[ cheers and applause ] >> bonjour, global citizen around the world. i'm here in canada with prime minister trudeau and he's been seeing all of the tweets, e-mails and calls you guys have been making to him and other world leaders. >> hello global citizen. because of you governments and businesses around the world pledged almost $13 billion to the global fund. this money is key to the fight guess aids, tur berk close and malar malaria. canada is proud to have pledged over $8 million over the next few years but that's only the start. to achieve the u.n. sustainable development goals we must do more. more action, more leadership, more smart invests, more innovative thinking and more commitment. let's not forget poverty is sexist. we know these epidemics disproportionately affect women

and girls and it's up to all of us to address the gender inequality that fuels them. lately my office is flooded with phone calms and tweets from all of you. thanks, rihanna. i've heard your voices from supporting eradication of polio to ensuring everything girl everywhere has the place to go to school. canada fought polio now 99.9% eliminated and we will be a strong partner through to the end. so thank you for keeping these issues on our global agenda. keep calling, keep tweeting, keep lighting up our switchboards. we're listening, and we're taking action. you've shown to the world that change starts with you, and together we will end it for good. >> good afternoon, everybody. i was raised in zimbabwe.

in the '80s and the '90s. i witnessed firsthand the ways hiv and aids hits communities, families, and the very fabric of life. southern and eastern africa have definitely in this particular area come a very long way. and johnson & johnson is one of the crucial global partners in that fight. they're support of the village in kenya where they provide action to anti-viral medicines, help build a clean water supply and support educational grants for health care careers means that children affected by hiv-aids are now able to craft their own future. a battle -- a battle that this village inspires us to remember --

republicans and everyone. the actions of everybody out there make as huge difference. that's why i aport food aid reform as well as international domestic child nutrition. we have an opportunity and really a responsibility. no child should go to bed hungry. we can find hunger and poverty in our own neighborhoods and around the globe. and global citizen provides that bridge so that everyone out there can do some good and prevent kids from going to bed hungry so they can live good lives. >> beautifully said. and also wondering is there bipartisan support? seems no a no-brainer we want want to get on the same page to feed children? >> without a doubt. extreme poverty knows no boundaries, political, geographic or otherwise. we may not agree on one thing but we agree wholeheartedly on this. like ma nernl newborn and child health and poolio eradication. on food, canada led the world

locally. saved taxpayer dollars and more kids are eating going to bed with full stomachs at night. critically important. issues championed in canada by conservative and liberal governments alike and we must be absolutely relentless and united in our commitment to them. >> absolutely. i notice you have your global citizen. prime minister trudeau had his. got to get senator schumer one. >> show me off. we won't do much good. >> we are here for a serious and pick up your phone to g7 leaders, lift 500 million people out of hunger and malnutrition. these issues no ed to be at the top of their agenda next year. you've heard from two influential leaders who say your letters, tweets, e-mails, your action make as difference. >> a huge difference. so get to work.

>> thank you. well, like that song says, there's too much distance between people's hearts and souls these days. when you have a difficult kid in the house, what do you do? do you lock him up? or do you try to understand his problems and help him through? the trouble that we see spreading around the world today in different countries and towns and different countries is basically not the fault of people's religion or their color. but it's because many of them, their identity has been stigmatized and trodden on. so they have become radicalized. hopefully these kinds of movements, global citizen will help, you know, to -- to make us a bit more sensitive to others, and to remember what it's like

the that are holding back girls and women in too many places around the world. and one of these laws is the 1971 law of marriage act in tanzania that allows girls as young as 14 to be married. >> no good. folks at home, we are asking you to tweet now and call upon the president of tanzania to amend the 1971 law of marriage act, and increase the minimum age of marriage to 18 for boys and girls. sounds very reasonable to me. >> yes. because every year 15 million girls under the age of 18 are forced to marry. these are child brides who are often made to leave their school and more likely to experience other things like domestic violence. these girls have been deprived of their childhood and their education. if we are to end extreme poverty in our lifetime, we need to give these girls the equal opportunity to learn and to grow and to love.

>> it is amazing to be here, and share this moment with you all. it is critical that countries deliver on their commitments so that we, the younger and future generations, inherit a world that we want to live in. a world where no one is left behind. no matter where they are from, no matter their citizenship status, their race, their gender, their religion, their economic status or their sexual identity and orientation. so i encourage all of you here today and watching at home to go out there and make your voices heard. tell your community and national leaders that we must, we absolutely have to, accomplish the sustainable development goals. demand it of them and demand it of yourself, because the stakes are too high for failure. our voices matter, and we've seen when we organize and take ownership, we can achieve anything. >> hello, new york!

it's great to be back with millions of global citizens, 70,000 in this park and millions all over the world! right now the world is spending more than $1.6 trillion on the military, on wars! and an amount that could ensure universal access to health coverage, to education, to water, to sanitation, to clean energy many times over. right here in the united states goufrt is thinking about wasting government is thinking about wasting a trillion dollars on new nuclear weapons. what are they thinking, ladies and gentlemen? we need to think and we need to act differently. we need clean water in flint, michigan. we need flood control in louisiana.

we need early childhood programs for kids all over this country. we need to tap this country's vast wind power in north dakota and its solar energy in arizona to clean the air and protect the climate. we need -- ha what do we need? we need to get the prices of medicine way down, because they're ripping us off, these drug companies! and we need that for university health coverage in this country. we are spending hundreds of billions of dollars too much. now, here's the great thing, friends. here is the great thing. there is no shortage of technology. there is no shortage of the people who want to do this work, who are committed to peace and to decency, and i'm looking at you, 70,000 wonderful people! yes! all over the world.
