on sites from silicon valley to seattle to the east coast are heading a coordinated day of action. their target is their employer. demonstrators are outraged that google and other tech firms are supporting israel in its war against hamas. ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary live at the scene to bring us what's happening. jesse garcia, good afternoon to you and the demonstrators just left a short time ago. >> they began their day of action about 45 minutes ago here in sunnyvale. they used a bullhorn to give their collective voices strength. they say google's lack of response to their opposition of the company's involvement with the state of israel and the idf is what brought them to this point. let's go ahead and take a look at our video. about three dozen google employees rallied in front of the company's cloud headquarters here in sunnyvale. they took their complaints directly to the office of ceo thomas kurian. demonstrators occupied his office in building four here at the cloud complex and read a list of demands.

organizers say google must end project nimbus. it's a $1.2 billion contract for cloud services that provide facial recognition, big data analysis and object tracking, just to name a few. they say this technology can be used by the idf in its war against hamas that's being fought in gaza. >> we demand an end to the contract project nimbus. we demand that google execs drop project nimbus now and we also demand that google protect their arab, muslim and palestinian workers who are speaking out against project nimbus and who have been facing harassment, suppression and retaliation at work. >> demonstrators concede there's no proof project nimbus is being used against civilian populace in gaza, but they believe it could and want the contract canceled. now, this is one of several days, days of action or sites today here in the south bay in seattle and also in new

york city. now coming up later this afternoon, it's one thing to have a protest at your work site. it's another. if you could face blowback or consequences for such action. we'll talk about that coming up at 4:00 and 5:00 this afternoon. for now, we're live in sunnyvale. jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. garcia, back up to you in oakland. >> i'll take it from here. thank you so much, jesse. meantime, to this, we're learning more about the lens. law enforcement had to go through in order to clear out protesters blocking 880 and the golden gate bridge. we carried the breaking news live throughout yesterday morning. pro-palestinian protesters say this was a way of creating an economic blockade in the bay area and around the world. ktvu amanda quintana has more on the arrests. >> it's like all your fingers let go and let go of the let go. let go out there twisting it. let go for no reason. let go of the bar. let go. let go of the bar. >> in a video put out by chp on social media, you can see the device used by protesters on northbound 880. in oakland. each

protester chained to these 55 gallon drums filled with rebar and concrete, with heavy duty pipes and chains known as the sleeping dragon technique. >> you have to cut the cut the barrel, you got to jackhammer the concrete, and then you have to basically cut the rebar that's in there in order to remove it. you can imagine how complex that is for officers. i'm very impressed that they got it opened as quickly as they did, considering what we had to do. >> all seven protesters were arrested and it took seven hours to clear all lanes. a few exits away, going southbound on 880, there are about 300 protesters. five of them were arrested again, taking five hours to clear all of those lanes. protesters stopped traffic on the golden gate bridge to. >> you can protest any which way you want, but it is unlawful to block a roadway and to prevent people from getting to work. emergency personnel from getting to help people. you can't do it.

>> photos show protesters use their cars with the same chains and pipe technique to connect drivers to people outside the cars. it took more than four hours to clear and 26 people were arrested there. >> i implore people, please protest. we're here to protect your rights to protest, but you cannot block roadways. >> this was all part of a planned effort known as a15, with protests happening around the world. chp says they had an idea something would happen on april 15th but didn't know any details. chp has put out a long list of the various charges they'll be recommending, including unlawful assembly, refusal to comply with a lawful order, resisting false imprisonment and unlawful stop on a bridge for those on the golden gate. now it's up to the alameda and san francisco county district attorneys to charge them. last night there was also a protest at the fremont tesla plant, where officers deployed pepper balls on the crowd. but there were no arrests at that protest in oakland. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news and

earlier today, fremont police told us no arrests were made during a pro-palestinian demonstration outside the tesla factory. >> protesters demanding an immediate ceasefire in gaza hope to disrupt operations. yesterday evening, dozens of protesters clashing with police in riot gear just outside the facility. officers say they were finally forced to use pepper balls to break up the crowd. organizers of the march and rally say they had a reason they targeted tesla. they say the protest was in response to ceo elon musk's decision to invite israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu to the fremont plant last year. >> main reason was inviting netanyahu out here to tesla and what's going on with the war and everybody should stop the protesters managed to cause a temporary backup of the supply trucks that were trying to enter the tesla plant along kato road. >> the demonstrators say they felt the need to express their outrage and sadness over the war between israel and hamas that began more than six months ago. >> i haven't slept at night or days as much as i suppose i

usually do, i so it's in my heart, in my mind, in my in my family also my family, my kids, everybody is hurting very bad. >> california highway patrol officers were called in to make sure the protesters outside the auto plant did not move on to nearby interstate 80. authorities estimate in all, more than 80 people took part in this demonstration. >> convicted killer scott peterson appeared in court this morning via zoom from a state prison as ktvu james torres reports. peterson's attorneys are laying the groundwork to ask for a new trial from inside the san mateo county hall of justice in redwood city, a screen showed scott peterson, nearly 100 miles away, listening and waiting from mule creek state prison. >> his defense attorneys. as of january, the la innocence project, a nonprofit specializing in taking up cases for people who may have been wrongfully convicted. they are ultimately asking the court for

a new trial because, they say, new information from discovery and evidence, as well as new witnesses, may prove peterson was not his wife's killer, as a court convicted him to be more than 20 years ago today, those lawyers asked the court to seal the identities of the potential new witnesses coming forward, but then withdrew that request. paula carney, a criminal defense attorney, not on the case, explains why the defense basically withdrew their motion. >> because really, most of what they were asking for regarding sealing was already under seal. >> prosecutors say much of what the defense is asking for is already under seal or redacted from the public record. these lawyers will meet at least two more times in the coming months to discuss dna testing on a mattress found at a home burglary near the peterson's residence. defense attorneys say that wasn't processed in the trial 20 years ago, an attempt for these new lawyers to poke

holes in the prosecution's conviction to have enough of an argument to call for a new trial. reporting from redwood city. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> new information now on saturday's double homicide in napa that left two young women dead. we've learned three people have been arrested. napa police say the swat team arrested 22 year old john nicholson last night in vallejo on suspicion of two counts of murder. two other people were arrested on suspicion of aiding in a felony. police say despite the arrests, they still want to talk to anyone who has information about the killings. the san francisco airport commission is preparing for possible legal action against the port of oakland over proposed name change for the oakland airport. the commission met this morning and held a conference with legal counsel in closed session. they discussed potential claims by san francisco against the port of oakland, claims include trademark infringement and trademark dilution arising from the proposed renaming of oakland airport. the port commission voted unanimously last week to

take the first step in renaming the airport san francisco bay entered oakland international airport. the decision came despite the threat of a lawsuit from san francisco. >> the santa clara county board of supervisors will review a report on the impact of the closure of the trauma center at regional medical center in san jose. the medical center plans to shut down its trauma center on august 12th, saying it has seen fewer patients in the last few years. the trauma center treats people suffering from severe heart attacks, major car accidents and strokes. opponents of the closure say it could lead to delayed care for patients in east san jose. alameda county district attorney pamela price is set to face a recall election . the county registrar says there are enough valid signatures for the recall to proceed, even with the disqualification of nearly 50,000 signatures, the county board of supervisors will consider the registrar's certification on april 30th. organizers of the recall say it sends a clear message that the people of alameda county demand accountability and ethical leadership from their elected officials. this is a wake up

marked it down as a legal expense. some accountant i didn't know marked it down as a legal expense. i should be right now in pennsylvania, in florida, in in many other states, north carolina, georgia campaigning. >> former president donald trump returning to a new york courtroom tuesday. the search for 12 jurors and six alternates continues in its hush money trial. once they are selected, they will be tasked with deciding whether the former president is guilty of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal during the 2016 presidential race. he has pled not guilty. there's no chance of a fair trial here, remember, just because it's a jury doesn't mean that the judge can't sway them to go one way or another or make things difficult. >> so that jury selection is impossible. >> on monday, the first group of 96 prospective jurors were asked if they could be fair and impartial. more than 50 said they could not be and they were dismissed. one of the prospects said, quote, i feel that no one

is above the law. whether it's the former pres, the sitting pres or a janitor, another woman left the court telling an officer, quote, i just couldn't do it. by law, the president must attend the trial every day. >> the implications of this are far deeper for this country, because if in america we are able to just manipulate the law when convenient in the fabric of this country is irreparably damaged. >> jury selection could take about two weeks. the trial expected to go through june in new york. i'm eric shawn, ktvu fox two news. >> voters in berkeley head to the polls today to elect a new city council member. uc berkeley student cecilia luna parra and james chang are facing off in a special election for district seven, which includes the cal campus. today's election is to fill the seat left vacant by rachel robinson, the berkeley councilman, abruptly resigned in january, citing harassment and threats from members of the public in the race to replace retiring silicon valley congresswoman anna eshoo. the actual physical recounting of ballots is about to start. the

recount process began monday with both the santa clara and san mateo counties verifying the accuracy of their tabulation machines. the district 16 congressional race features former san jose mayor sam liccardo, who received the most votes in the march primary election. the other two candidates tied for second place assemblymember evan low and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian. >> this is a machine recount, so that means it'll go relatively quick. but before we do that, we have to do what's called a logic and accuracy test on our voting system. >> political analysts say that lo and simitian would likely oppose a recount, as one would be eliminated from the race. they note a recount would likely help liccardo in that the vote would be split between his challengers in the november general election. the recount is expected to take up to a week. >> the justice department is preparing to file a lawsuit, an antitrust lawsuit, in fact, against ticketmaster and its parent company, live nation, according to the wall street journal. the lawsuit will claim live nation has engaged in anti-competitive practices. the company has faced accusations of inflated ticket fees and flawed

francisco, as well as oakland. we will continue to see those temperatures warm into the afternoon and going to be several degrees above the seasonal average. very quiet out there. storm tracker two not picking up on any rain for today, tomorrow or even the extended forecast. we do have this ridge of high pressure that will be strengthening for the next day or two, and that will bring us the warmer weather still to come. by the weekend. the numbers trend downward just a little bit, then back up. but all in all, only subtle changes expected. here is a look at the future cast into the afternoon and tonight. notice we do have a little bit of cloud cover out there. those mid and high level clouds joining us, providing us with a nice little sunset. just about 746 a comparison from yesterday into today. notice 3 to 6 degrees warmer compared to what we had on monday and above average for this time of year. a better look at some of these numbers on the peninsula for today. we'll go 74 in redwood city, mid 70s for concord and in the north bay, 73 expected for

this comes as baltimore officials announce a new partnership to pursue legal action. madeline rivera reports. >> three weeks after baltimore's francis scott key bridge collapsed, crews continued to use a massive crane to move the metal and concrete to a salvage yard. officials announcing monday teams recover the body of a fourth missing construction worker at the site over the weekend. two others remain missing. attorneys for families of two of the victims allege the workers did not receive proper warning before the incident. they are calling for a thorough investigation. >> what does justice look like? we don't know the answer because what is the value of six lives that have been destroyed? there's no measure. there's no price you can put on it.

>> meanwhile, baltimore mayor brandon scott announced monday the city has partnered with two law firms to take legal action against those responsible for the collapse. it comes after the ship's owner and operator filed court documents asking for any liability to be capped at $43 million. the mayor, writing in a statement, quote, we are continuing to do everything in our power to support everyone impacted here and will continue to recognize the human impact this event has had. city officials also announcing programs to assist businesses and workers impacted by the tragedy. the white house promising ongoing federal support. >> we're going to continue to talk with the maryland delegation of what they need and how much this is going to cost to get that going. >> the fbi is also getting involved, opening up a criminal investigation into the events leading up to the collapse in washington. mala rivera, ktvu, fox two news. >> thursday will mark the 118th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake and fire in san francisco. every year, people gather at lotta's fountain on market street at 5:12 a.m. to

commemorate the moment the 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck lotta's fountain was a gathering place for san franciscans in the time after the earthquake, where they could connect with their community and learn of recovery and rebuilding efforts. the golden fire hydrant in the mission district, also celebrated as one of the few that still functioned that day. city leaders say the anniversary should serve as a reminder to us all that we should remain prepared for a major earthquake. house impeachment managers walked two articles of impeachment against homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas across the capitol to the senate, forcing senators to convene a trial on the allegations that he has willfully and systemically refused to enforce immigration law while the senate is obligated to hold a trial under the rules of impeachment, once the charges are walked across the capitol, the proceedings may not last long. democrats are expected to try to dismiss or table the charges later this week before the full arguments get underway. republicans have argued there should be a full trial. >> the u.s. supreme court denied an appeal by a woman from fremont over a buddhist temple she built without a permit. the court declined to hear an appeal

of a circuit court judge ruling, and that means the woman must remove the buildings and the buddhist statues she built across her property. city officials ordered her to take them down back in 2021, saying they were a fire hazard and that she never had permission to build them. the woman claimed discrimination, but a judge ruled that she did not provide enough evidence to prove that argument. former reality tv star paris hilton showing support for a proposed bill aimed at protecting teenagers placed in restraints in treatment facilities. hilton joined lawmakers in sacramento to discuss legislation that would require the state to disclose data about when a child is put in restraints or solitary confinement at facilities for troubled youth that are licensed by the state. at the hearing, hilton described her experience in youth treatment programs. >> i was subjected to abuse disguised as therapy, isolated from the outside world, and denied even the most basic rights. i lived in constant fear, not knowing what would happen to me next if i tried to

on friday, the bureau of prisons is shutting down the facility, at least temporarily, because it no longer met prison standards. to date, eight correctional officers, including the warden, have been charged with sex crimes. seven of the defendants have been found guilty. ktvu spoke to several relatives of inmates who are concerned about these changes. >> she's, scared. she don't know what's going on. she. they came and told her the whole prison is going to shut down. she's petrified because she doesn't know where she's going. >> she's sick and she is supposed to be released immediately. >> a federal judge overseeing reforms held an emergency

hearing. the judge directing the court appointed person in charge of the prison to make sure inmates are properly transferred to other correctional facilities, halfway houses, home confinement or issued compassionate release. >> i think this is a good step in the right direction. clearly, the prison was not being properly run. it had poor management. >> an attorney representing a class action suit against the bureau of prisons questioned why the government did not alert inmates about the prison shutdown. >> now to san jose, where a former youth pastor was arrested for alleged sexual assault on a minor victim, told police the 47 year old, named brett bymaster, assaulted her several times between 2014 and 2018. san jose police say he was a youth pastor at the river church community at the time, and that he volunteered at after school programs outside the church by master was arrested last week in manteca, booked into santa clara county jail. san francisco police have increased the reward for information that leads to the arrest of whoever shot and killed a man last summer, police say they received a call from 22

year old rolando jakari bell on august third, saying he'd been shot on kellogg street in visitacion valley. he died later at a hospital. police are now offering a $125,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the gunman. no suspects have been identified, but police say this volkswagen that was recovered by investigators is connected to the homicide. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. >> a new report is criticizing the palo alto police department for its handling of excessive force allegations. an independent police auditor says the city should have issued a tougher discipline against an officer involved in a violent 2018 arrest, recorded on a surveillance camera. the city discussed firing that officer before deciding to suspend him. a sergeant retired before he was terminated while another officer was fired. the report is just now coming out after the administrative and legal issues were resolved. palo alto eventually settled with the person arrested in that case. for more than half $1 million. one person was sent to the hospital when a caltrain struck

their car last night in gilroy. it happened near the san martin station around 630. the car was on the tracks when it was hit by a southbound train. none of the 25 passengers on the train were hurt, but we still don't know the condition of the person who was actually in that car right now. >> a one day strike is underway by health care workers at marin health medical center. more than 100 medical technicians are set to join the picket lines in a demonstration that will continue until 6 p.m. strike organizers are demanding better pay and say marin health is offering pay raises of 2.5% a year to medical technicians. we're here to fight for a fair contract. >> the hospital has been very profitable, we support this community, we live in this community, and we want to be able to continue to live in this community, and get fair wages in order to do that. >> organizers say they've had marathon bargaining sessions with the hospital over the past few days, including one that lasted nearly 12 hours. the union says the strike is limited to one day to help limit the impact on patients. marin

health's chief executive officer responded to the strike, saying in part, we will continue active negotiations with the nyu on the remaining few issues, primarily pertaining to compensation, to see if we can reach an agreement, adding we will make the necessary arrangements to ensure that there will be no disruption to the quality or availability of care they are accustomed to receiving. well, now to the story of a baby who beat the odds after she was born at 23 weeks, weighing less than a pound. as ktvu krystal bailey reports, doctors gave the little girl just a 4% chance of survival. now, six months after her birth, she's finally at home . >> you smiling? yeah i see that smile. >> saori was born on october 16th, weighing just 12oz. her feet, the size of a quarter, her hands squeezing the tip of a pinky finger. >> it was definitely a shock to see how small she was. >> paris sweeney austin was five months pregnant when saori was born. >> saori means holy and sacred in japanese. >> at 23 weeks and two days

because of an infection, paris was induced to save both mom and baby. saori is the earliest and tiniest baby to arrive at sutter's alta bates in berkeley. her care team says it was challenging to give the micro-preemie nutrition because her veins were too small for an iv. her throat too small for a standard tube. >> even her diaper. the smallest diaper we have was too big for her. >> saori spent six months in the hospital. doctors say the odds were not in her favor, but now she's weighing nearly 10 pounds. >> sayuri is breathing on her own. she is very active and she's drinking all her food with her bottle, with her mom and it's just. that's what makes this so incredible. >> she's a miracle. she just really is. >> and as nurses packed her things and prepared paris for care at home, and that's the vitamin d, they're okay. >> she says prayer was her saving grace. it's been, pretty hard, but with some faith and

some hope, we got through it? >> the hospital sending paris and saori off in a tunnel of love as members of her care team cheered them on. >> i'm going to remind her probably every day how much of a fighter she is and just how strong she is. and now she's able to conquer anything that she puts her mind to. saori will continue with outpatient care services after leaving the hospital, and paris is most excited about saori going outside and experiencing fresh air for the first time since she was born six months ago in berkeley. >> krystal bailey ktvu, fox two news. >> well, police in redwood city are looking for a thief who stole several packages from a home, including one containing a wedding dress. officers say last thursday, a man went to a home near adams and madison. you see here in the surveillance video. this is about one block west of highway 82. and you see there snatching up packages the homeowner telling police one of

the packages included a wedding dress valued at $2,000. if you have any information about the person you see here in this video, the identity of this man or his whereabouts, call redwood city police. boeing is giving assurances that its 787 jets are working properly, after a whistleblower called out the company over safety issues. boeing said it has not found fatigue cracks in older 787 jets that have gone through heavy maintenance. last week, a former boeing, a former boeing quality engineer, claimed that the company dismissed safety concerns about the assembly of its 787 and 777 jets that fly internationally. that engineer is set to testify in a senate hearing on boeing's safety culture. the union representing pilots for american airlines is warning about a significant spike in safety problems at the airline, and a memo the allied pilots association said, quote, apa has been tracking a significant spike in safety and maintenance related problems in our operation. while united airlines is currently under public and government scrutiny,

it could just as easily be american airlines. end quote. now, the airline listed a series of issues, including problems where tools were left in wheel wells, a rise in collisions between aircraft being towed, and longer intervals between routine inspections. it urged pilots to remain vigilant and to take their time to ensure safety. >> the san francisco based law firm has filed a lawsuit to attempt to block the merger of hawaiian airlines and alaska airlines. the alioto law firm filed the lawsuit on behalf of eight airline passengers. lawsuit alleges alaska airlines proposed $1.9 billion acquisition of hawaiian airlines would lead to higher prices, job layoffs and fewer flights. the proposed merger is currently being investigated by the us department of justice. some verizon customers will soon receive a portion of a $100 million settlement. it affects customers who had accounts from january of 2016 through early november of 2023. lawsuit claims verizon falsely advertised services at lower monthly rates than what it actually charged customers. the suit also says verizon did not disclose administrative fees. settlement

amounts are up to $100, and they'll vary based on how many months the user was subject to the charges. >> the san francisco fire department, the chp and fema's urban search and rescue preparing for the next big disaster. the departments are holding a search and rescue demonstration at the fire department's treasure island training facility. they used a helicopter to lower a fire department canine unit onto a large pile of rubble. the drill was to simulate rescuing victims from a collapsed structure after a large earthquake. >> this sort of partnership allows us to bring all these components together and be able to deliver this resource at the search canine, which can locate where people are trapped. it can also determine areas where there's no one trapped. and so we can most effectively utilize the limited rescue resources that we have to do the most good for the most people. >> the fire department says the disaster search canines are the best way to locate people who are trapped in collapsed structures. they can take up to two years to train and develop the food and beverage provider for the oakland a's has warned

workers not to speak publicly about company business. >> in a letter obtained by the san francisco chronicle, aramark told workers not to speak to the government, media or the press about aramark's business matters on the company's behalf. went on to say if anyone breaks the policy, they could be fired. aramark tells ktvu its employees are allowed to speak publicly on their own behalf. the letter comes shortly after the a's announced the team will lay off workers after this season, ahead of a move to sacramento. the oakland a's fans are angry at owner john fisher are vowing to hound him wherever the team goes. fan groups are following the a's up interstate 80 when the team moves to sacramento next season, there's already a protest planned at sacramento sutter health park a week from saturday. fans say they'll keep up with their calling the summer of cell campaign to try to force fisher to sell the a's. they're also hoping the team's ultimate plans to end up in las vegas fall through. >> the warriors will be shorthanded when they face the sacramento kings tonight in that play-in tournament. gary payton, the second has been ruled out because of a calf injury. he will also miss the next game if

actually hearing the music he'd composed be played by a string quartet across the country. in new york, for the very first time, 11 men took part in the ten week program. organizers say it's so important for them to learn to read and write music, and how it's been life changing for the inmates. >> you can see in their faces that it gave them hope. it gave them something to look for. it gives them something to look forward to, that they hear what they wrote and it's their stories. it was so impactful. >> sonoma county jail officials say they hope to offer the program to female inmates next year. an effort to revive an extinct species of butterfly as new life in san francisco. the xerces blue butterfly became extinct in the 1940s, was reportedly the first butterfly species to ever disappear due to the human development. scientists have been comparing the genetic code of that extinct butterfly to the structures of other common blue butterflies. after three years of work, researchers at the cal academy of sciences identified a group of silvery blues that could successfully fill the ecological

quiet. and we do have that nice trend that is going to continue for several days. ridge will strengthen over the next 24 hours or so, and it does break down. i'll show you what i mean here, but not enough to let any amount of rain drop in from the north. here's a look at tomorrow morning. there's the ridge right over the state. you can see. but notice by thursday it pushes east a little bit. it flattens out a little bit. and we introduce what we call more of a zonal flow. and that's going to allow our temperatures to drop off just a little bit. still be right about average maybe even a bit above. just not quite as warm as tomorrow. tomorrow may be the warmest day for many outside our doors at this time. a beautiful 70 degrees reported in concord in the north bay, 67 in santa rosa, and upper 50s over areas of half moon bay. so a little bit of a localized sea breeze there, keeping temperatures in check at half moon bay. but for the afternoon notice, we are well above average by three even six degrees or so. 74 for santa rosa

cities. back to you, rosemary. >> thank you. a new exhibit is open at san jose state university's king library. the exhibit is called south asians in silicon valley. it highlights the history and cultural contributions asians from communities like afghanistan, bangladesh, india and sri lanka, and how they've helped shape the landscape of technology and entrepreneurship in the region. ktvu spoke with montre roy, the curator of this exhibit. >> at least 20% of santa clara county is south asian, right, and san jose state university's international students, like about 60% of them, come from south asia. and we know san jose state is a very serious feeder to silicon valley's tech world. so, you know, there itself that itself is a proof of how much, you know, south asians bring to the community here to the tech sector. >> this exhibit is the first in a series. the exhibit will also highlight south asian music and feature south asian san jose student university's students
