can expect for the days ahead, including your bay area weekend coming up in just a little bit. 701 let's see how the highways are doing this morning with sal. good morning. >> good morning rosemary. we do have the typical slowing getting into san francisco. that's to say that the bay bridge is backed up as you drive from the maze. we had an earlier problem that was been cleared. also, interstate 880 traffic looks okay, nothing unusual. and the san mateo and dumbarton bridge are all typical. you need to know that things aren't unusual on the peninsula as well. on 101 and 280, heading up and down 701. let's go back to the headlines, sal. >> thank you. new this morning federal highway safety regulators are opening another investigation into a self-driving car company. this time mountain view based waymo. the investigation involves 22 incidents of crashes and traffic violations reported by waymo. no one was hurt in any of the incidents since last month. federal regulators have opened at least four investigations into cars that have some type of self-driving capabilities cruise has announced it'll start

testing its self-driving taxis in arizona this week. for now, the rides will have safety drivers on board this is seen as a major step for cruise in resuming driverless rides. the company suspended operations last fall after an incident involving one of its cars in san francisco. the state revoked cruise's license to operate its self-driving vehicles in california after cruise allegedly covered up information about the crash. >> our time now. 703a deadline is looming for protesting students at the university of san francisco, who are part of a pro-palestinian encampment on the campus, university city officials want the protesters to leave the campus by this afternoon, or there will be punishment. ktvu james torres is out there at the campus with the latest. good morning, james dave. >> good morning. well, the encampment behind me looks a lot like it does at several other campuses all across the country. here you see the tents that are all pitched up here, all on the welch field of the university of san francisco campus. students here say they actually did meet

with the university president, paul fitzgerald, for about three hours. they talked about what it would take to break the encampment down. but they say they never actually reached many agreements. now, students are most of them, at least not actually in these tents at the moment. they'll be here at about 830. that's because many of them are in the finals week. graduate week as well. university officials say those students need to be out of here by 3:00. this afternoon. the school says the camp is violating school code and if those protesters stay, then the university says that they will lose their opportunity for full amnesty. >> so they did say that they're not going to have police raid us unless we're violent or we're harassing somebody. but i want to emphasize we've been peaceful since april 29th, and we're going to remain peaceful. >> yeah, april 29th. that's when the first day of the encampment. that's when it all began. students say they've gotten a great deal of support since

then, including a number of students who identify as jewish, who have joined their cause. now, those in the encampment say they don't plan to leave until their demands are met. one demand discussed asking the university president to publicly say palestine is experiencing a genocide, which those students say president fitzgerald did not agree to. they are planning to rally here at 3 p.m. again. the same time in which the university has designated a deadline for these students to clear out. we're live this morning in san francisco. i'm james torres, ktvu fox two news. >> james, thank you. organizers say they're planning a mass protest outside google's i o conference in mountain view today. this comes just weeks after google fired dozens of workers who held sit in protests at its offices in sunnyvale, seattle and new york. organizers say hundreds of people are expected to try to shut down the conference at the shoreline amphitheater. protesters say google's project nimbus could aid the israeli military's offensive in gaza.

>> well, donald trump's former attorney, michael cohen. well, let me tell you about secretary of state antony blinken. he's on an unannounced visit to ukraine. in fact, he arrived in kyiv earlier today, reassured ukraine it does have american support in its fight against russia. antony blinken's visit comes after congress passed a new aid package that contains $60 billion in aid for ukraine. now he'll be meeting with ukrainian leaders and getting updates on the war during his two day trip. and blinken's visit comes as russia has launched a new offensive on ukrainian border cities. the russian forces captured at least seven villages along the border in recent days. that is causing massive evacuations as thousands of ukrainians grab what they can and get out of there. >> some special attention is paid to the kharkiv region defensive battles are ongoing, fierce battles on a large part of our border area, there are

villages that have actually turned from a gray zone into a combat zone. >> now us defense department officials say they're trying to speed up the delivery of u.s. aid, which was held up for months in congress for people in san jose have been displaced because of a fire at a buddhist temple. >> it happened last night around 6:00 on foss avenue near 680. it took about two hours for firefighters to get the flames under control. the fire affected both the temple and a house right behind it. for people living there have been displaced. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> our time now 706 with new this morning, the bay area's newest pro sports team just announced its new name. >> so when i hear the golden state valkyries, i think of power. i think of community. i think of achieving the impossible together and showing the world what is possible. >> that was jess smith. she's the president of the bay area's new wnba team, which we now know will be the golden state

valkyries, the valkyries originated from norse mythology. it was a group of warrior women who were strong. they were bold and fierce. the logo of the team includes the bay bridge showing the tie between oakland and san francisco. the valkyries will start playing in the wnba next season. >> time 707. we do have some of the traditional backups out there that you might expect. for example, the westbound richmond bridge. we have some slow traffic there. no major issues here as you drive over to marin, but there's a backup waiting for you. and again, these things aren't going to surprise you if you drive every day. bay bridge improving a little bit. remember last hour? we had slower traffic because of an earlier incident that's been cleared up. and 880 if you want to get into downtown oakland right now, could be the time to do it before it gets really busy. these commutes are looking rather typical. and this morning, 708 let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you. well,

donald trump's former lawyer, michael cohen, is once again testifying this morning at trump's criminal trial in new york. the former president arrived at court. he had a group of supporters with him. this time, ktvu andre senior in the studio. now to tell us more about what to expect in the courtroom. andre. dave. >> donald trump arrived at the courthouse with a group of supporters, including house speaker mike johnson, north dakota governor doug burgum and former republican presidential candidate vivek ramaswamy. trump said they are there to speak for him since he isn't allowed to speak because of the judge's gag order. >> i do have a lot of surrogates and they are speaking very beautifully and they come from all over washington and they're highly respected and they think this is the greatest scam they've ever seen. and some are democrats. the very embarrassed by what's going on. i just want to trump that went on to read comments from other supporters quoting their remarks. >> right now, michael cohen is still being questioned by prosecutors. trump's defense attorneys could begin

cross-examination of cohen today . that follows cohen's testimony yesterday when he said trump was involved in a conspiracy to suppress stories of alleged sexual affairs in order to avoid harm to his 2016 presidential candidacy. cohen testified, quote, what i was doing was at the direction of and benefit of mr. trump. everything required mr. trump's sign off, end quote. cohen's testimony backed up by claims by prosecutors that trump knew all the details about a payment made to former adult movie actress stormy daniels. >> in this case, you've got extraordinary written documentation, you've got all of those ledger entries, you've got the checks signed by mr. trump, you've got evidence from other disinterested witnesses that the checks were written in new york and were fedex down to washington and then sent back. >> trump has denied having an affair with daniels and denies the charges that he falsified business records to cover up payments. one defense attorneys get a chance to question cohen.

a desperate search for a loved one who's been missing. now for several weeks. they say 25 year old dennis chow of hayward has serious mental health problems. he hasn't been seen since april 23rd. he has no money or a cell phone. he wandered away before from his home, but they found him at one point but say he ran away from a hospital. >> we found him at dublin bart station and when we found him, his feet were heavily blistered. and the day after we drove him to the er here in hayward, where he was able to get seen for all of those blisters he had on his feet. but to also get a psychiatric evaluation from the doctor and the family says they're really frustrated he was allowed to escape from that

hospital and they're frustrated with law enforcement. >> they think child could now be in monterey county. more family members are flying in from vietnam to help with the search. >> a jury in alameda county has convicted a man of second degree murder for killing his girlfriend in. investigators say joseph roberts killed 27 year old elizabeth buckner in their pleasanton apartment last summer. her body later washed up along the alameda shoreline. elizabeth buckner was a law school student two months away from earning her degree. her mother spoke outside the courthouse yesterday, shortly after the jury announced its decision on what today's verdict means for me is that i don't have to look over my shoulder for right now. >> i've lived in trauma, in terror. >> roberts will be back in court june 14th for sentencing. he could face 15 years to life in prison. >> our time now 715. oakland's new police chief is officially on the job. police chief floyd mitchell finished his first day

on the job after spending weeks meeting with oakland police leaders to learn about the department and its programs. city leaders say they're optimistic about the new police chief, but say a lot of work has to be done. >> we're looking forward to meeting with him and with many of the merchants and a lot of the a lot of the small businesses and folks that live and work in fruitvale to, to, you know, to support him and hopefully he'll be able to be creative and energetic to because we need that right now. >> public safety is the number one priority is not about talking and feeling sorry for people. it's about taking action . >> and now police chief mitchell succeeds leronne armstrong, who was fired more than a year ago. new knee, san francisco's mass transit agency, has new plans to crack down on fare evaders. muni is hiring three dozen new fare inspectors. they'll start work across the city beginning july 1st. their main goal to make

sure everybody who takes mass transit in san francisco pays for their ride. muni estimates 20% of its riders regularly skip paying the fare. >> we can't sustain muni service without people paying their fair fare, it is about a quarter of our operators salary. if, if we're not able to bring fare compliance up a bit, we will have no choice but to reduce muni service. >> and muni also announced a plan to make sure the fare inspectors stay safe. they'll be working in groups of three. they'll have radios with them. so they can immediately contact the police if they see a dangerous situation. >> analysts say. already, high gas prices here in california are only expected to rise as we get into the summer months. the average price across the bay area right now is $5.45 a gallon, $0.59 higher than where we were this time last year. now, california vehicles have overall better gas mileage than

those in other states, but many drivers say they are frustrated with what they're paying at the pump. >> people that are running the state right now and the regulations associated with the gas prices, and i just i don't like it. >> now, the statewide average price for gas is $5.27 a gallon. the national average. this would be a dream, right? $3.62. now, the state excise tax per gallon is $0.57 here in california right now. that will go up to almost $0.60 a gallon starting july 1st. triple a is predicting close to 44 million people will be traveling for memorial day weekend. it's a 4% increase since last year and closely is very close to matching 2005 record numbers for travel. it's estimated some 38 million americans will travel by car. airports are expected to see 3.5 million travelers that weekend. experts say that drivers leaving thursday or friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. travelers returning sunday or monday should avoid the afternoon and

early evening hours because that is when everyone is rushing home. you don't want to get stuck on the road. i've done that before. not doing that again. >> oh, look at those pictures. let's see what sal is seeing on the roads right now. everybody behaving out there. >> yeah, it's a very typical commute there dave. and gasia good morning to you both. right now highway four is where we're going to start. and i'll tell you that it's a little better than it was an hour ago. it was backed up all the way into antioch. but now it's backed up through bay point and part of pittsburg, getting over to concord. nothing unusual there at the bay bridge. it's better than it was, although it is crowded. we had an early morning accident in san francisco that's been gone for a while, and we do see that traffic on interstate 880 is looking good. so this commute is mostly the routine slowdowns. peninsula looks good, though not too bad on 101 or 280 in and out of san francisco right now. 719 let's bring rosemary in with today's weather. >> oh thank you sal. good morning to all of you. starting out with some low cloud and overcast sky across much of the

bay area this morning, but not the case in lake tahoe. get a view of this one. beautiful blue skies are the lake. looks so calm. some snow still on the mountains, temperatures sinking into the upper 30s here this morning and into the afternoon. 70 degrees with the slight possibility of afternoon thunderstorms on the crest there. storm tracker two here showing us here at home. low clouds are banked up against the coastline as well as our bayside communities. we have this system here that was parked a little bit closer to the bay area yesterday. it has shifted towards southern california. ridge of high pressure over the pacific will be nudging in our direction in the coming days, and that's going to bring our temperatures up. but it's not going to be a dramatic jump, just a few degrees expected for today into the next 24 hours. you'll notice how the ridge again begins to shift a little bit closer to us. and then we kind of remain status quo for the coming days. we're not going to lose the sea breeze. the

clark's popularity is driving up ticket sales. tonight's game is the first sellout for connecticut since its inaugural season in 2003. the average online ticket price around $300. the most expensive courtside seats going for several thousand each. quarterback jared goff just signed a contract extension with the detroit lions, giving him the second highest annual salary in the nfl. the new deal is said to be worth $212 million for four years. goff's extension comes after a productive year that saw him finish among the league leaders in key quarterback stats. the former cal golden bear and marin catholic graduate also led the lions to the nfc championship game before losing to the niners. >> our time now 725, the american cancer society launching what could be the biggest study ever on cancer risk for black women. researchers want 100,000 black women between 25 and 55 years old who've never been diagnosed with cancer, to take part. the data shows black women have the highest death rate and the

with sal. good morning. >> good morning rosemary. you know, it does look like a typical commute. and highway four is slow this morning, but nothing unusual. there it is. that's the drive from bay point over to concord, and you will see the traditional slowdown. bay bridge is a little better than it was after some earlier issues. 880 still hasn't become really busy and the san mateo bridge looks good. we've also been looking at the peninsula that looks good and so does five 8680, though is slow through pleasanton on the way down the sunol grade 730. let's go back to the headlines. >> new this morning. the fbi has issued a warning involving this summer's pride celebrations in the united states. federal agents say foreign terrorist groups may attempt to target pride parades and other events, says the lgbtq plus community in this country. the warning issued does not specifically mention any bay area pride events, but the fbi says it's especially concerned isis may be planning an attack on us soil next month. we'll mark eight years since the

mass shooting at a gay nightclub in orlando, florida, that led to 49 deaths. isis praised that attack. 731 happening today a group of tech workers planning a protest and rally outside google's conference in mountain view today. they say they want to draw attention to the tech giant's business contracts with the israeli military. k.t.s. ali rasmus live in mountain view here to show us, ali, what's happening on campus right now. >> well, google's flagship developers conference starts today. >> it is a scheduled to start around 10:00 this morning, but already we've seen some of the preparations for it here. behind us, you can see where people have been getting dropped off and walking to that bag check area. security is pretty tight around here. and then those folks are heading over to the registration tent. this is all happening on the campus and the company's mountain view campus. thousands are expected to attend the conference in person and online from around the world, and the focus of the google i o conference is artificial

intelligence this year. but an organization that calls itself no tech for genocide plans to stage a protest here to call attention to google's business contracts with the israeli government. the group is particularly focused on a program called project nimbus, which the organization says is being used to target innocent civilians in the war in gaza. since 2021, google and amazon have provided cloud computing services, artificial intelligence and other tech services to the israeli government through project nimbus. last month, nine google workers staged a sit in protest at the office of one of the executives overseeing that program. that sit in protest lasted for several hours. the workers were eventually arrested. another 40 or so. google workers and contractors were also fired for participating in that sit in protest last month, including one of the organizers of today's protest action. now, the group plans to meet nearby the google campus around 830 this morning before organizing a rally and other types of protest demonstrations near the google

campus. again, it's set to coincide with the thousands of people scheduled to be here for the google flagship developers conference. that conference starts at 10:00 this morning. in the next couple of hours, we will be watching to see exactly where and how that protest action plays out here. live in mountain view. ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news okay, ali, thank you. >> time 733 the university of san francisco warning pro-palestinian protesters who have encampments on the campus. they have to leave by 3 p.m. today or face discipline action. the protesters want the university to divest from israel. they condemn the violence against palestinians in gaza. the leaders of ucsf say they respect the right of free speech, but public safety on campus is their main priority. some students say they will not leave the camp until their demands are met. >> we've been here since april 29th, and again, we're not going to leave until we get those

demands met. we've made that really clear after meeting yesterday with some of the members of the encampment, university officials say they'll call for a cease fire in gaza and also form a socially responsible investment task force and will give organizers of the encampment a dedicated seat. >> meantime, a pro-palestinian group claims police took down their encampment at ucsf. the group sets up tents at the medical complex on parnassus avenue. instagram videos show campus police officers taking down those tents and arresting one of the demonstrators. the group accused the medical school of forcing them to remove pro-palestine banners off buildings. we tried to contact the university to get a comment on this, but so far have not heard back from them. >> san jose state has become the latest university where pro-palestinian protesters have set up an encampment against the war in gaza. a professor who is

a faculty advisor for the protesters says they want the university to be more transparent about its financial investments and fully divest from any investment connected to israel. >> the administration, though they send lots of emails about their concerns over wars or natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes, have yet to send one email out about the genocide that is happening against the palestinians. and we're in our seventh month now. >> the university says while it respects freedom of speech, its main priority is keeping the campus safe for learning. it also said the encampment violates school policy. >> our time now. 735. a judge in sonoma county reduced the charges against two women accused of trespassing and vandalism at a poultry farm in petaluma. about 50 people with a group called direct action everywhere are targeted. petaluma poultry on lakeville highway last june, about 230 in the morning, investigators say four protesters went into the property by cutting through a

chain link fence and took 5 or 6 of the chickens. the two women are due to go back to court on may 23rd, to be arraigned on the new reduced charges. meantime, in menlo park, a herd of very hungry goats was brought in to eat as much vegetation as they want to reduce the fire hazards. as we head into summertime, all this week, the goats will be at sharon hills park eating up dry weeds and grass. the goats come from a company called ecosystem concepts incorporated. now, the city has used goats for more than ten years to help reduce the fuels out there. goats are a nontoxic, environmentally friendly way to reduce fire risk in very dry areas. >> tesla has started rehiring some members of its supercharger team, two weeks after ceo elon musk gutted it. chief among the people who've returned is the team's north american director. it's unclear how many people so

far have been rehired out of the nearly 500 who were laid off last week, musk pledged to spend more than $500 million on growing tesla's supercharger network this year. >> all right, gasia time is 737, right back to sal castaneda. what's happening in our commute now? >> yeah, we're getting a little more crowded in the south bay there. dave and garcia, northbound 280. let's begin there. northbound 280. traffic is going to be slow, and this is nothing really unusual. it's just one of those things that happens in the south bay. i do want to mention that highway 101 is also a little bit slow, and you can look at the grid. things are slow. not a lot of crashes to report in the south bay. we're also looking here at the east bay commute and you will see the traffic is moving along. okay. westbound 580 at the altamont pass. we've had some slow traffic there. and i also want to show you, of course, the bay bridge that is typically slow backed up to the maze at 738. let's talk about today's weather. here's rosemary. >> okay, sal may gray out there

at this hour. we do have a lot of overcast sky from the coast around the bay. our inland cities seeing partly cloudy skies, got some sunshine far inland. east bay this morning. a beautiful look there, jack. london square. we will have the clouds part. mostly sunny, away from the coastline, expected by about lunchtime. 51 degrees in san francisco right now. 50 in napa for the inner east bay, 53 in livermore, areas like santa rosa, novato. you're still in the upper 40s. so a bit of a chill for some this morning, especially if you have a little bit of breeze out there. the winds are generally light, but fairfield reporting 18mph. so that delta breeze there, although it's weak it is moving through the carquinez strait and the delta at this time. the visibility not too bad. we do have a little bit of fog, but you can see not so far that it's low lying and impacting your morning commute. the futurecast model will show you by about lunchtime or so. it's moving back and we will have partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies for

westbound 580 as people take a look, getting word of a new crash northbound 101 on the peninsula at hillsdale. it's 802. let's get back to the headlines. >> now. let's talk about self driving cars now. new this morning. federal highway safety regulators opening another investigation into a self-driving car company. this time mountain view based waymo. the inquiry involves 22 incidents of crashes and traffic violations reported by waymo. no one was hurt in any of these incidents. since last month, federal regulators have opened at least four investigations into cars that have some type of self-driving capabilities. meantime, cruise announced it will start testing its self-driving taxis in arizona this week. for now, those rides will have safety drivers on board. this is seen as a major step for cruise to resume those driverless rides. the company suspended operations last fall after an incident involving one of its cars in san francisco. the state revoked cruise license to operate its self-driving cars in the california area after cruise allegedly covered up information about that crash.

>> a deadline looms for students taking part in pro-palestine encampments at the university of san francisco. the school says they have to be out by this afternoon, or they should prepare for the consequences. ktvu james torres live at the usf campus. with the ongoing conversations here, james, between protesters and the university, we. >> gasia this encampment here has been here since the end of april. you can see behind me. it doesn't look much different than any other campus. you see, the tents that have been pitched here, signs letting you know exactly what the cause is all about. a number of people you see here in those green vests. so those are community members, not students here, all serving basically as security, as students are away for either their exams or preparing for college graduation. that begins in just a couple of days. students here did say they actually met with the university's president, paul fitzgerald, for about three hours. they talked about what it would take to break the encampment down at welch field, but there was no agreement. a graduation, as i mentioned, at usf, starting soon, at the end

of the week, commencement ceremonies will begin at saint ignatius church, just next door to where these tents are pitched. now, university officials say the students need to be out of here by 3:00 this afternoon. the school says the encampment is in violation of school code. and if protesters stay, the university says they will lose their opportunity for amnesty. >> we're not really completely sure what that's going to look like, you know? so that is giving a lot of students here anxiety, especially students that are high risk because this school is a private university, students are paying $70,000 a year to go here. >> april 29th. that was day one for these encampments. and they have remained peaceful since. students here say president fitzgerald told them they wouldn't need to worry about any police or university raids unless that peace changes and they start enacting violence violence, which the students say is not in their plans. protest they also say they've gotten a great deal of support, including a number of jewish students who

weeks now, they say. dennis chow of hayward is dealing with serious mental health problems. the 25 year old has no money or cell phone. family members say he has not been seen since april 23rd, just ten days after the first time he wandered away from his home. they found him at one point, but say he ran away from a hospital. >> we found him at dublin bart station and when we found him, his feet were heavily blistered and the day after we drove him to the er here in hayward, where he was able to get seen for all of those blisters he had on his feet. but to also get a psychiatric evaluation from the doctor for the family says they're frustrated that he was allowed to escape from the hospital. >> and with law enforcement,

very close to the google campus. we're in an area called the charleston park. and this is where just in the last 15 minutes or so, we've seen about ten to maybe 20 or so people who we believe are part of this group staging this protest at the google campus today, today, of course, is google's flagship developers conference that is happening. thousands are expected to attend the conference in person and online from around the world. and that is why the group that calls itself no tech for genocide is staging a protest here today. the focus of that organization is a program called project nimbus, which the group says is being used to target innocent civilians in the war in gaza. since 2021, google and amazon have provided cloud computing service, artificial intelligence and other tech services to the israeli government through project nimbus. last month, nine google workers staged a sit in protest in the office of one of the executives overseeing the program. that protest lasted for several hours. those nine

deadly crash in central florida involving a farm worker bus. investigators say that a bus carrying about 53 farm workers was heading to a farm when the vehicle and a pickup truck sideswiped each other. here. we see the bus on its side. after the crash, the bus veered off the highway, went through a fence, overturned. eight people aboard the bus died at the scene. 45 other people were taken to the hospital with injuries. at this point, we know at least eight of them are in critical condition. >> a family in rio vista is asking for help after a mother of three was killed in a car crash late friday night. jessica hey was headed home from the concord drive in with her
