9:01 pm
you are watching sky news. the breaking news of this morning, iran has launched more than 200 rounds as well as missiles to attack israel. israel's defense forces, the vast majority of the missiles fired by iran were intercepted by israel and its allies outside of israeli territory. president joe biden and prime minister rishi sunak have condemned the attack and the strongest terms. our correspondent song table interceptions over the city as air raid siren sounded. the ministry of defense is confirmed that raf jets have been involved in the defense of israel. and, israel released this image showing the israeli prime minister on the phone to u.s. president joe biden. the u.s. said it has an ironclad commitment to israel's security. israel's army spokesman, we
9:02 pm
are admiral daniel hagari says the few missiles that have landed have caused minor damage. >> tonight, iran launched a large-scale coordinated attack on israel. the regime in iran fired a massive swarm, over 200 killer drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles toward the state of israel. together with our allies and partners across the region, we are operating at this very moment to defend israel from iran's attack. so far, we have intercepted a vast majority of incoming missiles by israeli systems. so far, we have intercepted and are continuing to intercept dozens of attacks rounds as well as cruise missiles and ballistic missiles outside of israel's border. a number of iranian missiles fell inside israeli territory, causing minor damage to a
9:03 pm
military base with no casualties. only one little girl has been hurt and we hope she will be well. >> our international correspondent, alex rossi, has the latest from jerusalem. >> reporter: we started to hear jets, and across the skies and the israeli military were predicting at about 2:00, the drones, this phalanx of drones that had been launched from iran toward israel would start to come into israeli airspace. we saw interceptions, flashes of light arcing above us as we assume those drones were taken out of the sky. missiles have been launched as well. that was accompanied by the sound of sirens wailing across the city of jerusalem. this is something that was replicated across israel as
9:04 pm
well. we are hearing from the iranian u.n. mission that their military action, they say, has now been concluded. prime minister benjamin netanyahu is at the israeli defense headquarters holding a war cabinet. israeli officials are saying there will be a serious response to what this unprecedented attack from the iranians. this may not be the end of it. it may be that we see some sort of response from them israelis that triggers a chain reaction, a cycle of escalation. but, again, they may show restraint. we don't know at this point what exactly their response will be. this is an enormously dangerous moment for the middle east. people across israel have been warned to stay very close to shelters. many people, of course, will have gone into those shelters tonight hearing the sirens in their towns and cities. educational activities have
9:05 pm
been canceled for schoolchildren in the days ahead because the fear is there may be another attack from the iranians, even though they say it has concluded. the retaliation from the iranians is, of course, from an airstrike attributed to israel happening on april the first, which hit a consulate in damascus, killing a number of senior generals from the iranian revolutionary guard. iran has been vowing a response to that and tonight, we saw that response. israel has been on tender hooks for the last 48 hours. there have been warnings from the united states security agencies that an attack was imminent and, tonight, we saw the shape and form of that attack. >> alex, so far, certainly, it does seem as those air defenses have kicked in and they have worked. no reports of any casualties so
9:06 pm
far. the language between iran and israel remains heightened. no signs of a de-escalation so far between the two. >> no, there is no direct communication between the iranians and the israelis. it is all done through back channels. there is a best scenario where this attack happened, iran can show to its domestic audience, project across the region that it responded to what it sees as a really great attack, the attack on the consulate, and this may be the end of it. what we are hearing from the israeli officials, it doesn't sound like that. it says that there will be a serious response. this, remember, is an unprecedented attack on israeli soil. they may very well feel for reasons of their own determines that they need to react for it. it will be very interesting to see what the united states or
9:07 pm
to hear what the united states is saying privately to israeli officials. of course, they don't want this to erupt into a major regional confrontation. that is the real danger here that this expense into a regional war and drags in multiple countries. we are hearing from the egyptians. they are calling for restraint on all sides. but, you know, this is a very destabilizing moment in the middle east, and at a time, of course, after the october the seventh attacks. there is a war raging in gaza. israel is vowing to destroy hamas, rescue its hostages, it hasn't finished doing that. that is still going on. again, that is extremely volatile. then on the northern border with israel, hezbollah from lebanon, there are daily exchanges of fire their. that in itself is enough to ignite under ordinary circumstances, to ignite a regional war and there is no sign of any end to that either.
9:08 pm
tonight, we know that hezbollah fired a number of, a right of missiles into israel. again, that is inflaming the general situation, make no mistake, this is an extra ordinarily dangerous moment. >> israel's allies have been at the forefront tonight and shooting down some of those drones. both the u.s. and the uk saying they were involved in shooting down some drones before they could make it to israeli territory. how much of an influence does the biden administration have over benjamin netanyahu here and how much can those behind the scenes conversations help to de-escalate the situation? >> let's start with the plans this evening. we heard warplanes overhead. according to the idf, tens of fighter jets have been up in the skies. they have been heading outside israeli airspace. we saw them fly over our heads in the direction of jordan
9:09 pm
earlier on this evening. they have been tasked with defending the nation, trying to take these drones out before they reached israeli soil. according to the idf, they have been coordinating their response with u.s. central command, as have the british. british fighter jets have been up in the air and they have taken out some of the drones, as have u.s. fighter jets. the level of leverage or influence that the americans will have on the israelis is hard to say. certainly, the relationship between the two countries has been frayed as a result of the very high civilian casualties in gaza. the americans have urged the israelis, particularly president biden, to show restraint. he has gone on the record and said a number of times that he doesn't think the war is being conducted in a proper way because of the mounting civilian casualties.
9:10 pm
he has also warned them of going into the southern part of the strip, rafah, one of the last refuges where hamas are holed up. the relationship is a very difficult one. one thing to say. because of the americans and also the british have come to the defense of israel tonight, that might have some bearing on what they do in terms of their response. that might give them some leverage. but, again, i will take you back to what i was saying earlier, this is communal, it is an unprecedented attack on israel and the chance, the miscalculation, the chance of further escalation are really great. >> alex rossi reporting from jerusalem. in the last couple of hours, u.s. president joe biden released a statement saying "earlier today, iran and
9:11 pm
its proxies operating out of yemen, syria, and iraq, launched an unprecedented air attack against military facilities in israel. i condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms. i have just spoken to brett minister benjamin netanyahu to reaffirm america's ironclad commitment to the security of israel. tomorrow, i will convene my fellow g7 leaders to coordinate a united diplomatic response to iran's brazen attack." that statement came shortly after israel released this image showing the israeli prime minister on the phone to u.s. president joe biden. our u.s. correspondent, james matthews, has the latest now from washington. >> the un security council is due to meet at 4:00 p.m. on sunday. this in response clearly events, the israelis are calling for a un security council resolution to condemn the actions of iran. it has been a busy day in washington. president biden ended his
9:12 pm
weekend break in his beach house in delaware to attend a meeting of the national security council in the situation room at the white house, america's war cabinet, essentially. this didn't take the united states by surprise. intelligence has shown that iran was preparing an attack. indeed, there was a briefing last week for congress, members of congress, who were briefed on what america saw as the threat and the iranian plans. there has been a telephone call between president biden and the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. their first conversation since these events started. america very much involved politically, clearly. president biden talking about the ironclad u.s. support for israel's security at this stage. but, militarily also, it has been involved with u.s. military
9:13 pm
assets in the region, taking down some of those iranian drones and missiles. the uss kearney had been on its way home having engaged rebels in yemen firing missiles. it was on his way home but was turned back to help israel in its hour of need. it will take until the morning, one imagines, to assess the damage and for the politicians to assess their next move, to gauge the extent of the damage and the extent of this iranian assault. i can tell you that the iranian mission at the united nations, it has treated on the social media platform x and for all intents and purposes, it appears to think that this is over. i will redo some of what
9:14 pm
they have posted. "iran's military action was in response to the zionist regime's aggression against our genetic, since in damascus. the matter can be deemed concluded." that is the view of the iranian mission at the united nations. clearly that may not be the view of the united states and israel. israel talking about the prospect of significant action. there is concern, according to u.s. officials that we speak to that israel could do something quickly in response to iran's attack that america wouldn't see necessarily as appropriate and america that doesn't want an escalation in this conflict and it wouldn't be the first time that israel had discarded the entreaties of the united states in acting as it has offered but not necessarily as
9:15 pm
of the united states and president biden saw fit. that, according to officials we speak to here in the united states, is a concern. earlier, sky news barbara sarah spoke to the founder of the arab-american institute about the significance of this escalation. >> there have been regular israeli attacks on not just the diplomatic site that was recently hit but on other sites in cerium where iranians have been and iranians have been killed and there have also been these rather frequent wink and nod assassination or bombing attacks on sites inside iran by mossad and iran has not responded correctly. this is the first time they actually do respond . from their perspective, they feel this ought to be the end of it. it is not going to be the end of it. a significant israeli response would produce a significant response back.
9:16 pm
it would just accelerate the cycle of violence and create god knows what in terms of devastation across the region. what needs to happen is there need to be adults in the room and that the u.s. could be an adult, which would been to pull folks apart, create an architecture for diplomacy that creates a security framework that taps this down. instead, we have decided to be a code holder and cheerleader for one side. apparently the uk is being an alternate code holder and cheerleader by joining in the fray. this is not what needs to happen. israel has behaved recklessly. it has behaved dangerously. iran has also behaved recklessly and dangerously. we do not need to be pouring gasoline on this fire, which is apparently what we are doing. i think that is a huge mistake. >> obviously both israel and iran would say the other party is responsible for escalating it. israel is obviously still
9:17 pm
traumatized is probably the right word to use over the october 7th attacks, which were, shook the country to its core. you mentioned grown-ups in the room. do you have any hope that the u.s. is trying to possibly rein in the israeli response? that would be your help and if so, do you think they have the ability and the influence to do so? >> they do have the ability and influence, no doubt. reagan did it, eisenhower did it, george herbert walker bush did it. this administration has been loath to use that influence. they have made comments about we wish you would do this, we wish you wouldn't do that but with nothing to back it up. benjamin netanyahu gets the clear message that he can do whatever he wants to do and there is not going to be any
9:18 pm
sanctions. we are seeing a growing movement among democrats, including rather significant members of congress who are democrats in the senate, including "the new york times," tomorrow that will have an editorial saying there should be conditions on aid to israel. we shouldn't be sending them anymore munitions. now, will that calculus change after this? i don't know. but, you know, there has been a genocide unfolding in gaza. let's not forget. that has been also a very traumatizing event across not just the arab world but the broader middle east region and frankly what we don't need, as i said, is to be pouring gasoline on this fire. will the biden administration to it they have shown no indication of wanting to tamp things down. that is disturbing. there is no other party that can do it but us. we have not shown the will to do it and the result is that israel operates with a sense of impunity and i compare them to the spoiled child. they know they are never going to get punished for what they do so why not just do whatever you want to do ?
9:19 pm
just going to take you straight to daniel hagari, the idf spokesperson is making a statement now. let's listen in. >> translator: the israeli air force fighter jets, our defense systems and the defense systems and aircraft of our partners. out of over 30 chris cruz missiles launched by, zero managed to get into israel. 25 of them were intercepted by israeli air force fighter jets outside of israeli borders. more than 120 ballistic missiles, only a few managed to enter israel. all the rest were intercepted. they felt in the israeli air force base and caused slight damage to infrastructure alone. as you can now see, the base is functioning and it continues to carry out its missions. here you can see the landing strip. iran thought it would managed to paralyze this air force base
9:20 pm
and damaged our air capabilities but it failed to do so. israeli air force aircraft continue to land and take off from the base and various missions of both the defense and attack, among them the f-35 aircraft that are participating in the defense mission of the airbase. in addition to the lodges from iran, there were some other launches from iraq and yemen and none of them managed to land in israel. in the recent hours, dozens of rockets were launched from lebanon toward the north of israel. there are no casualties or fatalities and the israeli air force aircraft managed to target different targets in lebanon while other crafts are continuing their air defense missions. in the past six months, we have been operating in" collaboration with our partners, first and foremost,
9:21 pm
the u.s. army sat, as well as britain, france, and other countries, which have taken action tonight. this partnership has always been very close and strong one but this night, it was manifest in an exceptional manner. this was a complex airfreight defense and there was exceptional functioning of the air force amended by the chief of general staff. the defensive capabilities of our air defense system and of the israeli air force aircraft managed to show military and technological supremacy of the idf. thanks to all this, the iranian attack, as it was planned, was intercepted and thwarted. regretfully, a 10-year-old girl was severely damaged from shrapnel. we send her our wishes of quick recovery. except for her, as far as we know, there haven't been any
9:22 pm
other casualties. yet, this event is not over yet. we are prepared for any further developments and scenarios. the instructions of the home front command continue to remain in place and that means no educational activities can be held. if there are any changes in instructions, we will update you immediately with transparency and responsibility, just as we did over this past night. we will continue to do the exemplary behavior in israeli home front was impeccable and we need to continue to operate without any panic and with responsibility. we will do everything we can for the israeli population to receive information in the quickest and most relevant possible manner. throughout the night, we conducted a situational assessment in the idf in line with the development of the chief of general staff presented plans to the government. iran did something very serious, very severe this night
9:23 pm
as it pushed the middle east toward escalation. we will do whatever is necessary in order to defend the citizens of the state of israel. alongside this nights development, we do not forget for one minute the 133 hostages who are being held captive in gaza and we will continue to do everything in our power in order to bring them back home as soon as possible. questions? >> translator: good morning, i ran managed this night to get israel into a mode of anxiety and to go into shelters, does that mean that there attacks succeeded ? >> first four i think that we are a strong country and throughout the state, we were in full control, showing full transparency to israeli civilians once we issued the instructions to the home front command and in all of our reports throughout this night, we tried to see that israeli
9:24 pm
citizens understand what is going to happen, are receiving the right instructions, and i think that the result speaks for itself. i ran launched over 399% of them were intercepted. that is a success. this is operational and technological supremacy, which is unprecedented. alongside that, this situation is still unfolding. it has not ended yet. there are aircraft patrolling the skies. we are monitoring all the threats and all our borders, we are preparing plans for the future, we are discussing alternatives and we will do whatever is necessary in order to protect the citizens of israel. we are going to continue and observe the air force base, it is functioning, it is operational. the aircraft are returning from their defensive missions to the base. we will continue to do the same in all of the idf bases. the
9:25 pm
idf is in full capacity tonight and throughout the day. thank you very much and have a good day. >> that was the idf spokesperson there, daniel hagari , and was providing an update following a difficult night in israel. he said we were in full control throughout the night, that there were more than 300 projectiles fired by iran overnight and 99% of them were intercepted. there was a slight damage to a structure, he said but iran failed to damage israel's military facilities, that there were no fatalities. he did mention a 10-year-old girl who had been injured by shrapnel but no other injuries. he went on to say that whatever is needed to defend the citizens of israel, that they will do it. also mentioned the

hostages who remained being held in gaza, to bring them back. the latest there from the idf from daniel hagari. to stay with us here on sky news. we will bring you the very latest on this continuing story, the breaking news that iran has launched more than 200 rounds as well as missiles to attack israel. attack israel. -ugh. -here, i'll take that. woo hoo! ensure max protein, 30 grams protein, 1 gram sugar, 25 vitamins and minerals. and a new fiber blend with a prebiotic. the latest from jerusalem. >> we started to hear jets coming across the skies and the israeli military were predicting at about 2:00, the drones, this phalanx of drones that had been launched from iran toward israel would start to come into israeli airspace and we saw interceptions, flashes of light working above us as we estimate the drones were taken out of the sky. missiles have been launched as well. that was accompanied by the sound of sirens wailing across

fighter jets have been up in the skies. they have been heading outside israeli airspace. we saw them fly over our heads in the direction of jordan earlier on this evening. they have been tasked with defending the nation, trying to take these drones out before they reached israeli soil. according to the idf, they have been coordinating their response with u.s. central command, as have the british. british fighter jets have been up in the air and they have taken out some of the drones, as have u.s. fighter jets. the level of leverage or influence that the americans will have on the israelis, it's really hard to say. certainly, the relationship between the two countries has been freed as a result of the very high civilian casualties in gaza. the americans have urged the israelis, president biden, to show restraint. he has gone on the record and
9:36 pm
said a number of times that he doesn't think the war is being conducted in a proper way because of the mounting civilian casualties. he has also warned them of going into rafah in the southern part of the strip, which is one of the last refuges where hamas are hold up. the relationship is a very difficult one. one thing to say, because the americans and also the british have come to the defense of israel tonight, that might have some bearing on what they do in terms of their response. that might give them some leverage. but, again, i take you back to what i was saying earlier, this is communal, it is an unprecedented attack on israel and the chance of miscalculation, the chance of further escalation are really great. >> earlier, my colleague, barbara sarah, spoke to our
9:37 pm
military analyst, sean bell, who explained what israel's air defense system is facing. >> one of the things to remember about the drones, while they are a bit more of a terror weapon, most of them are relatively easy to shoot down. the iranian drones have been provided to russia, the flight around 140 miles per hour. they are not that difficult to shoot down. the value of them is that they create a volume a constant weapon flying through the air. that provides cover for the cruise missiles, ballistic missiles that are also incoming. the air defenses that israel has and that the u.s. helped provide, should mitigate some of that. inevitably, these ballistic missiles, particularly difficult to get through. i think at some of the correspondence have been talking about, some of the key here will be just how much damage has been done? i ran, there's a lot of questions here. iran has and put on the horns
9:38 pm
of a dilemma. after israel attacked the consulate building on the first of april, killing 13 people, including a senior military commander, iran was almost duty- bound to do some sort of reaction. israel would have known that. the fact is, we can sometime to before doing it and it's general experience shows it is quite measured, it will be interesting to see what they have targeted, how many telephone warnings, in. we are hearing some of that but there has been some coordination between america and iran and if there has been coordination, iran will be trying to make a point but they very clearly do not want to escalate. one of the things most military analysts see here is iran has a fledgling nuclear program. it will not want to have that program attacked. it will not want to provide an excuse to the israelis or the americans for attacking those programs because ultimately, it
9:39 pm
is not if, it is when iran gets nuclear weapons. they would be the ultimate deterrent against both israel and the u.s. i think there's clearly a lot going on behind the scenes here. the key will be asked to how many of these muscles get through, what they are actually targeting, whether there were warnings being advised first and then how much america tries to mitigate and measure israel's natural instinct to respond. >> tensions between israel and iran go back decades. we have seen everything get more intense, more fragile since the latest escalation in the conflict between hamas and israel in gaza. militarily speaking, what is israel's situation right now in the sense that it is still involved in a military operation in gaza and now is having quite serious attacks coming in from other parts of the border? >> it is interesting trying to look at the sequence of this. from a military perspective, israel had its foot on the throat of hamas outside rafah.
9:40 pm
they have, and benjamin netanyahu has been clear he wants to deal with the last battalions of hamas fighters left in rafah. he has moved his battalions out and left simply one battalion left behind. there are also questions why that was happening. was it a breather? there are bodies of the israeli government who want to, they want to deal with hamas but they also want to deal with as blunt. of course, the dark shadow of iran has been around. they provide weapons, training, support to not only hamas, hezbollah and also the rebels in the red sea as well. that must all be incredibly frustrating for israel. the challenge, of course, is what do you do about it? i think one of the things that the security guys were particularly concerned about was if israel did respond to how they would go at hezbollah in the north. the last time that happened, lebanon suffered tremendously
9:41 pm
and there was a sort of stalemate at the end of it. lots of people died, lots of carnage. it looks likely despite the fact israel is a dominant military power in the region, it still would be probably folly to get to escalate. that is why we are seeing the u.s. try to bring its influence to bear to try to moderate. it is the ultimate security guarantor for israel but it is not in the interest of the u.s. to see this conflict escalate either. it will be interesting to see in the coming hours just how much statesmanship is involved to try to mitigate this very dangerous situation. >> our u.s. correspondent, james matthews, sent us the latest from washington. >> reporter: the un security council is due to meet at 4:00 p.m. on sunday. this in response clearly to events. the israelis are also calling for a un security council
9:42 pm
resolution to condemn the actions of iran. it has been a busy day in washington. president biden and it is weekend break in his beach house in delaware to attend a meeting of the national security council in the situation room at the white house. america's war cabinet, essentially. this didn't take the united states by surprise. intelligence had shown that iran was preparing an attack. indeed, it was a briefing last week for congress, members of congress who were briefed on what america saw as the threat and the iranian plans. there has been a telephone call between president biden and the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu. their first conversation since these events started. america very much involved luckily, clearly. president biden talking about the ironclad u.s. support for israel's security at this

the case. in terms of the overall situation, it is something that has been expected since the first of april where israel carried out an attack against iranian generals who were planning operations against israel from lebanon and through syria. i think the country has been preparing something for the scenario, including beefing up their air defense capabilities, calling up reservists, extra components of their air defense array. it's really not surprising. >> how involved in case of an escalation, which of course most european capitals in the region as well hope will not happen but in the case of an escalation, how involved would you predict, for example, the british military would be? >> i think obviously the united states will be doing all they

can. they are the most powerful players clearly and all of us. they are doing all they can to get israel to limit any reaction they might decide to try to take. israel's response will be dictated to a large extent by how damaging the attack is, whether any of the drones and potentially cruise missiles fired from iran and from other iranian proxies, perhaps in coordination with this strike from iran, if it happens. i think the damage is done. the damage done will dictate the israeli response. probably, if no missiles get through no drones get through, then israel might still feel obliged to carry out an attack because you can't have a foreign country firing missiles at you or drones at him and do nothing about it. i think that is the potential for escalation. in some respects, it sounds counterintuitive but i would say the harder that israel hits iran in response, let's say
9:56 pm
israel attacks iranian military targets, airbases, whatever in retaliation to this, the harder it gets to, the more likely it is that there will not be further escalation, if there is maybe a minor israeli response, then that might involve iran for the doing the same thing. it is a very complex situation, of course and the key thing is to try and avoid escalating and all out regional war. >> you are speaking to us from jerusalem. you know the area well. did you get the sense there is even a will to step back from any kind of escalation? you mentioned that israel has to respond to the iranian attack, obviously but i would say that they had to respond to the attack on their consulate in damascus. ultimately here you stop an escalation if there is a will
