11:00 am
is because the house had been briefed by intelligence officials about specific threats. the senate will get the briefing soon and i suspect you will see a change after the briefing. >> you've heard tik toc say it's parent company bytedance is not owned by the chinese government. again, make the connection between the chinese government and bytedance. >> the assertion is not that is owned by the chinese government. it is that is under the control of the chinese government. bytedance is accorded in china. there is no such thing as a private company in china. >> i am apologizing to you we have this news conference underway with breaking news. ng. underway with breaking news. i'm taking you there right now. let us listen and read after which he shot and killed his 52-year-old stepmother karen gordon and hisn 13-year-old sister, karen gordon. they lived at the residence.
11:01 am
there were three other individuals at the residence, including a minor. a they were able to hide and avoid being shot by gordon as he went through the house searching for them. following the shootings at approximately 9001 a.m. , gordon drove to the block of edgewood lane where he forcibly broke into a residence after which he shot and killed taylor daniel, with whom he has two children. all of the shooting he fled the scene. at the time of the shooting there were four other individuals present inside that home, one of which was injured after being bludgeoned by gordon with the assault rifle. she was transported to jefferson for her injuries. at approximately 9:13, gordon committed a carjacking at gunpoint of a 44-year-old man from mooresville at the parking lot of the dollar general on bristol pike. the operator of the vehicle did not suffer any injuries.
11:02 am
gordon is believed to currently be homeless and has ties to the trenton area. at approximately 11:38 a.m., the honda cr-v that was the car checking victim's vehicle was located and occupied in the 100 block of miller street in trenton you -- trenton, new jersey. at 12:22, received information that gordon is barricaded in new jersey with hostages. he is inside the residence on the 100 block of philip street and trenton. we are referring all information regarding that aspect of the investigation to the trenton police department. at approximately 12:25 piano we lifted our shelter in place. i will answer the questions that were answered and i will turn -- excuse me for one second. i will turn it over to chief whitney for a few additional remarks.
11:03 am
we have tremendous resources that have been devoted to investigating and preventing further criminal acts from this individual and then we will answer questions. >> good afternoon, everyone. this was an outstanding team mastered by the law-enforcement in bucks county but in addition to district attorney's office, we had assistance from the pennsylvania state police, the borough of alcohol and firearms and the federal bureau of investigation but we have help from all of our committees that sent representatives to a staging area while this incident was still dynamic and unfolding to investigate reports that were coming and and assist us in securing the three different crime scene we had here. my thanks to everyone who assisted us today. it was an outstanding team effort. >> [ inaudible question ] >> my apologies, schoron.
11:04 am
>> my name is nelson whitney . i am the chief of police for the township police department. >> [ inaudible question ] >> we've had minor contacts in the past but nothing that would indicate anything like this would happen. >> [ inaudible question ] >> it is the mother of the deceased the dumb. >> as she seriously injure? >> we do not believe the injuries are serious but there might be serious bodily injury but we expect she will recover. >> where were the children? >> the children were present when the shooting happened. >> [ inaudible question ] >> we cannot speak to that at this juncture. >> [ inaudible question ] >> yes. several of the family members at the first residence were
11:05 am
successful and able to hide from the shooter rated one of them is a minor, who is 14 years old. >> [ inaudible question ] >> there were three individuals in the residence who were in hiding. generally speaking, they were all family. >> [ inaudible question ] >> 13, excuse me. >> there were three other family members hiding in the first tom in the second home there were two other members. is that correct? >> and the first home there were three family members hiding in the other home there were other family members present. however, there was this deceased victim and her mother who was injured as a result of an assault and then minor children were present.
11:06 am
>> in speaking to the family members, do you know if there is any history of mental illness or outburst, anything that would indicate? >> nothing we can speak of at this juncture. >> how many weapons you believe that he had? >> we know he was armed with a long gun but he may be armed with other rapids, i don't have specific information on that. >> what type of long gun? >> my information he was armed with an ar 15 style assault rifle. >> do you know if you legally own it? >> this investigation is still pending we will investigate every aspect of how he came into possession of these weapons. >> i understand police were close by. was there any pursuit or interaction with him? >> there was no pursuit. >> [ inaudible question ]
11:07 am
specifics on the locations of the calls for service or nature at this time. i know qualitatively there was nothing that indicated that something would happen. >> [ inaudible question ] >> again, we will gather that information and report back with update. as it relates to this matter, it is ongoing and i think at this juncture, any future questions, we will certainly be providing more information as we receive it. >> is there criminal history? >> i cannot speak to that. >> is he confirmed to be in that residence and trenton? >> that has been confirmed. >> [ inaudible question ]
11:08 am
>> we understand he has ties to that home and believed to be family ties to that home. >> [ inaudible question ] >> i cannot speak to that. this is an ongoing situation. >> how long was the shelter in place, how many hours? >> approximately three hours. >> which towns or townships? >> we put that out for our committee here in paul's town. >> how did you get everyone off the parade route? >> we were in contact almost immediately with the organizers of the parade and let them know we needed to shut the parade down we also had officers go up and down the roadway and want people to go back to their homes. >> [ inaudible question ] >> i would say that we certainly appreciate that everyone took that seriously. it was a dynamic situation at first and we were not sure where
11:09 am
the actor was or where he was going to end up. out of caution we wanted to keep everyone safe i think the community did a great job in honoring that >> [ inaudible question ] >> we will provide that off the record. thank you, i appreciate your time >> thanks, everyone. >> we are covering two situations that what you are looking at right now is an active scene right there. that is the home that was referenced by the press conference by the district attorney in bucks county as well as the chief of police. you see police officials are on the roof of that house. they are trying to bring out any hostages that may be held there against their will as result of 26-year-old andre gordon, who is accused of
11:10 am
killing three people earlier. we will go through those that he killed. the first two were at a home. his 52-year-old stepmother along with his 13-year-old sister. and then he went to a second residence where he killed the 25-year-old mother of his two children and used an ar 15 style assault weapon to bludgeon a woman, the mother of his 25-year-old -- the mother of his two children. she is expected to recover from her injuries. let us go right now to george the lease. you are at the second location in trenton. what are you seeing there and how many people have you been able to count that has been brought out safely? is there any hostages still inside? >> reporter: i just got here a few minutes ago. the police presence is heavy. we are actually able to give you a good vantage point of the number of police from the neighboring jurisdiction. you have from high town, ewing
11:11 am
township, where the situation is ongoing. you also have a number of people that have come out of their homes to watch all of this unfold. we heard that press conference wrap up as you did right now. this is still an ongoing situation. a moment ago i was in touch with trenton pd who tells me they're currently investigating related to falls township there working right now with the fbi and state police and the township. to try and bring this to a peaceful resolution. you heard very briefly during that press conference that authority did mention they had some contact with this individual in the past but nothing that would escalate to what we are seeing unfolding right now. as far as what we can see, still very much ongoing and very fluid right now. we just got here a little bit ago. we are getting a sense of what is unfolding right now. things kind of at a standstill right now. very hard to get in and out of the neighborhood in trenton.
11:12 am
you can see the police tape and a police officer in the distance keeping the situation calm. they have not told us to move away from the scene or to seek cover from where we are right now. obviously, because this is such a fluid and ongoing situation that could change at any moment. we will continue to bring updates as they become available >> i'm curious about the part that you have not been warned to be safe. you know, according to the news conference that we listen to, that the 26-year-old suspect, andre gordon, has four weapons, at least, in his possession. one of them being an ar-15 style rifle and another being a long shotgun. you would think that they would say, folks, all you residents stay inside. have you heard any shots transpiring? i know you just got there but have you heard anything that indicates imminent danger?
11:13 am
>> reporter: not at this moment. we have not heard any kind of flash-bang or anything that would indicate there trying to coach the suspect out of the home. it seems that when you have a scene like this as soon as things get active, people would not be out on the street like this. they would be far away and move this perimeter farther back. it is telling to a sense that police may have a bit of a good grasp on what the situation is. we are still gathering information and there might be more happening behind the scenes as there usually is. in a moment we are seeing this heavy police presence and the situation sort of status quo. it is fluid and evolving. we see traffic moving across the street with police are getting people in and out of this neighborhood. as soon as any information becomes available, we will let you know if the situation changes. >> i know you well. i will ask you to stay there on the scene and keep your mic and camera hot. i bring into the conversation right now a rescue team and
11:14 am
former fbi supervisor, rob d'amico. i assume you have been listening to the news conference and my back and forth with george. give me your best guess to how all this unfold it and what you expect to happen next. >> let us go to right now. what are they doing right now? there is some movement out there that you normally don't see outside of barricaded situations especially with him in possession of a long gun, like an ar-15. they may have cornered him down in the basement and they understand he does not have any views out into the street. or it is they come on board and they have gotten in there. they may have heard one gunshot that indicated he has done something to himself and they're trying to safely look at getting robots in their or other nonhuman type things in there to confirm that. or it could be, he is penned into a corner of the house where he does not have access to windows.
11:15 am
they are setting up a perimeter to keep him in as tight as they can, if they know where he has. they're going to move every one out that they can print and do not let that number go out. it is a tactical number. he may have known how many people were in the house to begin with. if you tell to get out, it could give it away. they are working on that. you saw them on the roof and they're doing it in a safe and efficient manager. there is an emergency team getting ready with a s.w.a.t. team. they do not have a good plan but they are emergency assault part if something goes bad with a hostage and shooting starts they are the ones that came take the door down and go inside to rescue the hostage bird it is not the best situation. there is another team working on a deliberate assault that is getting blueprints of the area to start looking at doors and how to go in there should it happen. the other thing is happening is negotiating team. if they believe he is in there and i live, even if they think
11:16 am
he may be dead, negotiating teams are getting together and getting information from the other two scenes because it is important how they deal with them. sometimes they will have a victim's mother call in but with this being a domestic situation, you definitely don't want to do that. you do not understand the motives behind it. you do not want to bring someone in that that will pour gasoline on something that you are not sure about. if you look at the scenes, that tells you something too. he killed an older woman and his sister and those related to him. he was hunting the other ones, someone had set in that press conference. >> for anyone who is just joining us, let me remind folks of who we know is deceased at the hands of this 26-year-old, andre gordon. a 52-year-old woman, his stepmother and his 13-year-old sister at the first location. and then he went to the second location and he killed the 25-
11:17 am
year-old mother of his two children and assaulted with his ar-15 style rifle, her mother. she is expected to recover from her injuries. rob, i will have my director josh to wreak you video where we showed from the trenton house and the roof. there is somebody who got out of the house. there it is. thank you so much, josh. you see someone gingerly getting to a ladder, probably does not go out on the roof like this on a daily occasion that person could be pivotal, providing information with what is going on inside as were also watching another police officer go in on the second floor, rob. >> i'm not sure if that house is a duplex or if they have him pinned in a location with him having access to the other windows otherwise that would be a dangerous move you probably see more police affair with bulletproof blankets and such regarding that window that is
11:18 am
open. it tells me they kind of have a situation where they know where he is at in the house and he does not have movement up to those areas. not that that police officer is not there for an emergency but it says they have some axis. i do not understand -- i would have to look at the building to see if it is a duplex and they are getting out the other side but they are doing it right in front of the one on the right. it is kind of like, they know what is going on. they perceive that it is safe enough to do it this way without any other protections that you are seeing on the people. you can always put a bulletproof blanket and have that carrot in front of the civilian trying to get out. >> you know what robert -- i'm going to ask as possible for our control booth to drop that lower third banner just for a moment. we could get a better look -- thanks, guys -- look at the
11:19 am
front to see if this is a duplex side-by-side home or not. i cannot tell 100% for sure but it kind of looks like there are two separate front doors went at the left edge of your screen of that property, guys. and then another one that is centrally located. to your point, rob, it appears that somebody got out of the left -- if this is a duplex -- the left home and walked across to that ladder. >> that means maybe it is on the right side. he may be on the left side in the back. somehow, they have pinned him down that location or in the basement or something. or, like i said, something may have happened in the house. he has some attachment to it and they talk about that being some type of family connection.
11:20 am
he may have gone somewhere, they heard a gunshot and no movement out of that room. they brought police officers in and barricaded that until they can figure out. we have drones that we can fly in the house to take a look before you send a human in and maybe even a dog after the drone or the robot. it tells me they kind of have a location for him. if they heard a gunshot with no movement so far, they are getting everyone out until they can get there as safe as they can and start inquiry if he is alive. >> my executive producer has set in my ear based on at least three if not four people getting out. we sell one person being taken away a little earlier been this video. that person, civilian clothing was being ushered away by someone in law enforcement. we see a second person climbing down the ladder. at least two we could get on tape.
11:21 am
how long will something like this take to resolve itself if the suspect has indeed killed himself and is holed up somewhere? >> the key is safety of others. if he was in that room with somebody else and we think that makes it a hostage situation, it will slow down anyhow. if it is known that he was in a room or basement and everyone is accounted for and send no one else was in there, it will slow down. you don't have to go fast. you will get communication in there to talk to him if you can. if you get a phone down there and say he did something to himself and there is no answer, you still want to start sending unmanned assets in there. they have all things you can get with cameras and drones you can fly in the house and you can look. i remember a hutch the situation that hrt was at. the perp and -- person did a
11:22 am
single gun fire and thought he was dead. they have seen some things before. they have breached some mars whole -- large holes and they figured out he was still alive and he was waiting for police to think he was dead to come in so he could ambush them. there is all kinds of things you have to start looking at and you just want to keep being safe. if we believe there is no hostages, nothing has to go fast. >> rob, i'm going to ask you to stay right where you are. we will gather more details and take a 62nd break. we'll be right back and update you on what is happening in trenton, new jersey, after the killing of three people in the neighboring falls township in pennsylvania. stay with us.

11:24 am
up. there were some hostages that we have seen at least two by our video that we can show you, two people have gotten out of their house where he was holed up there may be other hostages. we believe others were let out before the two that you can see on this video. andre gordon, 26 years old. he is accused and about the 9:00 a.m. eastern our of killing three people in two separate locations. first of all, a house he was familiar with, 52-year-old stepmother and a 13-year-old sister. this is according to a news conference conducted by the bucks county district attorney and chief of police just a short while ago that we saw live. he then went to a second house location, where he killed, according to police, the 25- year-old mother of two of his children and also used his ar- 15 file assault rifle tube
11:25 am
bludgeon, as they said, her mother. she has been taken to the house at all and is expected to recover. there was a third incident in falls township and that was the side of the carjacking, a gray honda was carjacked. the person who was taken out of the car he was driving at the time was not injured. that person was able to provide the description of a car, the license plate. there you see it on route from where it was stolen and on its way to trenton, new jersey. we have been following this closely. i am joined by former fbi supervisor rob d'amico, who it was a member of a rescue hostage team. rob, the is plan another scenario and that would be that he has not committed suicide and they are not going into that home to see if they might find him, having heard a gunshot. what if he is there holed up with someone, despite some people getting out safely? >> the negotiator will try to
11:26 am
talk to them. they will look at the pieces. there is clues in it that he has killed and he is left some people alive. it is not a mass killing, he let the driver go without injuring him. he was hunting. there is something domestic about this, the relatives it is important to know who's has to -- whose house is at. they are interviewing everyone they can to see if he said something during the incident because they have witnesses that are talking to him. all that information is going over to the negotiation team. they have one person on the team who is trying to talk to him and a bunch of other team members who are gathering notes and writing notes on a board so that if he does answer the phone and they engage in conversation, all the information is going to the person talking to him. they will just try to talk to him and use all the things that negotiators do. the best way this can end is
11:27 am
talking to the point where he gives up he gives up if he has a hostage or does not have a hostages, it is still the safest way to end this incident and though it can take a while. if there is a hostage, you have to be careful on your safety so they will put the emergency assault team together. if the negotiator starts hearing him go down a desperate road, where he may do something and they have a good plan to get in there quickly and resolve it, they may call the emergency hostage rescue. you saw that with the boy in the bunker with hrt in alabama. they thought the subject was going down stream where he would hurt the young child. all of those things are going on now. they are making sure everyone is safe depending on where they are at and where they think he has access to a window. they either have snipers covering the window so if you came up with the weapon and presented, they could have someone on the outside where a
11:28 am
sniper can have the green light if a hostage is in the and brett or a clear shot even if the hostage is there. even if he presents deadly force. all those things are happening right now as they are trying to do -- there is a bunch of different team, negotiation team, tactical team, investigators in general are putting into this command post. >> i have a few more questions that given the nature of this news coverage, we will take another quick short commercial break. and come back with more of what is happening in trenton, new jersey put on the street showing you live right now. we will be right back.

11:32 am
okay, everyone. we are following a very dangerous drama that has unfolded and you're looking at the 100 block of miller street in trenton, new jersey. it is where we believe 26-year- old andre gordon has holed up
11:33 am
inside a home that is known to him. and it is after he is accused of killing three people will, about 25 minutes away in neighboring falls township, in bucks county, pennsylvania. the three people who he killed were targeted in two different locations. the first was a home and which he killed the 52-year-old stepmother of him and also his 13-year-old sister. and then he went to a second home where he killed the 25-year-old mother of his two children and use his assault style weapon, ar-15 style weapon to bludgeon her mother. we got this information from the district attorney and the chief of police in bucks county, who conducted a news conference about 35 minutes ago. let us go right now to george soley's. he is just there in the neighboring area on top of a roof. it is adjacent to the street in
11:34 am
trenton, new jersey. what do you know? >> reporter: within the last few minutes trenton before going into that home. i saw police deploy a drone right over the home. you might be able to see it hovering above right now. since we have been here, we have heard no audible signs of gunfire or flash-bangs or anything that indicates they have made any real loud presence to get into this home. we are hearing they have entered this home, whether or not they have found the suspect that or alive. it remains to be seen. whether other hostages remains to be seen. something i pointed out earlier, it remains the case is that you have a number of people that are gathered here out side of the police perimeter and watching, recording videos and talking amongst themselves and what you see right now are police from neighboring jurisdictions moving traffic among the area. they are not letting people through the perimeter. you are not seeing them telling people to go back inside homes or shelter in place as we did
11:35 am
in neighboring falls township when this unfolded but we're not sure what that indicates whether or not they know something they are not telling the public at this moment or they consider him to be an active threat remains to be seen. we do know that heavy police presence concentrated down the road and we are hearing that s.w.a.t. is entering the home and there is a drone in the air hovering above at this moment. we are seeing more police arriving from differing townships all in new jersey. we know the fbi and atf investigating as they usually do with instances like this. a lot of people, curious to see what the connection is that this individual has to this home. as you heard in the press conference, this is an area known to him and they were covered the stolen vehicle where the individual was not hurt. obviously, there is a lot of talk in this neighborhood about the loss of life is very tragic when you talk about children that were involved children inside the home. we are very much monitoring the
11:36 am
situation from a safe distance. we will listen to police if they give us any indication that this changes from a somewhat calm seen two very active and we need to seek shelter. >> 100%. george, i will ask you to stand by and stay hot but you have brought up good questions. of which i will pose right now to rob d'amico, a former fbi supervisor and hostage team recce -- member. there are a lot of people around there and they are watching and not being told to shelter in place as they had been in falls township in the wake of the three killings there. does that tell you s.w.a.t. thinks that they may have him either cornered or he may be deceased? you brought up s.w.a.t. members going into that home , they would not do that unless they were certain it was safe to do so. is that correct? >> it is to a point.
11:37 am
if they believe he went down to the basement and has not come out, they can move s.w.a.t. members into the house to a point where they feel it is a even if they think they can shoot up through the floor. they are moving into a position where they can feel safe. they are not going loud. you go quiet and tell you have to go loud if you're trying to get into position and have him not know. it definitely means that they understand where he is in the house, be it alive or dead. they are going into an area that they probably are looking at a safeway. if he was in the basement, you probably still would not walk above it with him having a long gun, like an ar-15, because it can shoot through the floor. it tells me that his location is fairly well known and for some reason they believe it is safe. i can look at a couple times that we have been on the news
11:38 am
here, looking at how officers are standing. when a shooter is active and they do not know when he will come back, they are behind a car and their guns are drawn. when they know something's happened that he may not be a threat, based have their bulletproof vests on and still behind beagles but they are not crouched down and the weapons are not point in the direction of where the threat might be. that is what is telling me they are allowing people on the outside to walk around, even though it may not be right in front of the house. an ar-15 has a long range. the have access to windows, they could get out that is telling me something about where they think he is in the house and what his status maybe. >> rob, i'm going to ask our viewers to focus on the corner of the screen that is directly above the two of us right now. where we see one person specifically but we see someone just now being led away who had been taken out of the house you
11:39 am
and i are trying to figure out if this is a single residence dwelling or a side-by-side duplex it is curious to me that these two people were presumably taken out above left side of the house looking at the screen -- there you go. s.w.a.t. is going in on that side . is it possible that those people being taken out are being taken out for their own safety but they are not involved with what is happening on the other side of a partition wall? they would not necessarily know where andre gordon is in the right side duplex ? >> i actually believe he may be in the left side only because if they thought he was in the right side, why would they put the ladders up on the left side and take them down the ladder or not going in front of the house management hello? >> that is a good point.
11:40 am
can you still hear me? we are getting a little bit of static. rob makes a good point that we talked about earlier that when you saw the one person prominently crossing from the left side of the screen to the right, if they thought that andre gordon was there in that house and have those kinds of guns, that he could do some damage to anyone trying to get in front of one of those windows. we will take a short break and get rob d'amico's audio backup. we have george solis on the scene as well. you are watching msnbc and this breaking news . ou're e racking.. ...or crab cracking, you're cashbacking. cashback on flapjacks, baby backs, or tacos at the taco shack. nah, i'm working on my six pack. switch to a king suite- or book a silent retreat. silent retreat? hold up - yeeerp? i can't talk right now, i'm at a silent retreat. cashback on everything you buy with chase freedom unlimited with no annual fee. how do you cashback? chase. make more of what's yours.

welcome back at 44 past the hour. for the better part of an hour we have been watching what is unfolding in trenton, new jersey, near the 100 block of miller street. the 26-year-old andre gordon is believed to be holed up with hostages, though the hope is those hostages inside have been taken out safely from s.w.a.t. members that are there with a huge presence on the scene. andre gordon is accused of killing three people earlier this morning in the 9:00 a.m. hour. this happened in falls township, part of bucks county, pennsylvania, about a 25 minute drive from where we are looking right now on the screen. the three people he has alleged to have killed, 52-year-old stepmother, a 13-year-old sister in the first location and then
11:46 am
went to a second half -- house where he killed the 25-year-old mother of his two children and used his ar-15 assault weapon he had on hand to bludgeon her mother. she has been taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. let us go right now to george solis is on a rooftop just down the road from where this is all taking place with a birds eye view of everything. tell me what you are seeing now or if you have heard anything and talk about the presence of neighbors, people that have just come out out of curiosity and are pretty close to the scene, george. they are watching this unfold. >> reporter: it is a very tense situation out here. what you see is a lot of police activity. ec the neighboring jurisdictions with ewing township, you can see some other jurisdictions i cannot quite make out but it tells you how fast this perimeter is that they set around this home where the situation is ongoing. police at the helm right now. the s.w.a.t. going into the home , whether
11:47 am
or not they have found the suspect or any other hostages remains to be seen. we are monitoring that situation. one thing, we are seeing quite a number of people from the community out here on the street around the police tape and around the neighborhood. you are not seeing police telling them to go back inside their homes and shelter in place as we saw early this morning in falls township when the shooting was first reported. you heard people beings told to stay put and not come out. they canceled some st. paddy's day parade. that might be something that police know out here that they have not relate to the public. as far as we can see, police staging out there and we can see them hang around the home, alex. that is the scene at the moment. >> i appreciate you telling us that. we will move right now to rob d'amico. i expect to be with you shortly. rob d'amico joining us again for all of you just tuning in, rob is a former f vi supervisor

as well as the fbi hostage rescue team. put into good use your experience as a hostage rescue negotiator right now. what is the likelihood based on the cumulative visuals that we have had, the reporting we have had over the last 45 minutes that you think is possible if not likely there is still a hostage inside that home. >> you are never going to assume a case that would be the worst. assuming there is not a hostage and he is not a lie. the negotiators they got the location where they think he is that even if they think he is deceased and so they have proved that they are trying to talk through to talk them and pick up the phone and we want to talk. they will keep doing that until the technical guys they they're going to make the entry and
11:49 am
they will do it by unmanned means with robot drones, the balls that you can go in with cameras and all those things but if they get a camera on him and they will look for even if he is laying down her chest movement because we've had people fake their own death in order to get cops in there with ambushing them. but negotiators will never get up they are going to keep trying. i have seen them do that for a long time until it was determined that the subject was deceased. if they assume that if you got to be different, that is not good but tactical guys are as tight as they can be with whatever location. making their position as safe if they are putting up bulletproof blankets in order to put themselves away. just in case he is making his own death. when they finally go into do it, depending on the intel they

may have on him or something, always looking for -traps. we found that overseas, even though he is not coming from a terrorist, there is a way to turn over a dead body to make sure there is nothing under that will hurt you too. there is all kinds of things going on and planning for each scenario, each branch is down the tree and when they get to the decision point, they will take one of those branches. >> rob, we will take another break. a question i want to ask on the other side is the safety of the s.w.a.t. officers that we saw timing into that house and the concerns that you have because we know the suspect was armed again with an assaultive style weapon. what that presents to the s.w.a.t. officers who need to take care of themselves in terms of safety, i will ask about what they are doing on that front. we will be right back here with breaking news on msnbc.

11:57 am
there is all kinds of danger areas when you enter a house and do things. normally if it is a slow and deliberate search and there is no hostages, there is different ways of nearing dangers and crossing them if there is a hostage involved or an innocent person you're trying to bring out of that, you bypass dangers and you have the gear and equipment, not that it is all life-saving but you have that and you're trying to get someone that is an innocent victim of the situation. that is what the job entails and that you sign up for. they sent it to be police officers and then s.w.a.t. teams so they know what they are doing and they understand it. when you are dealing with an ar- 15 type rifle, normal body armor does not protect against it. it is too small and travels too fast and goes right through kevlar. since the iraq war, when we deal with rifles, they started making what we call chicken plates. they make plates that can top
