this was part of a global call. april 15th economic blockade in support of palestine and considering i-80 south was shut down for about five hours. that's a big hit on the economy. we have 32 different languages spoken here at the port, so it's all minorities, immigrants that support the palestinian cause. >> and they want this to stop, behind us, you see, a lot of them are white. probably jewish, that are supporting this also tonight, the port says all marine terminals were suspended there at the port for the entire day. >> as a result of the protest. the chp says five people were arrested at that location. >> protests across the country snarled traffic in major cities, including new york and in chicago. >> ktvu heather holmes has been monitoring the situation for us.
6:09 pm
she joins us here in studio with the latest. >> heather. yeah, as we mentioned, this was a nationwide effort, as we saw right here in the bay area. organizers called for a national strike demanding an end to u.s. support to israel. so i want to show you now what happened in chicago. police arresting at least 40 people who disrupted traffic there. this was to the main routes to o'hare airport. some frustrated travelers ended up having to walk to their terminals to catch flights. this morning in new york city, there were a number of pro-palestinian demonstrations. one large group ran onto the manhattan bound side of the brooklyn bridge, bringing traffic there to a standstill. at one point, demonstrators were seen lighting flares and throwing them into the east river, with bicycle police in pursuit. eventually, officers corralled those protesters on a pedestrian walkway and arrested several people. and we also go to eugene, oregon, where dozens of demonstrators blocked the i-5 freeway there. police say they ordered the protesters to disperse before taking them into custody. earlier today on the four, we spoke with usf
6:10 pm
professor stephen zunes about what's driving the escalation of these protests. >> it's a sizable majority of americans, according to polls, believe that us military aid to israel should be conditional on human rights. a sizable majority support an immediate permanent cease fire. and yet the biden administration and the congressional leadership of both parties so far have not been willing to take that position themselves. and when you see that kind of gap, that's when you see these more militant, kind of protests, such as shutting down freeways and bridges. >> and we have an update now from chicago this afternoon, a crowd of dozens of protesters clashed with police. there as they marched through downtown. about 200 officers set up a perimeter to try to contain the marchers. so far, no word of any arrests there. antiwar protesters, though, have demonstrated in chicago almost daily since the start of the israeli offensive against hamas, the gaza war has killed more than 33,000 palestinians and

>> the world is waiting for israel's response after iran launched a barrage of hundreds of drones and missiles toward israel over the weekend. >> this was an attack unprecedented in its scope and in its scale. >> the israeli war cabinet reportedly disagrees about the timing and the scale of a potential counterattack, but israeli officials generally seem to agree something must be done if someone wants to annihilate us, wipe us off the map, we're not just going to sit idly by. the attack on israel coming after iranian officials claimed an israeli airstrike destroyed iran's consulate in syria earlier in april, the israeli military says 99% of the missiles from this weekend's attack were intercepted. the us claiming credit for shooting down many of them. >> this attack failed because it was defeated by israel, by the united states and by a coalition of other partners committed to israel's defense. >> however, president biden has told israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu that the us would not join in a

and told her that the whole prison is going to shut down. esther aguirre, 61 year old mother, is an inmate at the all female federal prison in dublin. >> but now the prison is being shut down and all 600 women are being moved to points unknown. >> like, where are they going to take my mother to now? you know, like it's just wrong? well, for all them girls in there, you know, i feel for all of them. >> on monday morning, ktvu spotted busses coming into the prison, which has been wracked by a sex abuse scandal involving inmates and guards. the bureau of prisons says they're shutting the dublin facility because, quote, it is not meeting expected standards. the agency says the closure may be temporary and will result in what it called a mission change. it's not clear what that means, and that worries people like lisa, whose niece is at the prison. >> she's petrified because she doesn't know where she's going. she's sick and she is supposed to be released immediately. >> the federal judge overseeing reforms held an emergency hearing monday and directed the special master in charge of the prison to make sure inmates are properly transferred to other prisons, halfway houses, home confinement or given

compassionate release. >> i think this is a good step in the right direction. clearly, the prison was not being properly run. it had poor management, but attorneys representing inmates blasted the government for the last minute announcement. >> and the fact that they would take that approach at this last second without any kind of warning, is shameful. >> frankly, they say they'll continue to advocate for the women no matter where they end up. >> the government can't avoid accountability just by changing a policy or closing a facility. scrutiny is still necessary, and they can't just shift the burden to one facility or another. >> we've learned all the transfers should be completed by friday, and that the closure will not affect prison staff in dublin. henry lee ktvu, fox two news we have new information on a shooting in napa that left two young women dead. >> it happened saturday night on riverside drive near laurel street. late today, napa police said the two victims were 17 and 19 years old, and investigators don't believe the shooting was

more of the same, which is breezy along the coast, some patchy coastal fog, and then temperatures generally in the 70s, and even some maybe some low 80s as we kind of wobble through the week here. but overall we're going to hover in the mid 70s, maybe 78, maybe 74, kind of like that right through the week into the bay area weekend along the coast. it will be cooler, obviously, for the for the fog that will be there. and if we look at the satellite, you can see the fog kind of sitting offshore, but no fog showing up necessarily on the satellite. but we'll see some coastal fog again tonight and we'll see temperatures tomorrow rebound a good five degrees warmer probably than they were today. so you'll notice the warming again tomorrow. pretty pleasant. i'll see you back here . we'll do the full forecast. just a few minutes. >> all right bill, thank you. a new tiny home community opened today in san francisco for people experiencing homelessness. mission cabins is located on mission street near the 16th street bart plaza. the community features 60 cabins for temporary shelter, each one has a bed, storage space, a desk, and heating. the site also includes bathrooms, a dining

of mid 70s tomorrow. pretty nice day overall. and that's the trend. this entire week is just sort of a mild to warmer right through the week. when i say mild mid 70s mid 60s to mid 70s right through the week, i don't know. we might see an 80 degree reading, but it's all just hovering right there which is fine. green showing up on the live camera shop. everything's green. it's got a ton of rain last few months and it's continuing to green up the hillsides in there. still green. it's amazing though, if you notice, as we get into well, heck, as we get into june, it doesn't take long for them to turn brown again. it's amazing actually, but in the meantime we can enjoy the green as it sits. the high pressure is going to stay put, and this high pressure is going to basically just keep us dry, keep us warm, allow the fog, the coastal fog to reestablish itself to some degree. so that's the story. this whole week. and quite frankly, that that could be the story the next couple of weeks. the models are indicating that
6:50 pm
that pacific high, the big high that sits here is, is likely to stay put and long range models. right. but this week it is so we'll see how that goes. but we aren't going to be wet. we're going to see pretty pretty mild conditions right through the week. pleasant. and then of course hay fever tree pollens mostly tree pollens. right now will start to be bothersome as we go through the next. certainly the next 3 or 4 days forecast overnight lows above freezing and then the model. so this is tomorrow morning and this is the whole week is the subtleties are pretty subtle if you will. we've got like a few clouds, a few clouds. and then wednesday more clouds, wednesday afternoon a few more clouds. and then thursday more clouds. and that's why temperatures on thursday will come down a little. just the clouds are the thing that are going to keep us out of the 80s. i suspect the forecast highs for tomorrow. very pleasant. microcline it's setting up. you got the mild to cool coast, mild to warm around the bay and then warm and pleasant inland. there's a five
