state valkyries. more on the bay area's new wnba team. the brand and the significance. >> yes, this is katie icu fox two news at 730. >> boy, it has been an exciting day here in the bay area. thanks so much for joining me on this tuesday night. i'm heather holmes or shall we call it valkyries night? the new franchise becoming the 13th team in the wnba merchendise with the newly revealed team name and logo already available at chase center in san francisco. the image honors both san francisco and oakland, where the team will practice united by the bay bridge. in case you're wondering , a valkyrie is a female figure in norse mythology who chooses the fate of warriors in battle. this brand is golden state's modern interpretation of valkyries strong, bold, and fierce team. general manager ohemaa nianhan reacted to the new look and name. >> it's powerful. i'm going to

be a part of a lot of firsts with this organization. i'm so excited to get to know what this name means and i'm leaning in 100. my whole self is going to be devoted to the team. >> the valkyries are set to start playing in the wnba next season at chase center. they are the first expansion team in the league since 2008. earlier today on the floor, i spoke with the head coach of the cal women's basketball team, shaman smith, who also was a coach and player in the wnba. she says there is a sense of momentum in women's professional sports, one that the bay area can capitalize on. >> the work is there. it's going to be challenging, but there's no better time than right now for women's basketball. and in that way, the people are going to come. the people are going to be excited about this team, i'm not sure exactly how the expansion draft will work, but i know that there will be talent in the bay in 2025, this is

going to be a team to reckon with, we certainly hope so. smith says that players are going to be excited to represent this team, adding that she's looking forward to working with the golden state valkyries as they search for players. san francisco mayor london breed also crazy about the team name and logo, posting this video to x. >> last year, we announced that a new wnba team is coming to chase center and today they're officially announcing their new name. many of you know and love the golden state warriors. well, now we have the golden state valkyries. >> she's already got her merchendise there breed praising the choice of the name, saying it's one that matches the strength and spirit of our city. with your unwavering passion and support, we're ready to soar to new heights. we can't wait to show the world what the golden state valkyries are made of, and it's not just bay area fans going nuts over the team, it's a hit at the white house as well.

vice president kamala harris and oakland native of course tweeting a welcome to the league valkyries. glad to see you representing the bay area in the wnba. let me know what you think about the new team name and logo . also, you can stay up to date on everything related to the valkyries right there on our website. just head to ktvu.com. you can also download the fox local app for more coverage. well, new. at 730 tonight, voters in san francisco could be asked to approve a $390 million bond measure. all to help revitalize the city. mayor london breed introducing the measure today, backed by six supervisors, the funding falls into four main categories. they include public health facilities such as zuckerberg, san francisco general shelter and housing for homeless families, street safety and road repaving, and public space and park improvements. if this is approved by the maud by the board, the measure will then go on the november ballot. staying in san francisco tonight. and boy, it was a dramatic scene in the richmond district today.

police say two robbery suspects were detained after crashing their car right into an apartment building. a crystal bailey joins us now with more on this dramatic end to a crime. crystal >> well, heather, the damage left behind was pretty extensive when a car slammed into someone's home. people who lived there hearing a loud crash and feeling the building shake. police say it stemmed from a violent robbery turned hit and run. it all started when police were called to a mugging at the corner of balboa street and 26th avenue at around 1030 tuesday morning. >> they threw a woman down, took her, took her bag, and then that they jumped in the car. and then we're running away. and the cops saw them. >> police say they started to chase the suspects, but the officers ended their pursuit for the safety of people in the area. but the suspects in a gray honda accord continue, and witnesses say they saw the gray honda accord coming down cabrillo at high speeds, hitting a mini cooper in the intersection before it slammed into this wall, narrowly missing

the elderly man inside. >> that is the wall to his bedroom. his bed is on the other side of the room. >> thankfully, dennis crosby, who lives in a flat upstairs, says he felt the building shake during the impact. >> oh, i felt it right when the crash happened. >> i walked right across the intersection here and got to about halfway through and the two guys jumped out. one ran this way, one ran this way, neighbor josh steele says he saw it all unfold. >> the mini cooper crashing into a pole on the sidewalk after getting hit by the suspect car. >> stupidly, they gave like a couple, you know, like a little bit of chase. saw the guy think he looked like he had a gun. so i turned back around. >> steele after checking on the woman in the mini cooper, says he saw a gun on the floorboard of the suspect's car. witnesses snapped this photo of the two men after the crash and shared it with officers. >> about 20 minutes later, they were still hanging around the neighborhood, leading police to detain them. >> it's an act of god that there was nobody standing on this corner when this car came through. >> this kind of stuff doesn't happen too often in this neighborhood. it's pretty quiet

out here most of the time now. >> the man who lives there is displaced as workers try to patch up the wall. and the woman who was in the mini cooper, christina swanson, tells me she walked away with some scratches and possibly bruised ribs. thankfully, there were no life threatening injuries in this situation. investigators are asking anyone with information to contact sfpd. >> heather. yeah. wild scene. thankfully, no one was was seriously hurt. all right, crystal, thank you. governor newsom stopped in the bay area today to announce an update to the recently passed proposition one. newsom met with state and county leaders at a mental health center in redwood city. he says the state will soon make more than $3 billion available to help build behavioral health treatment beds and sites. applications for the funding were set to open in the fall, but will now be fast tracked to begin in july. >> $3.3 billion on the notice of funding availability will go out. we will quickly approve those plans because we have a new task force and strike team

around this, breaking down all of the boxes. >> voters narrowly approved the measure at march. it authorizes the state to use $6.4 billion in bonds to build housing and treatment beds for people experiencing serious mental health, illnesses and addiction. the alameda county board of supervisors is expected to vote later tonight on a date for the recall election of district attorney pamela price. supervisors are considering two options they could call a special election that would cost 15 to $20 million, or they could combine it with the november election for $4 million. the registrar voters and price's attorney both want the vote. in november. members of the public spoke out at the board meeting this evening. >> we can't afford to hold a special recall election that will cause. taxpayers $20 million at a time of the budget deficit that we are going

to stock a medication for treating opioid use disorder. this is all under a new proposed legislation. supervisor matt dorsey and the department of public health introducing that measure today. they say it would make it easier for people to access the drug called bipolar. but i'm sorry. by producing, the medication is used to reduce opioid use and cravings. a study by the health department this year found fewer than half of the retail pharmacies in the city had that drug in stock. a group of doctors, public health experts and community organizers are rallying today to call on san francisco city leaders to do more to address the drug overdose crisis. the group gathered outside the city's medical examiner's office today to bring attention to the more

than 3000 people who died from overdoses in san francisco since 2020. they say there needs to be a greater health response to try to keep people alive, and earlier today on the four, we spoke with laura thomas, the director of harm reduction policy at the san francisco aids foundation. she says there needs to be better access to life saving solutions. >> the single most effective treatment for opioid use disorder is methadone, which has been around for decades. it's very well researched. it's extremely effective, but it is highly, highly regulated. and so people can only take it by going to certain places where they have to go every single day. health experts are also calling for evidence based public health strategies to help support those who are struggling with addiction. >> happening now, the half moon bay planning commission is holding its third meeting regarding an affordable housing project for senior farmworkers.

the san mateo county board of supervisors has already approved funding for the project, after last year's mass shooting exposed the poor living conditions of farm workers. however, the planning commission has delayed development, now twice citing concerns with the design. this caught the attention of governor newsom, who threatened legal action if the project does not move forward. we're going to stay on top of this meeting and have a full report coming up tonight at ten. okay, it is a early tuesday evening and want to check in now with mark with a look at the forecast, because it was pretty nice out there today. yeah. nice. much of the bay area. >> yeah. after that chilly start this morning. kind of a nice recovery this afternoon. so we're kind of in that comfortable range right. yeah. just i'll take it. not too cold, not too hot. and we'll take a look at the highs from this afternoon. and as you take a look at these highs, this will kind of be the forecast over the next several days right on into the weekend. so no major heat in our forecast. we get a break from those toasty temperatures. san francisco 62, concord 80 degrees san jose in the upper

70s. and what has happened is just a change in the marine layer somewhat. and it's kind of deepened a bit now. as a result, it's making its way all the way across the bay into some of the inland valleys. so we're not talking about any triple digits or 90s, just some low to mid 80s for the warm locations here in the bay area, we are watching the low clouds just offshore here and also some thunderstorm activity. as you can see out in the southern sierra approaching fresno over the past few hours. but for us, we're just tracking the low clouds and fog getting their act together in the short term. current numbers right now san jose 68, santa rosa 65. san francisco has cooled off to 54 because the low clouds already kind of blanketing a good portion or parts of the city. take a look at the wind reports right now. look at oakland airport gusting to 37 miles an hour. some more reports for you, the sfo and north wind at 18 miles an hour. so here is our live camera looking out toward whether it was looking out toward the golden gate bridge. and there's a low cloud deck kind of hiding the south tower here. so lots of overcast to talk about near the coast and near the bay. and we are expecting some more low clouds

first thing tomorrow morning, maybe even some drizzle out there as well. so overnight temperatures starting out the day in the 50s. here's the forecast model not only near the coast and right around the bay, but we could have some patches head all the way inland tomorrow morning at 7:00 and then into the afternoon hours. we are expecting some cool conditions, coast side and then some warm conditions inland. the warmest locations and the low to mid 80s so there's not too much happening. we have this area of high pressure here out in the pacific. this area of low pressure down in southern california. and we're still going to keep the low clouds and fog around, at least for the morning hours. so cool for the beaches. it is warm inland. you can see those numbers back up into the 80s for tomorrow afternoon. so some clouds out there, partly sunny into the afternoon. hours more sunshine out toward concord, antioch and livermore. and here is a look ahead. your five day forecast and minimal change over the next several days. we'll have the clouds in the morning, maybe some drizzle, gradually clearing back to near the shoreline, and temperatures could actually cool off just a touch. as we head into your weekend outlook. heather. >> thank you. mark. an update now to a tragic story that we

told you about over the weekend. the contra costa county medical examiner has now identified the little five year old boy who drowned over the weekend at bethel island as lucas zhang of livermore. a diver found the boy in the water inside a cove saturday afternoon. it's believed that he had been in the water for about 15 minutes. rescuers performed cpr and rushed the boy to a hospital where he died. authorities say lucas made his way to the water through a backyard next to the shoreline. we're following the campus protests that had taken over a number of universities across the country, including the decision, though, by demonstrators at uc berkeley to dismantle theirs. plus, we won't stop killing in the castro protesters on the peninsula, disrupting google's biggest conference of the year. the demands they have for the tech giant, plus the oakland ballers getting ready for the new season where fans can watch their ame next week

protesters now dismantling their encampment. they did so just a few hours ago. demonstrators were seen putting away their gear. a uc berkeley spokesperson said the university will meet with protesters and listen to their concerns. if the encampments come down. the encampment first emerged there at sproul plaza weeks ago and unlike so many other encampments across the country, the situation here has largely remained peaceful, with uc berkeley officials taking a hands off approach to the encampment. it is a very different scene, though, at the university of san francisco, where student protesters there are now defying an ultimatum to remove their encampment from campus. student organizers held a rally at the university at three this afternoon. that was the deadline that the school's president gave to the antiwar protesters to leave the site. the students have been camping

now for two weeks. they're calling for the university to to the war in israel. and to support palestinians in gaza. >> we've had folks whose friends lost 30 over 30 people from their family entire, like bloodlines lost. so all of this really, like, amplifies the need for us to be a voice for the people who don't have a voice. >> usf president paul fitzgerald said the university would call for a ceasefire in gaza and researched the addition of palestine studies as part of an agreement to disperse, but students say they plan to remain there on site until they have assurances of more action in silicon valley, protesters tried to shut down google's biggest conference of the year. ktvu jesse gary tells us how the tech giant's billion dollar contract with israel continues to be a lightning rod for pro-palestinian supporters who our freedom. >> we say how tuesday in mountain view, old chants

a 55 year old amy gubser became the first person ever to swim from the golden gate bridge to the farallon islands without a wetsuit. it took her 17 hours to complete the nearly 30 mile trek. the neonatal nurse, who works in the pediatric intensive care unit at ucsf, told us she's planning and has been planning and training for this swim for five years. >> the swim came together with the perfect tide window and the perfect currents and the perfect weather, and my team was excellent, she told us. >> the water temperature dropped to as low as 43 degrees. in fact, her team had to give her a hot chocolate and hot water that she poured onto her neck as she swam to fight the cold. congratulations to her. thanks so m for joining
