country, including right here in the bay area, bringing traffic to a standstill for hours. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> the pro-palestinian demonstrators blocking freeways and bridges in several major cities. nice to have you with me on this monday night. i'm heather holmes. it was, though, a rough start to the workweek for many commuters today, as those calling for a ceasefire in gaza took over. several bay area locations want to start in oakland, where protesters blocked northbound interstate 880 starting around 615 this morning. they used chains to attach themselves to large drums that were filled with concrete. then, a couple of hours later, just before 8 a.m, demonstrators blocked the golden gate bridge protesters chaining themselves together in parked cars and another demonstration at about 815 on a different portion of interstate 880 southbound at seventh street, right near the port of oakland, according to the chp. more than three dozen

people were detained at three locations. it took several hours to remove the protesters and to get traffic moving again. and tonight we're learning of yet another economic blockade happening now. ktvu s crystal bailey is here with a protest in fremont, right near the tesla factory. >> well, heather, it's happening in more than 50 cities around the world today. sending the message to the global economy for its, quote, complicity in israel's conflict with palestinians in gaza. the protests continue tonight at the warm springs bart station in fremont, where a couple dozen people gathered and are on their way to the tesla factory about a mile away. the group a1 five action, toting their palestine flags as part of their day of action. police are staging their squad cars on the tesla property in preparation, but so far the protest has remained peaceful. their goal to disrupt the work of large corporations like tesla , especially given elon musk's relationship with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> what's going on with the war

and everybody should stop. this is a day for, for, for protesting. this is a day that everybody should stop what they're doing and protest for palestine. it's like absolutely unconscionable what israel is doing. >> and especially as a jewish person, i feel like it's my duty to say that, yeah, israel is a settler colonial state committing genocide against the palestinian people. >> and it's all happening near 880, the same interstate, where, of course, heather mentioned the blockade happened earlier, where traffic was stopped in oakland. at this time, the protesters are moving along kato road on their way to tesla, but they don't appear to be blocking traffic. our crew on the ground says traffic is backed up because there are police stationed at all tesla entrances, but were of course, keeping, of course, keeping a close eye on that. and we'll have more on the protest tonight at ten. heather. >> all right. as you mentioned, a national day of protest. we also say saw some demonstrations in new york, chicago and eugene, oregon. crystal, thank you. back to that major protest, though, here in the bay area on the

golden gate bridge, as we take a live look at the iconic bridge tonight where traffic is moving along fairly nicely earlier today, though, traffic, it came to a complete standstill when protesters chained themselves through tubes to other people who were inside stopped vehicles. the demonstrators say they wanted to disrupt traffic to draw attention to u.s. taxpayer funds being used for military aid. for israel's ongoing war with hamas in gaza, and also happened on the same day that federal income tax returns here in the u.s. are due, say, a coordinated global effort. >> we are saying that enough of our tax dollars from the united states, one of the largest, the largest ally of israel, we don't want our money going to israel anymore. >> the chp also halted pedestrian and bicycle traffic across the span. some drivers stuck in traffic are sympathetic to the protesters cause, but they say they disagree with their methods. >> test. is this not going to help any child in gaza, you know, and or any sympathy, you

know, and it's a complicated situation, i know that. but to, you know, to hold up people who are genuinely trying to get to work doesn't help anybody. >> around 1215 this afternoon, the golden gate bridge was finally reopened with 26 people there arrested. over in the east bay, protesters caused a major traffic backups on interstate 880 in oakland. as i mentioned, the demonstration took over the northbound lanes at fifth and embarcadero around 615. the closure of the nimitz freeway not only affected the morning commute, it also hampered operations at the port of oakland, where all of the container terminals were closed, essentially shutting the port down. >> the fact that the people of oakland of the bay all got together to shut it down. this was part of a global call. april 15th economic blockade in support of palestine and considering i-80 south was shut down for about five hours. that's a big hit on the economy. >> the chp says seven people were arrested here. all lanes of

880 northbound reopened by about 115 this afternoon. and earlier today on the four, we spoke with usf professor stephen zunes. and he told us that many americans support the positions taken by the demonstrators, if not their tactics. >> a sizable majority of americans, according to polls, believe that us military aid to israel should be a conditional on human rights. a sizable majority support an immediate permanent cease fire. and yet the biden administration and the congressional leadership of both parties are so far have not been willing to take that position themselves. and when you see that kind of gap, that's when you see these more militant kind of protests, such as shutting down freeways and bridges. >> as anti-war protesters have demonstrated in many cities almost daily since the start of the israeli offensive against hamas. demonstrators say that the deaths of more than 33,000 palestinians should demand the world's attention, as protesters wage demonstrations here in the bay area. the israeli war

cabinet is weighing its next move while trying to avoid a larger escalation with iran. the cabinet reportedly disagrees about the timing and the scale of a potential counterattack, but israeli officials generally seem to agree that something must be done. president biden has told israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu that the us will not join in a counteroffensive against iran. house republicans met today to discuss sending more funding to israel and to stay on top of developments in the middle east and bay area reaction. be sure to visit our website at ktvu.com. all right, a little closer to home now and new at 730 tonight, police in redwood city looking for a thief who stole several packages from a home. but one of them contains a wedding dress. officers say last thursday, a man went to a home near adams and madison, just a block west of highway 82. here's some ring camera video of him and stole several packages before walking away. the homeowner tells police one of those packages, including a wedding dress, included a

wedding dress worth about $2,000. so if you have any information on the man's identity seen here in this surveillance footage or his whereabouts, you're asked to give redwood city police a call. a federal women's prison in the east bay, rife with scandal, is now closing the bureau of prisons, making that announcement today. ktvu henry lee tells us the decision comes after investigations into rampant sexual abuse against inmates. >> she's, scared. she don't know what's going on. she they came and told her that the whole prison is going to shut down. esther aguirre is 61 year old. >> mother is an inmate at the all female federal prison in dublin. but now the prison is being shut down and all 600 women are being moved to points unknown. >> like, where are they going to take my mother to now? you know, like it's just wrong. well, for all them girls in there, you know, i feel for all of them on monday morning, ktvu spotted busses coming into the prison, which has been wracked by a sex abuse scandal involving inmates and guards. >> the bureau of prisons says they're shutting the dublin facility because, quote, it is

not meeting expected standards. the agency says the closure may be temporary and will result in what it called a mission change. it's not clear what that means, and that worries people like lisa, whose niece is at the prison. she's petrified because she doesn't know where she's going. >> she's sick and she is supposed to be released immediate. reporter. >> the federal judge overseeing reforms held an emergency hearing monday and directed the special master in charge of the prison to make sure inmates are properly transferred to other prisons. halfway houses, home confinement, or given compassionate release. >> i think this is a good step in the right direction. clearly, the prison was not being properly run. it had poor management, but attorneys representing inmates blasted the government for the last minute announcement. >> the fact that they would take that approach at this last second without any kind of warning, is shameful. frankly, they say they'll continue to advocate for the women no matter where they end up. >> the government can't avoid accountability just by changing

sweet baby. >> six months after constant treatments. ktvu krystal bailey tells us tonight the little girl was born after only 23 weeks, and doctors predicted that she might not survive. >> you smiling? yeah, i see that smile. >> sarah was born on october 16th, weighing just 12oz, her feet the size of a quarter. her hands squeezing the tip of a pinky finger. it was definitely a shock to see how small she was. paris sweeney austin was five months pregnant when sarah was born. >> saori means holy and sacred in japanese.

>> at 23 weeks and two days, because of an infection, paris was induced to save both mom and baby. saori is the earliest and tiniest baby to arrive at sutter's alta bates in berkeley. her care team says it was challenging to give the micro-preemie nutrition because her veins were too small for an iv, her throat too small for a standard tube, even her diaper. >> the smallest diaper we have was too big for her. >> sarah spent six months in the hospital. doctors say the odds were not in her favor, but now she's weighing nearly 10 pounds. >> sarah is breathing on her own. she is very active, and she's drinking all her food with her bottle, with her mom and it's just. that's what makes this so incredible. >> she's a miracle. she just really is. >> and as nurses packed her things and prepared paris for care at home. >> and that's the vitamin d, is there? okay >> she says prayer was her saving grace. it's been, pretty

had out there giving you a look here at the sunset? we have sunset at 745, and you can see it there just behind the building as it sinks into the pacific. we did have those temperatures come up today, as expected, anywhere from 3 to 6 degrees above where we were yesterday as santa rosa checking in 70 this afternoon, morgan hill, also 70. and we do expect another warm up for tomorrow, 3 to 6 degrees above what we enjoyed for today. look here from up above where it's quiet out there partly cloudy skies. we could have a little bit of patchy fog to start the day tomorrow, and the low clouds once again, but this ridge is going to be in control of our weather pattern for the next couple of days. the system that brought us the low snow and the very chilly temperatures, as well as the rain now parked over areas of like colorado. the futurecast here shows you exactly what i'm talking about. you can see the curvature there of the ridge tuesday afternoon, so it will be strengthening in bringing us even warmer weather than today. wednesday looks like

it could be a near repeat thursday it starts to break down. notice you don't see the ridge any longer. it's way down there towards southern california, so temperatures are expected to cool a little bit late in the week. but the forecast models keep us dry through the weekend and i'll show you those numbers here momentarily. let's take a look at the current conditions. 59 degrees right now where we have the oakland a's playing out of the coliseum this evening. and temperatures for tomorrow morning. off to a very cool start. although not quite as cold as this morning. pair of 48 for san francisco as well as oakland and the afternoon highs for tomorrow. going to be well above average by six degrees, like in areas of santa rosa where you'll go to 7566. in the city of san francisco, 73, in redwood city. the extended forecast even warmer on wednesday, holding foot on thursday before we cool things down ever so slightly into the weekend. still looking good. mid to upper 70s for inland cities for the weekend. heather. >> rosemary thank you. a controversial public restroom is now finally open in san

valley neighborhd finally open. it's a prefabricated unit that originally costround $1.7 million. it's in the noe valley town square, right there on 24th street. the city has faced a lot of criticism for the high construction costs and delays associated with the toilet's installation. meantime, mayor london breed is out with a new

plan to try to save the city some time and money on small projects like that public restroom. the new legislation would allow city departments to use the cost savings of cooperative purchasing of goods when building or renovating public facilities in projects under $5 million. now right now, departments can work together to get group discounts when buying equipment or vehicles. the plan here would add construction to this list. the legislation is set to be introduced at tomorrow's board of supervisors meeting. well, the recount is now underway in that hotly contested race to replace congresswoman anna eshoo. santa clara and san mateo counties began recounting the votes from the march primary election. the congressional race ended in stunning fashion, with assembly member evan lowe and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian tying for second place. former san jose mayor sam liccardo came in first by more than 8000 votes. election officials say they brought in more staff to make sure that things run smoothly.

san francisco chronicle. aramark sent a letter to employees last friday telling them not to speak to the government. media or press about aramark's business matters on the company's behalf, the letter said. anyone who breaks the policy will be subject to discipline, including possible termination. aramark tells ktvu its employees are allowed to speak publicly on their own behalf. the letter comes shortly after the a's announced that they would be laying off workers ahead of their move to sacramento. warriors star klay thompson securing a title, edging out a teammate this season. thompson shot 92.7% from the free throw line. that was an nba best sunday. he went five for five at the charity stripe, and had he

not made all of his free throws well fellow warrior. of course i'm talking about steph curry would have finished with the best free throw shooting percentage in the league. curry shot 92.3% from the free throw line this season. i'm sure he's happy though for his buddy klay thompson. all right. a new exhibit is open at san jose state university's king library. the exhibit is called south asians in silicon valley. it highlights the history and cultural contributions from communities like afghanistan, bangladesh, india and sri lanka, and how they've shaped the landscape of technology and entrepreneurship in the region. for more on this exhibit, we spoke on the floor with montre roy, the curator of this new exhibit. >> at least 20% of santa clara county is south asian, right? and san jose state university is international. students like about 60% of them come from south asia. and we know san jose state is a very serious feeder to silicon valley's tech world.

so, you know, there itself that itself is a proof of how much, you know, south asians bring to the community here to the tech sector. >> this exhibit is the first in a series. in fact, all of these exhibits will highlight south asian music and feature south asian zjsu students as well as alumni. well, a new report released today from the stanford from stanford finds that artificial intelligence is in fact, smarter than humans. in some aspects. the report finds that ai surpass human performance on several benchmarks, including some in image classification, visual reasoning, and the understanding of english. however, it found that humans are smarter with more complex tasks such as competition level math. that's going to do it for me tonight for the news at 730. really appreciate you tuning in. don't forget to download the fox local app right there to your smart tv , and hope to see you right back here tomor w night for the news 7
