disappeared on april 24th after he reportedly ran away from an east bay hospital. hello again everyone. >> i'm julie julie haener and i'm mike mibach. chow's family says he has schizophrenia and that some tips about his whereabouts have filtered in, but just not the one they're looking for. new tonight ktvu is alice worth spoke with chow's family and has our report. >> daniel chow and his cousin kyle ma are worried about daniel's brother, who's been missing since april 23rd. 25 year old dennis chow suffers from schizophrenia. he first went missing april 13th, but his family found him day after we drove him to the e.r. here in hayward, where he was able to get seen for all of those blisters he had on his feet. >> but to also get a psychiatric evaluation from the doctor, where he then got transported to john george to begin receiving care under a 5150 that was eventually extended to a 5250. >> during his two week hold, he was transported from john george psychiatric hospital to san

leandro hospital. it's now under alameda health system. he was taken there for an ultrasound. >> my mom and i went to san leandro hospital to talk to security, and all that they said was, you know, he ran off. we tried to run after him a bit, but we couldn't catch him, and that's all they told me. >> chow is a graduate of tennyson high school in hayward. he went on to brown university. >> yes. he's a graduate of brown university. he is a gates millennium scholar, so he has a full ride scholarship to college and to any other education that he would want to pursue. >> according to ma, every time they've received a tip about a sighting, they just miss him. >> and they told us on april 28th he was, can like he was at westfield valley fair mall. he was trying to shoplift and they weren't going to press any charges. so they just let him go and they removed the missing persons report without even telling us. >> the family has been doing their own searching. dennis chow was last seen in king city in monterey county. it's likely the family will head there to look for him.

>> i think that we just need law enforcement to be more aware of the situations like this. i mean, i'm just driving around san leandro in the bay area. there's so many homeless people with mental health issues, and i think that the system could do a lot better than this in san leandro, alice wirtz, ktvu, fox two news, the chp has issued an endangered missing advisory for a missing eight year old boy from mountain view tonight. >> authorities say adan ortiz was last seen around 6:00 in mountain view. they believe adan is on foot and wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue pajama pants. if you see him or have any information about where the boy could be, you're asked to call 911 >> new. at 11 tonight, a sideshow l to multiple arrests inan jose last night. police say ey responded to the area of capital expressway and story road as officers were dispersing the lae crowd, they searched one of the cars taking part in th sideshow. they say they fod two semi-automatic handguns and extended magazines. police also say they recovered a

ghost gun and an unregistered gun. >> also in san jose, firefighters were able to knock down a fire at a buddhist temple tonight and started just before 6:00 on foss avenue, just off of 680. firefighters say the buddhist temple and its residential dwellings were affected. it took firefighters about two hours to get this one under control. four people have been displaced, no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is not yet known. >> oakland's newest police chief is officially on the job. chief floyd mitchell brings with him more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement, and was most recently the chief of police in lubbock, texas. for weeks, he has been meeting with opd leaders to learn about the department and its programs. we spoke with city and community leaders about the new chief. they tell us they are optimistic, but also say there is a lot of work that needs to be done. >> we're looking forward to meeting with him and with many of the merchants and a lot of the a lot of the small businesses and folks that live and work in fruitvale to, to, you know, to support him and

hopefully he'll be able to be creative and energetic to because we need that right now. >> public safety is the number one priority. it is not about talking and feeling sorry for people. it's about taking action . >> chief mitchell succeeds leronne armstrong, who was fired more than a year ago. >> new at 11, the american cancer society is launching what could be the largest study ever on cancer risk among black women. researchers right now are seeking 100,000 black women between the ages of 25 and 55 who have never been diagnosed with cancer to participate, data shows. black women have the highest death rate and the shortest survival rate of any racial or ethnic group in the us. for most cancers, they say, they hope to understand the factors that influence those outcomes. >> as a coalition of bay area public health experts will gather in front of the san francisco office of the chief medical examiner tomorrow. they plan to commemorate the 3026 lives lost to overdoses since

january of 2020. health care professionals and concerned community members say they want to raise awareness about the alarming increase in the number of overdose related deaths in the city. they say they want to push for other public health strategies to combat the drug crisis. >> san jose state has become the latest university to join the nationwide encampment. protests against the war in gaza. the university says this encampment is against school policy, and they've already warned students to pack up and leave ktvu lamonica peters has the story at san jose state university monday. >> pro-palestinian protesters set up an encampment with a list of demands for the university be free palestine free palestine protesters would not speak with ktvu on camera, but justice studies professor sam kill, who says she's a faculty advisor for the protesters, talked about students decision to stage a sit in the administration, though they send lots of emails about

their concerns over wars or natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes have yet to send one email out about the genocide that is happening against the palestinians. >> and we're in our seventh month now. >> protesters say they want the university to be more transparent about its financial investments and to fully divest san jose state university released a statement saying in part, while an initial review of investments by the tower foundation board indicates no direct holdings of companies identified in the april 29th associated student resolution, we are conducting further research to confirm and we are committed to communicating an update when this research concludes, the schools divest. >> we will not stop. we will not rest. >> they're also calling for professor jonathan roth to be fired after he was involved in an altercation with a pro-palestinian protester at a campus event earlier this year. >> so my understanding was that he was put on paid leave, for

me, which is a paid vacation, and that an investigation was opened up into his behavior. >> there are still protesters here at san jose state university, although they were asked to leave just before 9 p.m. on monday night. the university says it respects self-expression and freedom of speech. however, their main priority is to make sure that the campus is safe for learning. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news in the north bay pro-palestine demonstrators rallied outside a fundraising event for north bay congressman jared huffman. >> free, free, free palestine. dozens of protesters carried flags and banners, while the congressman held the private event at lagunitas in petaluma. they say he's funding the war in gaza after he voted in favor of a measure that set aside $26 billion to support israel last month. the congressman has called for a cease fire, but protesters say they want to see a stronger response.

>> why are you trying to put a band aid over a gunshot wound? the money going towards israel to injure palestinians needs to stop. >> i don't want my tax money to go to be funding this war and the occupation. >> an petaluma police had orders to maintain the peace while giving protesters space to demonstrate. we asked members of huffman's staff if he wanted to talk to us, but they declined. >> new at 11, the antioch unified school district employees suspended for bullying was recently seen on surveillance cameras removing files from his office staff say ken turnage is the district's director of maintenance operations and facilities, and oversees the district's bond dollars. employees have accused him of verbal abuse and threats. now, district officials say he was under supervision the entire time he was in his office and collecting his belongings, but they did not confirm if anyone reviewed the documents before he left. >> san francisco democrats want to declare that racism and hate are a public health crisis. members of the county central

committee announced the resolution today. they plan to put it before the full committee next week. they say the city is facing an epidemic of hate. they hope public health funds can be used to help survivors get the support they need to battle anxiety and depression and ptsd, according to fbi hate crime data, anti-asian hate crime spiked 125% in 2021. anti black crimes were up 60% in 2020. >> and tonight's west coast rap. a utah police sergeant killed in the line of duty. what we are learning about what led up to the killing. >> then a hearing on artificial intelligence, disinformation in san francisco today. how city officials want to ensure oversight ahead of the november election, and a big upgrade for angel island. >> the overhaul the islands dock will soon get thanks to a federal

this story begins tonight's west coast rap today. santaquin police sergeant william hooser was buried last week. the sergeant pulled over a big rig for a traffic stop. soon after, a woman being held against her will escaped the cab of that truck. and as the sergeant was helping her, that's when investigators say the driver of the big rig, michael jane, intentionally hit and killed the sergeant. jane was captured. hours later, he is facing charges of aggravated murder, targeting a law enforcement officer and kidnaping. >> and in the state of

washington, more than 150 vehicles and about 500 people gathered for a sideshow in a seattle neighborhood. this was the scene over the weekend as the sideshow blocked traffic for hours. a resident nearby says a police vehicle actually arrived on scene, and that's when one of the cars in the sideshow began to circle the officer's vehicle. seattle police say they are working to identify the people involved. as of tonight, no arrests have been made in arizona. >> a woman who admitted to poisoning her husband by pouring bleach into his coffee will avoid going to prison. melody feliciano johnson pleaded guilty last month to two counts of poisoning food or drink. johnson was sentenced to three years probation for the crime. that includes mandatory mental health treatment. she was initially arrested and charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault. the judge noted even that the victim, her estranged husband robby johnson, had told the

has been reunited with his family. >> new at 11, a federal grant will help rebuild the public boat dock on angel island. the $1.5 million grant will go toward rebuilding the dock that was badly damaged during the winter storms. the state park says construction will take about two years to complete. the 34 new boat slips will be ada accessible and include new lighting. the work will not affect the angel island ferry, which does have its own landing. >> ridership on the san francisco bay ferry just hit a new post-pandemic high. ferry officials say more than 2300 people a day use the ferry. last week. during the morning commute, that number boosted by a big jump of riders using the oakland route. >> when i worked the morning show at super bowl week, i took the ferry all five days because we were doing live shows in the city. it was the only time i've ever taken the ferry for work purposes. it was great. it's awesome. >> yeah, i would love to take the ferry every day. the people

that do swear by it, i haven't taken it. yeah i know, okay, well, so as we go into this week, we're looking at temperatures that are going to fluctuate a little bit each day nights and mornings. and those temperatures will work their way up into the low 80s again tomorrow. today they cooled off a few degrees. here's some of the numbers. you can see this instead of 80. we had 77 in fairfield, 79 in antioch, 77 in livermore. tomorrow those numbers will turn into low 80s. so you can see the fog out there. it's hard to tell the depth of the marine layer from this because it's funneling through the gap there, but it's a big marine layer, and it's going to be probably the it is the dominant weather feature in our week or five day forecast. it's just going to be there. it's going to be nights and mornings. well let's take a look. here's tomorrow morning. so look at the fog footprint. so it's well over 1500ft maybe 1800 feet. and it's going deep. and so it gets up over the coastal hills, up over the headlands. and then it burns back burns back pretty, pretty rapidly. so it'll be a little warmer. and then we do it again 7 a.m. wednesday morning. and then it burns back a little bit. comes

back in wednesday evening and then thursday morning would be the most fog intrusion that we see. which would you'd anticipate a cooler day for sure. certainly along the coast. so nights and mornings. and that pattern continues right into the bay area weekend. so yes, you know, it's not, it's not the end of the world. it's just pretty much pretty flat line. so with this forecast, we're looking at right now, temperatures that are in the 50s tomorrow night there'll be about the same. and you can almost see the marine layer. those dark greens and those blues where the marine layer being the cooler moister air and you kind of see it right. and you can see where it's not getting right. it's not getting that sea breeze isn't getting it that far inland. so that fog footprint i showed you on the fog model is kind of matches this, right? the blues and the dark greens. and then we're about even for where we were last night this time in terms of temperatures about the same. so these are the forecast highs tomorrow sunny away from the coast that will be the story all week. and just a really pleasant pleasant week forecast with spring weather in store. treev pollens are not so high.

they're up, but not as high as they were. but the grasses and the weeds are coming on. so inland areas, you'll notice the pollens again tomorrow and you hit the coast. you'll need jackets. we'll see you back here tomorrow night. >> all right. bill thank you. a new plan to target fare evaders on san francisco's muni. the sfmta says it will hire dozens of new fare inspectors to monitor riders. and as ktvu christian captain reports tonight, officials have a plan in place to keep this new task force safe. >> muni carries more than 440,000 weekday riders through the streets of san francisco. while the majority of passengers pay their way, muni estimates that as many as 1 in 5 riders doesn't pay. passengers say that doesn't surprise them. >> yeah. you know, in san francisco, everybody's trying to get their way out of their on the bus. you go any other city, you got to pay sfmta says before the pandemic, about 12% of passengers didn't pay. >> now, the agency says about

20% of riders skip out on paying . the sfmta says it is in the process of bringing two dozen new fare inspectors online who will hit the road july 1st, riding transit and making sure everyone has proof of payment. >> what we've seen in the data is a very, very strong correlation between the presence of fare inspectors and people paying their correct fare, the sfmta says. >> fares account for about a quarter of its income. >> we can't sustain muni service without people paying their fair fare, it is about a quarter of our operators salary. if we're not able to bring fare compliance up a bit, we will have no choice but to reduce muni service to keep the new fare inspectors safe. >> they work in groups of three and can use radios to call for help if they see a potentially dangerous person or activity. >> the fare inspectors are a huge part of our safety program. they're very presence on the vehicle helps to make sure that everything stays chill.

>> the sfmta says seeing people not pay can make other riders think they don't have to pay either. but the agency says a lot of those riding who don't appear to be paying have in fact paid for their rides. if they have the muni app, for example, they don't need to tag in like clipper card users. and remember , there are a lot of those who ride for free like the kids. the elderly, and the disabled. in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> a jeweler that is called san francisco home for more than 170 years, is leaving the city today. shreve and company announced it's moving its flagship flagship flagship store from post street in union square to palo alto. the company has been rooted in the city since its founding in 1852. shreve and co says the move is part of a strategic retooling of the company's business plan. the san francisco location is hosting a public liquidation sale starting may 17th, and here is a look at the stories trending tonight on ktvu. >> com one of our top stories a

reforesting alamo square bts studio has won a merit award from the american society of landscape architects, northern california chapter. the collaboration of the alamo square neighborhood association and the san francisco rec and park department brought together a plan of diversifying the landscape and creating a plan of resiliency over time. since 2016, more than 270 trees have been planted there. >> new tonight the oakland zoo's newest resident now has a new name meet nuru, which means the light in swahili. last week, oakland zoo welcomed a 13 month old baby giraffe from the audubon nature institute in louisiana as part of a species survival plan. but he didn't have a name, so the zoo decided to ask for some help on social media. the zoo says nuru is very adventurous and quickly adjusting to his new home, and heard the town of yountville is
