tea time. mainstream republicans feel the primary pinch from tea party candidates. >> elder care outrage. disturbing video shows 591-year-old woman being abused by her caregiver. and coach crunch. controversial new airline seats aimed at putting the squeeze on passengers. good morning, i'm lynn berry. those stories and more are straight ahead. this is "1st look" on msnbc. we begin this morning with a tea party takeover.

across the country, the votes are in from a string of primary races providing a xwlgrim himse of what is to company. the gcop staefbment was upended by the tea party. tracie potts joins us there capitol hill with more. good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. we have results from seven states including washington, d.c. where the city will will get a new mayor, one of several upsets during this primary election. >> don't ever underestimate the power of we the people. >> reporter: the tea party favorite who republicans said couldn't be elected dog catcher won the party senate nomination in delaware. and in new york, political newcomer carl polidino overcame his challenger's lead to become the republican's candidate for governor. >> if we've learned anything tonight, it's that new yorkers

are as mads as hell. >> reporter: he'll take on andrew cuomo. also in new york, charlie rangel beat five other democrats and a dozen other ethics charges in his bid to stay in washington. >> no matter what they say, i go back to washington stronger than ever. >> reporter: in all, five states chose senate nominee and six more named candidates for governor. democrats are hoping to hold on to their majority. >> i'm not yielding one grain of sand. >> reporter: in d.c.'s mayor race, vince gray led fenty by nearly 9,000 votes. >> tonight the people of the district sent a message loud and clear that they want to bring character, integrity and leadership back to the mayor's office. >> reporter: and that may be the final word. there's no republican runs against him this fall. so far, eight members of congress have lost their primaries. lynn? >> thanks so much.

and just one primary result from last night that is still pending. we have the new hampshire gcht op in the primary and the latest results show with 85% of precincts reporting, kelly is ahead of ovide by about 1,000 votes. well, american hiker sarah shourd is free this morning after spending more than a year in an iranian prison. but the story is not over. two other american hikers she had been traveling with are still being held on espionage charges. andrea mitchell filed this report from tehran late last night. >> reporter: it was a happy ending tonight for sarah shourd, the 32-year-old american hiker released from an iranian prison and flown immediately to the gulf nation that by some reports put up the $500,000 that iran was demanding for her bail. >> on behalf of myself and my family, anything i'm standing

here today because of the efforts of many people and many governments. >> reporter: she was reunite there had with her mother, nora, who with the other two mothers had been pleading and lobbying and really begging for the release of their children saying that they had simply wandered across the border in iran from iraq and that they were search not spies. but the prosecutor has announced that not only are there charges against the two men, the two male hikers, shane bauer and josh fattal, that these two men are being charged with espionage and will be forced to stand trial. so their mothers, their families, the two men themselves, have very pbad news indeed tonight. back to you. now here's a look at other news going on around america. shocking video from new jersey where a caregiver is behind bars after she was seen on tape allegedly abusing her 91-year-old patient. children of the victim set up a

web cam when they saw suspicious bruises on her. the caregiver faces multiple charges of aggravated assault, neglect and welfare endangerment, all which have she denies. in louisiana, new video tape was released of a hit and run driver woulds offense was caught on walmart security camera. the driver approaches a crosswalk and mows down a 60-year-old woman who bravely pushes her daughter out of the way. seconds later, the driver clips another shopper before driving away. officials found the vehicle abandoned but they're still looking for the suspect. the 60-year-old is in the hospital with severe head injuries. a california teen got quite a scare when a 3-fat long snake coiled around pipes in the wall bit him while he slept. two nights in a row. firefighters removed the nonpoisonous critter which they believe is the lost pet of previous tenants. and in florida, a diver hauled in a monster catch.

a nine pound, two foot long lobster. he grabbed the tail and wrestled the crustacean for about 40 minutes before taking it up to the surface. he estimates there was about five pounds of meat in the tail alone. he also says that he made enchiladases with it. why not. for a look at the national weather, we turn to bill karins who i know has his lobster bib in his desk traur. >> yes. >> so if that diver is watching, lobster gram it on up. >> i've actually lived in maine and in in a. and when you order a hob sister typically at a restaurant, you're getting a maine lobster, you're not getting the spiny lobsters in florida. they don't taste as good, but -- >> you don't think that they're as good as maine lobsters? >> no, not even close. >> it's a different taste, but, you know -- >> you don't get the chlaws either.

>> that's what i was saying. >> maine lobsters are the big claws. >> i thought it was some weird cross breed of a huge fish and a lobster but in our -- so spiny lobsters don't have chaus. >> i'm here for you. >> you have a wealth of information every day. >> let me try to talk about what i actually know now. and that's what's happening in the tropics. overnight karl just popped up in a hurry and we get these storms in the caribbean because the water is so warm. once the storm starts forming, they quickly can spin up. but a strong tropical storm this morning. it's missed cancun for the most part p. it's down here in the northern belize and southern portion of the yucatan and this is coming on shore with winds of about 65 miles per hour. sometimes these storms come across the yucatan, they can head up towards texas, but this one looks to stay south of that. we'll take it off the yucatan during the day on thursday. friday it moves over the warm water of the gulf again. that's when it could regenerate into a category 1 hurricane and then go back into mexico.

so this is going to be mexico's storm over the next three or four days. now, we also have a really incredible event, we're observing it from far which is great, but we have two category 4 hurricanes at the same time out here in the atlantic. we have igor, of course, and julia really intensified overnight. that's now a category 4 also. the last time we had two major hurricanes like this in the atlantic, we have to go back to 1999. so it's long time. very rare. thankfully neither will affect the quuunited states.igor will e a category 2 hurricane when it's closest to bermuda. we'll have to see -- it's a little far away to still have a direct impact, but the timing looks to be sunday night as the storm goes right over the top there of bermuda. forecast, i haven't spent a lot of time on the east coast because it's going to be a

audience to get drive and education. the dow opens at 10,526 after dropping 17 points yesterday. the s&p was down a fraction. the nasdaq edged up four. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei added 217 points while in hong kong, the hang seng gained 29. stocks gave up their gains just after the closing bell yesterday. as skittish investors worried about the health of the global economy. fresh reports of waning confidence monger map investors coupled with stalled industrial production in some european countries weighed on investors' minds. that made so-called safe bets like gold hot commodity. the precious metal traded at a record high above $1276 an ounce. quoeoverseas, japanese offis stepped in for the first time in six times to keep its economy in check. the move has pushed the yen

sharply hoe errands stocks sharply higher. back on wall street, news that retail sales picked up at their fastest pace in five months buoyed stocks for much of the day. macy's added nearly 3% while jcpenney shares jumped a healthy 7%. meanwhile best buy shot up 7% after the electronics retailer raised its full year forecast and blew past earnings estimates. thanks to strong mobile phone sales. and good news for owners of cisco stock. the number one network gear maker says it will start paying out a 1% to 2% dividend to shareholders by july of next year. millions of jpmorgan chase customers weren't able to access their online accounts or on the go yesterday. however, the bank fix wlad it called the technical issue and restored web service early this morning. and finally, one sure sign that going green is here to stay. italian officials seized mafia linked assets worth $1.9 billion tuesday, that's the biggest mob

haul ever. according to authorities, the record wind fall came from the crime group's newest scheme laundering money new alternative energy companies. they'll also think of something. well in, health news this morning, researchers have announced an age old problem for women. punch. he gave back the trophy. first time a player has forfeited the honor. reggie bush calls the decision heartbreaking. the heisman trust has yesterday to decide if they'll give the trophy to vince young. baseball, rays hosting the yanks. tampa down two. willie aybar changed that. curtis granderson on his horse, terrific diving grab in the ninth and kept it tied at seven. jorge posada gave the yanks the lead. yanks are back in first place with an 8-7 win. duncan hit two home runs against the angels, indians won it. joe inglett with a shot up the middle.

this morning. a little bit of a breeze, too, but skies are clear. the only showers we have is in extreme northern portions of vermont and maine. but even there, a nice day today. temperatures will be about 83 in d.c., by far the warmest. everybody else in the 70s and just a nice crisp afternoon. a good day to eat your lunch out doors. buffalo cooler at 65. we also have some big thunderstorms in kansas. as far as the weather goes in our country, this is probably the worst of it today. this will head towards kansas city this afternoon. some big storming rolling out there. so the forecast for today, the only travel trouble spots if you're flying would be kansas city up into minneapolis. chicago looks nice today. it's hot in dallas. in san antonio and houston, you can't catch a break this summer. still temperatures in the mid-90s today. it's pretty hot down there from new orleans all through florida, also. but, lynn, the tropics, very active. the rest of the country kind of quiet. >> bill, thanks.
