served time for assault on a police officer is identified as the suspect who fired at police over the weekend in a san jose neighborhood. >> plus, there's also a continuum of collaboration that needs to happen, so that we have a resilient system in this county. >> increasing concerns over a lack of ambulances and emergency resources. officials in contra costa county tonight, looking for ways to address the issue. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> ambulance service challenges that only seem to be getting worse. thanks so much for joining me on this monday night. i'm heather holmes, contra costa fire says they are at a crisis point. our crystal bailey is here now with more on the situation and possible solutions . crystal. >> well heather hospital wait times for ambulances in contra costa county are far above the state standard of 20 minutes, and the issue is not new and it's not unique to contra costa county. >> it's my personal opinion that that emergency medical services

ems in this state needs a significant overhaul. >> the number of calls for ambulances is straining the system, according to officials in contra costa county, an issue that was highlighted after the number of ambulances available reached the number zero on the saturday before mother's day. >> there's 911 calls keep coming in and ambulances sit at hospitals with patients unable to transfer the patient to the hospital, the situation becomes worse and the number of available ambulances gets reduced. >> this isn't a new thing. this has happened periodic over the years and it's not unique to contra costa. >> since september, the number of ambulances has increased from 54 to 72 per day, but officials say they've received 240 calls for an ambulance this year alone. more than two thirds of them needed serious advanced medical attention, and paramedics are hard to hire and keep. >> we are putting up to a dozen firefighter emts through paramedic school, and then our subcontractor, amr, is also

putting many of their emts who want to become paramedics through this paramedic school. >> hospitals are overburdened and understaffed with hospital wait times for ambulances up to an hour at places like contra costa regional and john muir. walnut creek. >> we have seen some success with sutter delta in antioch, who has reduced their ambulance patient offload time in the last 12 months by a full 50, fire chief louis brochard says this is a system wide issue happening across the state. >> but in contra costa county, he's working on implementing a program called nurse navigation, where 911 callers who don't need an emergency transport can set up a doctor's appointment. >> the whole point is to try and take demand down so that not everything is a 911 emergency. not everything requires a paramedic transport to the hospital. not everything even requires transport to the hospital and the nurse navigation program would cost the county about $600,000 a year, but could alleviate the system.

>> and supervisor burgess also wants the community to know that if you do experience a crisis, please call 911. you are not going to be stranded. someone will arrive to help you. >> heather. right nonetheless, though, a challenge that still exists. all right. crystal, thank you. new at 730 tonight, an oakland man has been charged in connection to a large retail theft at a walgreens in san francisco. joe malaki ricard has pleaded not guilty to all charges of burglary, grand theft and organized retail. petty theft. authorities say that ricard is part of a group that targeted the walgreens on castro street in noe valley just last wednesday, and stole thousands of dollars of merchandise. ricard has been released on his own recognizance. he is expected to appear again in court next week. san jose police said today that the man who allegedly fired at random in a neighborhood and then a police is a felon who was armed with an unregistered gun. police say that 41 year-old ricardo villarreal drove up to the k and k apartments in east san jose around four yesterday afternoon. he is seen in this

security camera video getting out of a minivan and for reasons still unknown, opening fire indiscriminately. people at the apartment complex call police when officers arrived, they say villarreal shot at them. >> that's a frequent occurrence. we often find felons in possession of firearms. that was the situation in 17 days ago, and so that's part of what we were trying to figure out as part of what we're trying to convene a group of people together to figure out why in san jose, we are seeing this uptick in violence directed gun violence directed at our police officers. i've been doing this a very long time. i've never seen us san jose police officers take so much gunfire in such a short period of time. >> villarreal was eventually cornered by three officers, and that's when he was shot. he is in critical condition. police said today that villarreal was convicted for assault with a deadly weapon on an officer and was on probation. detectives say this is the third time this year that san jose police have been shot at the department is working with the northern california bureau of alcohol,

tobacco and firearms to try to track the origin of the gun that was used in yesterday's shooting. home depot has been fined more than $1.3 million as part of an arson investigation into a massive fire. dylan gog, who who you see here was charged with the arson for setting the san jose home depot on fire back in april of 2022. his case is still pending. the santa clara county district attorney's office now says the store had several fire code violations that hurt firefighters ability to save the building, including a water sprinkler system that was not working. firefighters were also blocked from the fire lane by improperly stacked pallets. the two half moon bay mushroom farms were mass shootings took place last year, now being ordered to pay thousands of dollars in back wages and damages. a u.s. department of labor investigation has recovered more than $450,000 for 62 workers at concord farms and california terra gardens. the labor department also assessed penalties after investigators found the farms underpaid

workers and provided unsafe housing conditions. the wage recovery and fines are part of a settlement reached for several violations of the migrant and seasonal agricultural worker protection act, as well as the fair labor standards act. the man convicted of breaking into nancy pelosi san francisco home and assaulting her husband with a hammer will be resentenced next week. on friday, david depape was sentenced to 30 years in prison for that break-in and attack. however the federal judge presiding over the case says she made a clerical error by not giving depape a chance to speak in court during the proceedings. his sentence is not expected to change earlier today on the four, though, i spoke with legal analyst michael cardoza and he says if depape shows remorse, it is possible the judge could knock off a few years. what's he going to say? >> that's a decision that the pope and his attorneys have to make, whether he's going to apologize. but if he apologizes for it, it's going to be interesting to see what the

judge does. does she then reduce the 30 years by a couple? i think that would kick up a dust storm. >> a new sentencing date for depape has been set for may 28th. new at 730 tonight, the state senate passed a bill to tackle rising prescription drug prices by cracking down on pharmacy benefit managers. state senator scott wiener has championed this bill. he says it would enact the nation's strongest protections against anti-competitive practices by pharmacy benefit managers. senator wiener says the bill aims to help create licensing and basic standards of conduct. the bill now heads to the state assembly, where it must pass by august 31st. we're learning more information tonight on that two alarm fire that happened at the tesla factory earlier this evening in fremont. the fire department says the fire started inside an oven around five this evening. skyfox shows crews there on the roof and around the building. fire crews say all employees have been accounted for. all right. it is a golf clinic that offers more than

oakland. temperatures this afternoon a few degrees warmer than yesterday. and concord and livermore. you are now seven degrees warmer compared to yesterday. meanwhile, closer to the water within a few degrees, four degrees warmer over areas of san carlos. novato, you're up by seven as well. 63 degrees for you there. we've got 59 in the city of san francisco and low 50s at half moon bay. so definitely cool here. but you go inland and wow, i imagine a lot of you wondering, should we have dinner outdoors? upper 60s, low 70s. still at this time, 71 degrees in walnut creek, 68 in alamo, closer to the water, though. take a look at what's going on over berkeley. 59 degrees. the futurecast model here. so temperatures will continue to climb. do expect them to peak tomorrow before we begin that cooling trend and getting closer to the weekend here. stopping it for you out friday. notice that trough pattern just hanging right over the west? all the way down into southern california. and again, that's what will keep us seasonably mild temperatures for

tomorrow morning. a widespread 50s expected on the peninsula. 50 degrees to start your morning in redwood city. low 50s in concord. and then to the afternoon we go where we will be as much as ten degrees above average. santa rosa, you're looking at 86 livermore, 84 on the peninsula for tomorrow, 80 degrees in redwood city, a beautiful 70 degrees for the city of san francisco. and then we begin to see that cooling trend kick in on wednesday by the weekend, temperatures ranging from upper 50s to about 60 degrees at the coast, mid to upper 60s around the bay, and 70s for our inland cities. heather. >> okay, rosemary. thank you. i knew at 730 tonight we have an update on the growing peregrine falcon chicks right there on top of uc berkeley's campanile. the chicks have started to explore the world right outside the nest. the university posted this video to x of some of the chicks poking around and getting a feel for the area outside their home. they're growing so fast, so quickly you can actually start to see their baby fur starting to shed. university officials add that the campanile has some blind spots that their cameras

she's just giving her orders. they got people. >> university of san francisco student sue. sue state says the campus gave no notice before they started removing tents at a pro-palestinian encampment on monday morning. the students were already planning to leave, but she says that doesn't make it right. >> they once they came in, they just started breaking stuff down. no warning, no, no consent . no. like, hey, where's this? they just took everything down. they shoved the tent. they shoved everybody's personal belongings. >> the campus says most students had already left the camp, and that the majority of the 50 tents had been abandoned. the tents have been on campus since the end of april. protesters in line with the campus tagline, have been hoping to spearhead change, drawing attention to the plight of palestinians half a world away. and at usf, first year law student hannah beauchamp pope says the administration's actions is an affront to the private jesuit university, state admission. >> and i literally woke up from that tent this morning. all of

student workers at uc santa cruz walked off their jobs today and went on strike. >> they're protesting the uc system's recent crackdown on pro-palestinian demonstrators and college campuses across the state. the walkout involves teaching assistants, researchers and other academic workers. no word on how long the walkout will last. you see administrators say the students are in violation of a no strike clause in their contract. congresswoman anna eshoo hosted a reception today to honor this year's u.s. service academy appointees. the event took place this afternoon at moffett field in mountain view. every member of congress has the opportunity to nominate students living in their districts to the five service academies west point, naval, air force, coast guard, and the merchant marine academies. this year, representative su had a record 15 students to receive appointments to those academies as well. >> i have a lot of hope for the future of the country through the eyes of these kids, these young people, they're

lloyd green agar class. the class celebrated its accomplishments over the last year at the county fair building in golden gate park. the 11 graduates pictured worked almost 500 hours in six different parks to serve their communities. the green agar program is a youth stewardship and leadership program created by the san francisco rec and park department, alongside the port of san francisco. the program offers teenagers a chance to play a role in their communities. they are able to facilitate workshops, lead public volunteer service projects, and a lot more. congratulations to them! a new mural inside the san francisco fire department headquarters

honors the rich history and legacy of firefighters. the mural was unveiled today right there in the rotunda lobby of the fire headquarters by chief janine nicholson. it was hand-painted by academy of art university students, and it shows the department's landmark engine company number five fire house. there's also an actual vintage fire engine creating an illusion that is parked outside the old house. chief nicholson says the mural offers visitors a window into the fire department's historic past. >> this is where we do a lot of the work to keep the department moving forward and to have a piece of our history on the wall, not just these beautiful old pieces that we have here, but to have a piece of history like this on the wall is incredible. >> the artwork and other items on display are at fire department headquarters for the public to come and see during regular business hours when that lobby is open as well, it is time to put the spotlight on the

bay area's outstanding black culinary scene. we're in the middle of black restaurant week. this week is all about showcasing and supporting black owned eateries, food trucks, and catering businesses. and for more. earlier today on the four, we spoke with fallon farrell, a representative from black restaurant week. she says there's also they are also offering some of the businesses marketing and social media strategies designed to try to bring in more customers. >> a lot of small businesses really don't have the funds to really do their marketing on their own. and so with our campaign, we're able to take on those costs, showcase who they are to the community and really motivate the community to support local small businesses, which is so important, in these economic times. >> again, some of those participating restaurants also offering specials to get you to join in. by the way, black restaurant week started on friday. you still got a few more days left. it runs all the way this week through sunday, so don't forget to check it out. thanks so much for joining me
