castor ktvu, fox two news. >> ktvu fox two news at five starts now. >> now at five, three decades behind bars, the man convicted of attacking nancy pelosi's husband inside his san francisco home learns his fate from a federal judge. >> violence and intimidation have no place in our community or our political discourse today . >> sentence comes six months after depape was convicted on federal counts. good evening, i'm cristina rendon, and hi, everyone. >> i'm frank mallicoat. a judge handed down that sentence today after depape was convicted of breaking into nancy pelosi's home in the city, seeking to hold her hostage and then bludgeoning her husband paul with a hammer. >> ktvu christian captain was inside the courtroom today. he joins us live from outside the hall of justice, where depape will soon be on trial again. christian, how did he react to this sentence? >> yeah, we were trying to keep an eye on him as the judge read that sentence and he did not

react very much as the judge handed down that 30 year sentence. inside san francisco's federal court building, u.s. district judge jacqueline scott corley handed down a 30 year sentence for david depape following his november conviction. christine pelosi, daughter of nancy and paul, read statements from both parents describing the impact the attack had on the pelosi family. paul pelosi saying, quote, ever since the defendant violently broke into my home and woke me up yelling where's nancy? at 2 a.m. on october 28th, 2022. my life has been irrevocably changed. the pap's attorneys asked the judge for 14 years. prosecutors asked for 40. the judge said depape didn't express remorse for trying to kidnap the former speaker, and also said she had to weigh the impact depapes actions will have on discouraging potential future politicians from ever entering public service because they're worried about the safety of their families. christine pelosi read a statement from her mother as well. the former of the speaker house, saying, quote, it

is therefore necessary that the guilty party sentence be very long as punishment for the attack and the injuries, paul continues to suffer and as a deterrent to others considering violence against public officials. ultimately, the judge sentenced apap to 360 months in prison, -18 months for the time he's already served. the u.s. attorney for the northern district of california, ismael ramsey, issued a statement read by a spokesperson outside of the court today. today's sentence reflects david depapes lack of remorse and contrition for violently assaulting mr. pelosi. >> the court's sentence will ensure that the pop will not be able to use violence to pollute the political process. >> the fbi also said the sentence should be lengthy. >> the brutal attack on paul pelosi in his home was not only an attack on an individual, but an assault on the very principles and safety and civility that formed the bedrock of our democracy. >> depapes family was at the courthouse today. his son speaking out after the sentence.

>> i think that's quite sad, i think that's a really long time, because if you think about it right, he's already nearly 50. he's he's basically it's just a death sentence. >> depape still faces trial in san francisco superior court. that's the criminal court here that is set to get underway next week. if he is convicted in san francisco superior court, his state sentence would run concurrently with his federal sentence. again, he's looking at 30 years, minus those 18 months in federal prison. we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> i'm sure a lot of relief for the pelosi family. christian in san francisco. thank you for that report. >> new at five tonight, a man charged with murdering two women in san lorenzo has been extradited back here to the bay area after he was arrested in kansas. howard reed was arraigned in a dublin court today. prosecutors have charged him with double murder in the

shooting deaths of 32 year old jingyi, melanie zhang and 38 year old dorothy mak. their bodies were found earlier this month inside a home they shared with the suspect. if convicted, reed faces up to 50 years to life in prison. >> a neighborhood in novato got a scare today when a tree fell onto two homes, rupturing a rupturing a gas line. it happened around 1230 this afternoon in the area of alameda, del prado, between cinnamon teal lane and puffin court. no one was hurt, but people inside of those homes had to evacuate while crews were investigating the leak. police say the leak was minor. it has since been cleared. the extent of the damage to the homes is not yet clear. >> the president of sonoma state university has announced his retirement one day after he was put on administrative leave for making controversial agreement with pro-palestine protesters. mike lee sent an email out to students and faculty on tuesday announcing the agreement, which included an academic boycott of israel. on wednesday, the cal

state university chancellor placed lee on administrative leave, accusing him of, quote, insubordination when making that agreement. then, late thursday, the chancellor put out another statement saying lee informed her of his decision to retire. nathan evans, of the school's academic and student affairs department, has been named the acting president. >> uc berkeley says they have identified eight of 12 protesters arrested last night at the antiwar encampment next to people's park. they say only one person was a student, and that law enforcement was called in because the group had vandalized a vacant building. ktvu jana katsuyama joins us live now with new details and reaction to these arrests. jana >> well, right now there are no police here at this site, at channing and bowditch. but if you take a look behind me, you can see that they have had private security guards who are watching this site. the university says that they have identified eight of the 12 people arrested, four of them they are trying to identify right now. i asked the

university to explain why this response here was so different compared to the other group protesting at sproul plaza, uc berkeley students say on campus, there has been a lot of talk about these recent protests. >> it's all over instagram, all over social media platforms. >> the lawn outside the uc berkeley building on channing way was clear friday after university workers cleared the lawn of the tents, signs and barriers that had been erected by protesters earlier in the week. overnight, uc berkeley police, along with officers from 20 different law enforcement agencies from foster city up to fairfield, were called in to remove the encampment. 12 protesters were arrested as police and riot gear erected barricades surrounding the protest site to keep other protesters from entering the area. a uc berkeley spokesman says police removed protesters from the building that had been vacant for several years. >> what happened at anna head was, from the very beginning, a criminal act. they broke into a

building, they vandalized the building, they trespassed on university property. >> on friday, the university says only one person was confirmed to be a uc berkeley student. four were berkeley residents, two were from the greater bay area, one is from colorado, and four others have refused to say their identity. so alameda county sheriff's office is investigating. the university says the law enforcement response was different from the resolution, with antiwar protesters in a different group at the sproul plaza encampment because those protesters did not break the law. >> we have always at uc berkeley responded differently to criminal activity than we have to violation of campus policies. >> some neighbors said they do not approve of people outside the community coming onto campus property, but others say they don't agree with the police response. when the protest had seemed peaceful. >> i don't think that police action among younger students, or just people of any sort, is necessary during demonstration of activism.

>> some people are taking this time and platform to speak up for their values, and that's something that berkeley prides itself on. so, you know, i'm here to support it in comparison to other college campuses and stuff. >> i do think that our protests have been a lot more peaceful, which is why we've all been pretty supportive of it. >> uc berkeley says the people were arrested on charges including vandalism, burglary and conspiracy. they say that no one was injured overnight during the arrests. >> christina. well, janet, what are the next steps for those people who are arrested? >> well, once they file their reports with the district attorney, it's really up to the alameda county district attorney as to whether she decides she wants to file the charges. i did put in a call to her office today. so far, we have not received any response. >> jana katsuyama live in berkeley tonight. jana. thank you. >> meantime, trucks carrying humanitarian aid for the gaza strip have crossed over a pier built by american troops. all

this comes as israeli forces locate more hostages. fox says alex hogan has our latest. >> israeli forces recovering the bodies of three hostages in the gaza strip overnight. the idf says that they were killed while trying to escape a music festival during hamas october 7th attack. more than 100 hostages are believed to still be in hamas captivity. >> we will leave no stone unturned. we will do everything in our power to find our hostages and bring them home. >> it comes as fighting rages in the northern and southern parts of the strip. israeli officials announcing plans to send more forces to the city of rafah. >> hamas is not an organization that can reorganize at the moment. it does not have reserved troops. we are cutting it off. we are wearing it down. >> meanwhile, trucks carrying desperately needed food, medicine and other supplies began crossing over a us built

pier into gaza on friday. the pier will complement what's what's going into gaza. >> there'll be a security issue there. the israelis are going to have to have to protect it for sure. >> with heavy fighting impacting land deliveries, military officials say the pier will allow for aid to be funneled into the strip from various countries. the goal is to have as many as 150 trucks enter the territory each day, but as some land routes remain closed, aid agencies fear the new shipments will not be enough to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe. >> getting aid to people they need into and across gaza cannot and should not depend on a floating dock. >> according to the un, about 500 aid trucks crossed into gaza daily before the start of the war in london. alex hogan ktvu, fox two news new at five tonight elon musk's effort to rebrand twitter has x. >> it's officially complete sites url is now x.com and

around one this morning of a nissan versa on fire in the area of crocker avenue and mendana boulevard. investigate crews say they were able to confirm this was arson. after reviewing surveillance video. anyone with information is asked to contact piedmont police. >> an oakland man who is about to turn 80 years old is dealing with the theft of his beloved 1959 corvette. thieves stole it from a garage, and as you might imagine, he is heartbroken. our crime reporter, henry lee is here now. after speaking with the victim. i can't even imagine. henry. yeah. >> this little red corvette has been a big part of his life. he loves cars and hot rods and says this convertible means everything to him. >> there's no consequences in this city. people can steal and rob dave, like taylor has been

robbed of his pride and joy. >> his bright red 1959 corvette that he's had for 18 years. >> oh, god, it's like a stab in the heart. >> he turns 80 on saturday, but he doesn't feel much like celebrating. surveillance video shows two guys breaking into a garage near east 22nd street and fifth avenue in oakland on april 15th. one of them scoots into the garage and the door shuts. less than three minutes later, one of the burglars opens the door and runs off as the other guy pulls out of the garage in the corvette. he eases out onto the street. here, the corvette rolls back a bit and hits the curb because it's on an incline. >> so they knew how to drive the car because it was a stick and they just went right out. >> like taylor hasn't seen his $200,000 car ever since. >> it hurts. it's because it's my life. my whole life has been the hot rod cars my since i was 14 years old. >> he's the ultimate car and racing enthusiast. his apartment's full of memories and photos from his racing da. this is like taylor in the red

least charges. >> mayor london breeds plan to bring two giant pandas to the san francisco zoo is getting some pushback from city leaders. the board of supervisors voted to postpone a request made by the mayor to raise $25 million to host the pandas once they're brought in from china. that money would go to address some of the zoo's infrastructure needs. supervisor asha sapphire was hoping to unseat the mayor this fall. says pandas are a distraction from the city's more pressing issues. >> this is about prioritizing our future. this is about prioritizing our children over pandas. and if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city. >> yes, city leaders suggest the mayor should be raising funds for the department of children, youth and their families instead , the mayor's office said they would support waivers for both endeavors. meantime, the last

u.s. zoo with pandas in its care won't have them much longer. zoo atlanta says panda parents lun lun and yang yang are, along with their american born twins, will be returned to china sometime between october and december. the pandas arrived from china in 1999 on a 25 year loan agreement, which expires this year. >> across the bay area this afternoon, mostly sunny skies away from the coast and those clouds are already working into the bay. a live look here at the golden gate bridge, where you can see the overcast sky, the onshore breeze turning on this afternoon as expected and our temperatures running just a little bit cool for this time of year. we will see temperatures change ever so slightly tomorrow. it looks like sunday could be a little bit warmer, but our pattern is pretty persistent. we have systems that are kind of dropping in from canada, creating a trough over the pacific northwest, and right now we've got some action right over montana. meanwhile, the ridge way off our coastline

back in 2016. these are still images that was posted on tmz's website, taken from the graphic video, which first aired on cnn. the rapper, wearing just a towel at the time, appears to chase ventura and then kick, punch and throw things at her, including a flower vase. the incident was detailed in a now settled lawsuit that ventura filed against diddy back in november. last month, federal agents raided his homes in la and miami in a sex trafficking investigation. >> it has been a whirlwind of a day for the world's number one golfer. scottie scheffler returned to the green in the pga championship today, just hours after getting arrested. fox's connor hansen shows us what happened and what's next for scheffler. >> hey guys guys, guys. >> a reporter catches on video the moment police handcuff scottie scheffler, the number one ranked golfer in the world. traffic had been brought to a standstill outside valhalla golf club in louisville, the site of

the pga championship, after a deadly accident just a couple of hours before his tee time. scheffler reportedly drove past an officer who told him to stop police say the officer grabbed onto the car until it stopped about ten yards later and was hurt in the process. >> he's going to jail and it ain't nothing you can do about it. >> scheffler was charged with second degree assault of a police officer, among other crimes, but he quickly went from his orange jumpsuit back to his golf gear for the tournament's second round. >> i was in shock and so i was i was shaking and it took me a little while, you know, in the car on the way over here to kind of calm down. can't comment on any specifics, but my situation will be handled. it was just a just a big misunderstanding. my heart goes out to the family, the golfers lawyer noted that he was in a marked pga vehicle and says scheffler never assaulted an officer and will plead not guilty. >> scottie scheffler was, you know, caught up in this and then all of a sudden, you know, was trying to follow directions of the police officers. he heard

highway one toward big sur. finally reopen this morning. the community had been landlocked and cut off from its lifeblood industry of tourism by highway closures, both to the north and

to the south. >> yeah, it's about time. ktvu fox two reporter mark sayer takes a look at the reopening and what it means for the business community there in the early morning fog, caltrans switched on a traffic signal that will allow both north and southbound traffic on highway one to share a single lane. >> this is only a temporary fix until the complete highway can be rebuilt, but it does now allow for 24 hour travel in both directions. the highway was closed on march 30th after what is called a slip out destroyed the southbound lane, forcing caltrans to escort residents in convoys two times per day to the business community and to the employees that work for the businesses. >> a tremendous change. it's really important. >> kirk garfield is the president of the big sur chamber of commerce. we've had seven weeks with effectively no business to speak of at all in the community. >> so we've had probably 90% of our employees collectively have either been furloughed or are working at very reduced hours to get this single lane of traffic

open before the critical memorial day weekend. >> caltrans has been working in two shifts. crews have actually been hoisted over the ocean by cranes, allowing them to work on the damaged section of the roadway, and we were able to drill 40 vertical and 75 horizontal bars in here, which really act as a grid to stabilize that southbound lane. >> we love our local community down here. >> colin touhig is the general manager of the big sur river inn. he says the community really pulled together during the closure, his restaurant even providing hot meals to the local elementary school when prepared meals could not be brought in. >> so three days a week, our chef cooked up school lunches for the captain cooper kids, and we did that, about 4 or 5 weeks. >> businesses say they are already getting calls for reservations. >> i think it's amazing. it's beautiful. >> park properly is exactly the kind of visitor this community likes to see. bringing his family from out of state to see the coast. >> so we're actually from michigan. i moved here recently

to la for work and so they visited just to see more of like the area. >> highway one to the south of big sur is expected to be reopened in the fall, with the complete repair to the northern section set for next year. i'm mark sayer, ktvu, fox two news. >> people in san francisco's hayes valley turned out for the opening of a new trader joe's this morning. store officials cut that ribbon at the new location on fulton street and laguna. this new store will feature over 12,000ft!s of familiar trader joe's favorites, the store's captain said. it's an exciting addition to the hayes valley neighborhood. it's been a lot of fun getting together, getting to have so many crew members join our team from the community. >> this is my neighborhood as well, so getting to be a part of this great journey. >> a regional manager says the store brought on about 100 employees. hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m, seven days a week, and there is parking available.

alameda is almanac brewery is expanding. the company is planning to open a second taproom in west oakland as part of a new food hall. the prescott market is set to open later this year near 18th and peralta, a development is aimed at bringing new people to that neighborhood. >> well, they call it the super bowl of craft beers in a bay area brewery is in the game. daca beer out of oakland is one of a handful of brewers that will take part in sam adams crafting dreams beer bash. that's next month. in june, they will be taking their asian inspired flavors to boston for a chance at a mentorship and a collaboration with the craft beer giant sam adams. the brewmaster and the founder of daca beer, telling us at four what winning that competition would mean. >> what i'm doing is pretty new in the industry, and just to be able to collaborate with the, you know, pioneer of the craft beer industry, that would just really mean a lot. and like the program name that would be sort of brewing our american dream. >> bay area residents can find

out what all the buzz buzz is about at this weekend's chicken and beer festival. that's in oakland's jack london square. that's happening tomorrow, starting at noontime at third and franklin, along with food and beer. there will be games and live music all day long. and as the contra costa county fair opens for its run, fair officials will maintain a rule imposed on fairgoers on the last day of last year's fair. the rule youngsters and young adults must be accompanied by an adult chaperon, ktvu tom vacar covered the opening today and reports from antioch with the story. >> fairs have been a part of the american culture for longer than there's been in america, and there have always been rules about competition and contests. but more and more, the rules are about safety. and that's what's going on in contra costa county. at last year's fair, punching, kicking and hair pulling brawls shocked other guests, staff and security. the fair closed early

that night and a strict rule was imposed back then, which continues this year. >> anybody 18 years or under is required to have a chaperon 25 years or older, and for each chaperon they can only have for 18 years. and under youth with them. >> so now you get the real county fair experience with the fair queen and her court making the rounds. add to that livestock rides, food, entertainment, arts, crafts and cooking competitions, a petting zoo, kids pedal tractor competition, chainsaw and cheese carving, auto racing and oh yes, even camel rides. >> we are a family friendly event and we want our family and friendly people to feel safe when they're out here at the fair. >> at the end of the day, rules are rules and if they can't be responsible on their own, sometimes you have to enforce, you know, a guide there to help. >> we need to have that kind of good atmosphere and, joy, if you will, for the fair. >> fair goers and participants alike love the rule and all the
