dragged by one of its robo taxis in san francisco last year, according to bloomberg. the exact amount of the settlement has not been made public, but it's believed to be between 8 to $12 million in october. the cruise driverless car dragged that woman 20ft after she was hit. the dmv suspended cruise's driverless taxi license in san francisco after the company allegedly withheld crash video and lied to investigators. the company then stopped all of its driverless operations, as it was the da's first public statement since alameda county supervisor said a date last night for her recall election. >> voters will decide whether to remove her from office during this year's general election. november fifth. katie's allie rasmus explains the reasons behind the decision and how the alameda county da herself responds. >> the board of supervisors yesterday did the right thing and decided not to invest $20 million of our hard earned tax dollars for a failed effort to overturn the november 2022 election. >> speaking for the first time

publicly since a date was set, alameda county district attorney pamela price applauded the board of supervisors decision to hold her recall election on november 5th, not this summer, as recall supporters had wanted the decision came down to cost and convenience. the alameda county registrar of voters told the supervisors it would cost between 15 to $20 million to hold a special standalone recall election this summer. alameda county has 940,000 registered voters. the entire voter information guide has to be paid for by that one election, not shared by other jurisdictions. >> the printing of the ballot, you know, all of the postage costs. >> but he said if the recall was combined with the general election in november, it would only cost the county 4 million, which she says breaks down to 4 to $6 per voter. the county already has plenty of election workers, staff and equipment already in place. on november fifth, so supervisors chose that option. the decision came after two hours of public comment for and against the recall. more

than 100 people signed up to speak. >> da price should not face voters again until she nears the end of her first term. this is what voters expect when we elect our representatives. recall should be a last resort. >> there are so many businesses that are closing down because they are. the da is not prosecuting these criminals. >> in april, the alameda county registrar voters certified that recall supporters had gathered enough signatures to qualify for a recall election. once that certification happens, there are strict timelines. the county has to follow under state law to set a date for the election. the board was coming up on a deadline last night. >> what i'm going to do now is what the voters of alameda county elected me to do. i'm going to work on our behalf to protect public safety. yes, yes, we're going to prosecute people as we have been supporters of da price liked the idea of having the recall election with the general election in november, not just because of the cost savings, but because general

elections during a presidential election year tend to have higher voter turnout. >> and her supporters believe that will work in her favor to help her keep her seat in oakland. allie rasmus ktvu, fox two news a new survey found that the number of homeless people in oakland grew by 9% over the past two years. >> that's despite a drop at 3% in alameda county. overall, the figures come from a one day point in time count from january , when more than 1000 volunteers gathered information across the county. oakland's increase in its homeless population was smaller than in previous years, and the reduction in alameda county's numbers was the first recorded in years. >> a pro-palestinian protest encampment at uc merced is getting larger. the encampment was set up on sunday. now, several protesters from the uc berkeley protest are expected to move there. uc regents are also in a second day of a three day meeting on the uc merced campus. they're discussing uc investments and long term funding. the protesters are calling on the regents to divest in companies that provide support to israel. during the

war in gaza, free palestine. protesters took down their encampment yesterday at berkeley after reaching an agreement with that school. chancellor carol christ agreed to do a comprehensive examination of university investments and terms of a socially responsible investment strategy. under the agreement, the uc berkeley foundation will review all investments and listen to community concerns about companies that maye linked to weapons manufacting, mass incarceration and surveillance industries. berkeley did not commit to making any changes to investments for the time being. the university of san francisco does not plan to take down an encampment on its campus, but protesters there are warned they could be suspended or expelled for violating the code for student conduct. united will never be defeated. the protesters ignored a deadline of 3 p.m. to leave the campus and staged a rally. they set up tents two weeks ago and demanded that usf, a private institution, divest from companies linked to israel, along with supporting palestinian on campus or in

gaza. >> we've had folks whose friends lost 30 over 30 people from their family entire for like bloodlines lost. so all of this really, like amplifies the need for us to be a voice for the people who don't have a voice. >> university leaders told the protesters they're willing to call for a ceasefire in gaza and also give the student protesters 1 or 2 seats on an investment task force. the university also said it would research changes in the curriculum, like adding palestine studies. this afternoon, protesters at san francisco state university will announce they've reached an agreement with the school. the student protest started more than two weeks ago. the protesters now say san francisco state has agreed to divest from weapons manufacturers, while also creating ways to develop new screening procedures to make preventing investments in companies that violate human rights. >> there's still a major shortage of air traffic controllers, despite a surge in hiring last year, according to recent federal data. air traffic

control stations nationwide are still about 3000 controllers short. the faa says a shortage has led to flight delays and safety concerns, from tired controllers working overtime to cover gaps. the agency plans to fill nearly 2000 open controller positions by the end of september. the justice department accused boeing of violating a settlement that allowed the company to avoid criminal prosecution after two deadly crashes involving its 737 max planes more than five years ago. a filing in federal district court in texas says boeing failed to make promised changes to detect and prevent violations of federal anti-fraud laws. well, now it's up to the justice department to decide if it will file charges against boeing. new video has been released showing the moment part of a plane caught fire after arriving at seatac airport in washington. the delta flight had arrived from cancun on may 6th when a fire started near the nose of that aircraft. delta says the flight crew saw smoke after plugging into ground electrical power. people in the process in the plane were in the

process of deplaning at the time. passengers who were still on board were evacuated using slides. no one was hurt. the plane was an airbus a321 neo, less than two years old. >> an annual education trip from the south bay to the state capitol. this is the 21st year of the event. more than 200 students, parents, teachers, elected leaders and others loaded busses at san jose state. they're headed to sacramento to meet with state legislators to talk about education policy and school funding. >> this is an opportunity they can be a part of. and, you know, just strive for the stars. really and just learning. a lot of them are also really interested in policy and law, and they want to be lawyers or, you know, so being able to take part in this is it's great. >> some of those going on this morning's trip belonged to local school districts and school boards. their priority is to meet with lawmakers and urge them to preserve education funding. >> one of the bay area's most well known high school programs will play a midseason football game in london. the team at de

billion shipment in new weapons and ammunition to israel, while warning the government they have to do more to protect civilians in gaza. >> we can't have chaos and anarchy in gaza, so there needs to be a clear, concrete plan. >> the deal will likely include $700 billion in tank ammunition and $500 million in tactical vehicles. it's the first weapons transfer since the white house paused a separate shipment of 3500 bombs a week ago over concerns of full scale attack on the crowded city of rafah could kill a huge number of civilians. >> we have paused the shipment of 2,000 pound bombs because we do not believe they should be dropped in densely populated cities. >> they need 2,000 pound bombs because hamas is underground and dug in. they need precision guided heavy bombs to break up the tunnels. >> meanwhile, the house of representatives is set to vote on a republican bill this week that would force the white house to release any holds on weapons shipments to israel. >> the irony is what joe biden is doing for political purposes to try to appease the pro-hamas,

>> the names of all 282 law enforcement officers who died this year were also read aloud. oakland police officer twan lay is among the names added to the memorial. lay was shot and killed while responding to a burglary in process. back in december. >> people in the santa cruz mountains are among the tens of thousands of californians whose homeowners insurance is being canceled after several major carriers dropped coverage in our state last night, many packed an auditorium where they had a chance to speak to officials from cal fire, local government agencies and the state's department of insurance. many wanted to know what they should do if they've lost or are about to lose coverage. >> get out there and start shopping for coverage. you really have to search the entire market. that means contacting multiple agents before you give up and settle for a fare plan. >> one independent insurance agent said the price of insuring a home could be two and a half to three and a half times higher than it was just five years ago. some homeowners in the area say

they're looking to sell because they can't afford the rising costs. all right, so we are still dealing with the fog, the may gray across the bay area. >> we see the sun now, but depending on where you are you're dealing with the fog. mark, tell us a little bit more about that. >> yeah that fog definitely keeping those temperatures in check for today. so yeah, no 90s just barely in the lower 80s later on this afternoon. so it has been quite the dose of a low clouds and fog in the morning and this pattern, and wants to stick around somewhat over the next several days. in fact, we could cool things off a bit as we head into the weekend. what is happening in the marine layer has deepened a little bit. it doesn't take much, and as a result, that cooler air has been impacting the bayside locations and also some of the inland areas as well. here is a look at the satellite from this morning. as you can see, the clouds kind of filling the bay and then the last few frames trying to clear back to near the coastline. but we still have some overcast as you can see, out towards san francisco, out toward the golden gate bridge, the marin headlands, and still a few patches, kind of a sneaking into the bay, approaching richmond

and berkeley. so the cloud cover out there near portions of the shoreline. that's having a big impact on temperatures where we have some of the clouds, at least nearby. it's on the cool side. half moon bay, 55, san francisco right now, 59 degrees. some lower 80s out toward concord and livermore. so we have the have more sunshine for these for these neighborhoods and san jose right now checking in 71. we have some pretty strong winds out there. in fact, that was the case yesterday. and the winds will probably pick up later on this afternoon. so the winds right now actually in these panels are not too bad. we'll show you sfo winds at about eight miles an hour. but these winds will probably go up upwards of 25 to 30 miles an hour. once again into the afternoon hours. our view from the south bay still showing you some green hillsides, but the color is starting to change as of course, we say goodbye to the rainy season. it looks like we do not have any rain showing up, at least over the next five days, or even beyond. so forecast headlines, you know, at least in the short term here tonight, partly cloudy skies winds around 20 to 25 miles an hour. and then the extended forecast into the weekend. it is dry with the sun cloud mix and temperatures will be trending

down a little bit as we head into the weekend. so no major heat in our forecast. you can see what's happening is the area of high pressure is out here in the pacific. it's kind of expansive. you can see in the eastern pacific also this area of low pressure down in southern california. there both of these systems having somewhat of an influence on our weather pattern. but at least we're not talking about extremely cold temperatures unless you're out toward the coast or it's not extremely hot temperatures inland in the in the lower 80s. so cool for the shoreline, warm inland. and this will be the forecast we recycle over the next several days for thursday, friday and into the weekend. here we are this afternoon, still holding on to some patchy cloud cover near portions of the coastline. lots of sunshine for napa, concord, livermore, san jose, and morgan hill and then we're going to cloud things up once again tonight. this is tomorrow morning and maybe some drizzle out there first thing tomorrow morning. and kind of just like today, the clouds will be clearing back to near the coastline. so temperatures for this afternoon. bring the sweater. bring the jacket. maybe both. if you are heading now toward pacifica and portions of san francisco, right around the

bay, out toward oakland, we have some sunshine breaking out 71 and still some 80 sprinkled on the maps out toward concord, livermore, and antioch. here is your five day forecast and no big changes headed our way. as you can see, temperatures will be trending down a little bit into the weekend. a big serving of low clouds and fog in the morning. gradually clearing back to near the shoreline. so if you want to make outdoor plans, we're looking pretty good with no threat of rain at all over the next five days. with the exception of some drizzle. >> mark thank you. new details now about a cargo ship that slammed into the francis scott key bridge in baltimore. what deral investigators have uncove d in

it happened on a bridge that leads to pelican island. the galveston county sheriff's office says that a large piece of the bridge fell. video shows pieces of concrete on the barge. crews are working to clean up the oil spill right now. meantime, that cargo ship that crashed into baltimore's key bridge in march had two electrical failures minutes before the crash, and that experienced two blackouts a day earlier, according to a report by the national transportation safety board. both electrical outages caused several pumps that power the ship to stop working. now, about ten hours earlier, while the ship was still in the port of baltimore, it experienced two onboard blackouts. investigators are looking into whether the crew properly reported the power outages. >> russian troops are advancing

in northern ukraine as thousands of people are forced to leave their homes. this comes as secretary of state antony blinken announces more foreign aid. alex hogan reports this. russian forces gaining momentum in ukraine's second largest city, kharkiv, on wednesday. ukrainian officials say they sent reinforcements to defend the region, but were later forced to withdraw. some of their troops who were coming under heavy fire. the increased fighting also forcing nearly 8000 people in nearby border areas from their homes. >> my heart is broken. where are we going and where will we stay? they kicked us out of our family house. >> meanwhile, secretary of state antony blinken continued his visit in kyiv on wednesday, reassuring ukrainian officials of u.s. support. he announced an additional $2 billion worth of aid to help ukraine purchase military equipment and acquire weapons. >> president biden has been working to immediately push out all the assistance that comes with the passage of the

supplemental, and that is quite literally on its way. >> but ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky says more needs to be done to help his country's air defense. he says a time gap between the announcement of weapons packages and the actual delivery of those supplies is taking a toll on troops around kharkiv. >> it is important to make the implement of decisions and logistics more efficient. if we had already received two patriots for this region, it would have made a difference in the overall situation in the war . >> as russia advances, ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky is canceling all international events scheduled in the coming days in london. alex hogan ktvu, fox two news. the planning commission in half moon bay has approved a new housing development for senior farm workers. dozens attended last night's planning commission meeting that went well past midnight. a proposal to build a 40 unit, low income apartment complex for senior farm workers in downtown half moon bay has

been underway at the harvey milk terminal for quite a while now. they're set to open to the public next month. ktvu tom vacar has a look now at what passengers should expect your live at sfo. tom. hi >> well, you know, this airport is actually been in the recreation process for more than four decades and it's almost done. now this newest section is surely going to be, and you're about to see it, a real passenger pleaser. pretty much guarantee that terminal one renovations will complete a decades long project of what was once san francisco's oldest terminal, it is now totally reborn into the 21st century. everything here is state of the art and designed to move passengers and their baggage

through the security and baggage check process 30% faster than before. it also expands the airport's overall capacity. >> this section essentially gives us a brand new ticket counter space for two airlines. it gives us five more security checkpoint lanes on their own dedicated mezzanine level, and then also we get two additional aircraft gates and we get a post-security connector that links all of the terminals at sfo. post-security >> and get this all carry on items will go into one single large tub. not several of them to be inspected. only when the contents of a carry on trips on an array of high tech sensors. once through security, all terminals will be connected so folks can wander around the entire airport during long layovers. early check ins, delays, or switching aircraft. all of this goes live on june the 11th, and because of june the 11th, the airport will also be just a few days before that

97 years old reporting live tom vacar ktvu fox two news. it's a welcome addition to be short. >> tom, thank you so much for that report. well, two people are in custody after a chase in san francisco ended in a dramatic crash. police responded to reports of a mugging just north of golden gate park yesterday morning. police called off the chase of the suspects out of concern for the safety of the people in the area. the suspects continued speeding down cabrillo street before crashing into another car, then an apartment building. >> it's an act of god that there was nobody standing on this corner when this car came through. >> this kind of stuff doesn't happen too often in this neighborhood. it's pretty quiet out here most of the time. >> the two suspects were eventually arrested. the man who lives in the building is now displaced until repairs are made . chp investigating a deadly crash in redwood city. it happened on interstate 280 near edgewood road and little about 10:00 last night, a little past 10:00, chp says a truck was stalled in the right lane and another truck was pulled over to

help that driver. a bmw then crashed into those parked trucks. one person was killed, two others taken to the hospital. we don't know at this time if the person killed was in that bmw or one of the trucks. >> the family of a man who died in antioch police custody has settled with that city. a spokesperson for the family's lawyer says the antioch city council approved a $7.5 million settlement. 30 year old angelo quinto died in 2020 after being restrained by officers. his sister called 911, saying he was having a mental health crisis. when officers responded, they restrained him face down for several minutes. he fell unconscious and was pronounced dead at a hospital three days later. san jose police are searching for a man accused of sexually assaulting a girl who was walking home from school. investigators released these surveillance photos of the suspect, identified as 50 year-old julian salvador martinez. police say the girl was walking home on april 9th on south 11th street when a man grabbed her, pulled her underneath the 280 overpass and began assaulting her. the victim fought back and got away.

>> santa clara county. now a new proposal would ban homeless encampments near creeks. the santa clara valley water district is holding a special meeting on friday to discuss an ordinance that would make it illegal to camp near waterways owned or maintained by the district. valley water says a growing number of camps threatens the environment and workers, those caught violating the ordinance could face fines of up to $500 and 30 days in jail. summer is just over a month away and as it gets warmer , a new report from the cdc reminds us about how important water safety is. cdc reports that the number of drowning deaths are on the rise. from 2020 to 2022, more than 4500 people drowned on average each year. that's 500 more per year compared to 2019. the biggest rise has been among children. >> drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children on the autism spectrum up through age 14. >> just this last weekend, a young boy died while swimming near bethel island. the cdc says

even infants can have swimming lessons and that all children should wear life vests in water with strong currents. >> highway one through big sur is expected to reopen on friday. the stretch near rocky creek bridge, south of the carmel highlands, was closed last month due to damage by storms. caltrans crews hope to reopen it by memorial day weekend, but governor newsom toured the area and had some better news. >> caltrans is working overtime, subject to, you know, act of god extreme winds. unlike rain. but extreme winds will be able to achieve that. 630 this friday. highway one will be reopened earlier this month, the governor signed a state of emergency proclamation to secure $100 million in federal funding to repair the road. >> san francisco's aging water and sewage system is getting an upgrade. since 2005, the city's public utilities commission has been working on a $4.8 billion improvement project. so far, three reservoirs have been completed. two others will soon be finished, and repairs to

another are set to begin later this year. the goal of the project is to secure and protect the city's water supply in an emergency, such as an earthquake. >> what we're doing is focusing on the most critical pipelines that bring water to the critical facilities. we have used artificial intelligence technology to look at the likelihood of failure of our pipelines. >> the city says it has enough storage to provide water to everyone in san francisco for a week in case of an emergency. >> a public health warning has been issued in mendocino county due to an increase in syphilis and hiv cases, according to county public health officials, 24 syphilis cases have been recorded in the past five months. that's at a rate that could exceed the 53 cases reported last year. officials haven't provided the exact number of hiv infections due to privacy concerns, but say the number has increased 100% from last year. house speaker mike johnson is defending former president trump as he faces a criminal trial. fox's nate foy has the latest on where the

gate on the road leading to the beach. he's fought several lawsuits to keep the property private. the lands commission is seeking a court order barring the man from blocking the road to the beach. the oakland ballers want to buy unused seats at the oakland coliseum to install at their new baseball field being built at raymond park, the ballers have formally asked the coliseum joint powers authority for the right to buy about 5000 bleacher seats. the seats were used when the raiders played at the oakland coliseum. they've been sitting unused in the parking lot of the stadium since the team moved to las vegas. if the purchase is approved, the ballers would install them for the 2025 season as part of an expansion to facilitate to the facility they're building in west oakland, the oakland unified school district is teaming up with the student transport company zoom to make its school busses greener. >> they're launching the first major all electric vehicle bus fleet in the nation. its consist of 74 electric busses with each carrying a battery pack that's 4 to 6 times bigger than a standard ev car battery. each bus will have its own fast charging station, which means

officers memorial day is holding its annual peace officers memorial ceremony this noontime at the sheriff's headquarters in san jose. since 1862, seven santa clara deputies have been killed in the line of duty. since 1924, 13 san jose police officers have been killed. family members of some of the fallen are at the ceremony today. >> we blur those boundary lines and we jointly celebrate their service, one filled with honor,

integrity and heroism. >> in 1962, president john f kennedy proclaimed may 15th peace officers memorial day, one of two days in which the federal law requires american flags be lowered to half staff. the other is memorial day. well police in vacaville are warning parents about increased reports of children playing with play guns that look like the real thing in schools and public parks, too. >> officers say when it's hard to tell if a child is holding a real weapon, it increases the risk of someone getting hurt. in many cases, the children are playing with water guns or b-b guns. some are brightly colored and obviously toys, but others are black and much more difficult to identify as toys. >> i would hate to see a situation arise where somebody mistook it for a real gun, and it could be an officer or somebody with a concealed carry permit that felt they needed to defend themselves. >> it's really concerning. and i don't think i would want to be in the park with somebody with a bb gun.

>> officers say people seen using or discharging toy firearms could face penalties. >> as governor, newsom was in san mateo county, where he announced money generated from proposition one will become available sooner than planned. ktvu political reporter greg lee shows us more than $3 billion will help build behavioral health treatment facilities statewide. >> governor gavin newsom walked with state and county leaders at cordillera mental health center in redwood city. the san mateo county facility set to open a new expansion in a few months. the backdrop for the governor to announce the state's expediting funding from proposition one, which aims to tackle the state's homelessness crisis. >> $3.3 billion on the notice of funding availability will go out. we will quickly approve those plans because we have a new task force and strike team around this breaking down all of the boxes. >> voters narrowly approved the measure in march. in part, it authorizes the state to use $6.4 billion in bonds to build housing and treatment beds for people experiencing serious mental health illnesses and

addiction. applications for the funding were set to open in the fall, but will now open in july for cities, counties and organizations to build or improve centers like this, prop one encourages counties to be ambitious about behavioral health care services and to address the root causes of the many challenges our communities face. cordillera has not received any prop one funding yet, but newsom used it as an example of what the state wants to see. to underscore the point, a woman whose son receives care here spoke about its efficacy. >> i wish every county had available for mentally ill clients what this county has available. >> not everyone agrees disability rights california opposed prop ones passage and said in a statement. drc opposes governor newsom's behavioral health system reforms, which expand forced treatment using proposition one. money to build locked facilities will harm people with mental illness and substance use disorders. prop one also reworks attacks for mental health services,

>> i'd love to go there. yes, i love it here, but i'd love to go check that out for a visit as well, for sure. all right. meteorologist mark tamayo is back with us this hour to talk a little bit about our forecast. and, mark, are we going to get that mediterranean climate that they have in italy here? >> well, we could we could pretend, right. yeah. yeah, we get the bay area climate, right. lots of low clouds and fog. and that's what we have this morning and into the afternoon hours, clearing back to near the shoreline. so it's going to be a familiar theme for us. cool temperatures, coast side, lots of sunshine inland and winds out of the southwest at about 20 to 30 miles an hour. so in some cases, some cases, some neighborhoods, it's on the cool side, temperatures below the average. so no, no major heat in our forecast at all. showing you this. the low clouds from this morning clearing back to near the shoreline, as you can see, out towards santa cruz, out toward portions of the coast right around san francisco's ocean beach, the marin headlands, and still some patches kind of pushing into a san francisco bay right now. current numbers. it's on the cool side in san francisco, 59, we have 72 in concord, hayward 66, palo alto 66. in san jose,

checking in 71 winds. not too bad right now, but as you take a look at these numbers, these values will likely go up into the afternoon hours. we'll probably have winds going up above 20 miles an hour. so right now, most areas actually in the single digits for this afternoon, sfo winds at about eight miles an hour. and here is our live camera looking out toward sfo with some clearing up above. but here we go with that fog bank out here, hanging out near portions of the coastline. so not completely clear near the coast. here's what's happening. this area of high pressure keeping us dry in this area of low pressure, kind of enhancing the marine layer somewhat. and we're kind of caught in between. so no drastic changes with our forecast. you can see a cool temperatures for the beaches. it is warm inland for today. and this pattern, it wants to stick around as we head toward the weekend in fact, temperatures could actually cool off a little bit by saturday. here's the forecast model this afternoon showing you this some cloud cover out toward half moon bay, out towards san francisco. at least some patchy cloud cover. and then we're going to bring in the overcast once again into the overnight hours and your

thursday morning, and maybe a bit of some drizzle near portions of the shoreline as well. and then we'll have the same forecast for tomorrow for your thursday. so just a minor tweak in the forecast with temperatures eventually trending down as we head toward the weekend. but still we have some 80s out there. remember last week at this time we were preparing for some 90s across parts of the bay area. definitely a cooler pattern setting up this week and this pattern will stick around over the next several days. here is your five day forecast. partly sunny for your thursday. slightly cooler for your friday, and then we'll have just a basically a minor cooling trend into the weekend. so the heat is out of here. it's going to remain cool to mild to warm over the next several of the next several days, but at least the heat will not to complicate outdoor plans. and the rainfall will not complicate outdoor plans. pretty quiet weather pattern over the next several days. >> mark. thank you. a pacifica woman made history with an open air swim. open water swim that presented a number of challenges. 55 year old amy gubser became the first person to swim from the golden gate bridge to the farallon islands

without a wetsuit. she completed the nearly 30 mile swim in 17 hours. gubser is a neonatal nurse who works in the pediatric intensive care unit at ucsf, says she's been planning and training for the swim for five years. but even so, she was surprised by the water's temperature. >> each mile. the temperature kept dropping and dropping and dropping, which i was prepared for. i wasn't prepared for the 43 degree water, but i was prepared for higher 40s now to make the swim official. >> gubser couldn't touch a boat on her journey. she had a team following her on a boat, giving her hot chocolate and also hot water to pour on her neck as she swam. >> he was accepted to 120 colleges. we speak to a bay area high school student about his incredible academic accomplishment

brother are still there. he's now a graduating senior at head-royce, a private school in oakland with a 3.94 gpa. he tells me it was a challenge navigating the cultural differences between the two countries, taking it day by day like i had wonderful people around me, like my parents and my grandparents, that were helping me each step of the way. the 18 year old honed his singing skills. performing on the streets of san francisco gives me a lot of confidence and everything that i've tried in all the different academic realms that i'm interested in. >> i definitely always come back to music and singing because that's that's sort of my safe haven. >> among the college acceptance letters, he received was one from uc berkeley, and that's where helms decided to go. dad, a graduate of cal and now a tech entrepreneur, says he did not influence his son's decision. >> i gave him an encouragement to follow his dreams, not not go to berkeley specifically. this is the gown.

>> very, very exciting. this is the first time i'm opening it actually. >> helms is preparing for his high school graduation at cal. he plans to major in music and minor in global studies. his advice to other young people keeping your head up and going forward and prevailing and just going forward and not letting all the noise get to you, helms is scheduled to graduate from high school on june 8th. after that, he plans to go to peru to perform and by mid-august, he will start at cal in oakland. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> certainly a cool story there. congrats to him. the university of california board of regents panel approving a plan for ucla to pay uc berkeley $10 million a year because the bruins are leaving the pac 12 for the big ten. the money, which some are calling cal money, will go to help the golden bears athletic program. the payments will start this coming school year. the special committee on athletics said they will review the

payment plan after three years. now, initially, the money was to be paid for the length of the big ten's current tv contract, which goes all the way to 2030. happening today, the nfl releasing the schedules of each team. the official announcement is at 5:00 this evening, but some games have already been announced. the 40 niners hosting the new york jets on monday night football in week one, and we also now know that the 40 niners will not play in any of the international games this season. what is likely the most anticipated game for the niners, though this season comes in week seven, when they host the kansas city chiefs in a rematch of the super bowl. the game is set for october 20th at 1:25 p.m. new fox analyst tom brady will call the game, which you will see here on ktvu channel two. netflix will air two nfl games on christmas day this year. the streaming giant is teaming up with the nfl on a three year deal to show at least one christmas day game in 2025 and 2026. in addition to this

season, the teams will be playing have not been announced yet, and details of the deal have not been made public yet. the nfl is the first pro sports league to partner with netflix, who has been working on a strategy to get into the live sports game. >> afc, the new women's professional soccer team in the south bay will celebrate all bay area sports teams at its upcoming match. bay fc is set to take on the san diego wave at paypal park in san jose friday night. players will wear t shirts from the bay area sports teams, including the newest franchise, the wnba golden state valkyries. the team says it is happy to repay the support it's received from other franchises. well, the monterey bay aquarium is opening its doors to people who might otherwise not likely be able to visit. starting may 27th, the aquarium will provide free admission to anyone enrolled in snap benefits. they only have to bring their ebt card, and they can also bring up to four other people for free. the free admission is part of the national museums for all program, and i have heard of a program like that before. >> oh it's incredible. that is
