>> good evening. a severe thunderstorm watch expired just seconds ago. has been a rough night. how much rain did we get? >> just over 2 inches of rain, almost all of that calling from late afternoon until now. a couple of heavy bands of rain moved through. some areas got some good sized hail as well. there does storm warnings earlier this evening and also a flood watch has just expired for rider on the metropolitan area. as you can see outlined here, an area from west of frederick to east of aberdeen, a band that has received one to 2 inches of rain and in some cases a little more than that. we still have rein in the forecast overnight tonight, although the storms are loyal less intense as we go through the evening. -- are a little less intense.

down to just north of the district of columbia, throughout baltimore and sell to the annapolis area. let me zoom in a little bit on this. just to the northwest of the city, right along 795 and south around annapolis and arnold and the lakeshore area and parts of montgomery county, stilt getting some pretty heavy rain. we will talk more about the forecast for the overnight hours. then we have a week ahead were some rain will continue to fall. stick around. >> the same weather system that is over maryland now produced severe storms that ripped across the southeast saturday, as many as 30 tournedos left a devastating path of destruction behind. >> tonight we are getting a new look at the tornado that ripped through yazoo city. the latest estimate indicates it

had winds of 160 miles an hour, close to 1.5 miles wide. >> we had double windows, and broke everyone of them. it just came through and demolished the front of my house. >> the damage stretches across at least 16 counties. trees were snapped in half and the bark stripped away. others were literally pulled from the earth. electric lines were tossed to the ground and left in a tangled mess. most of this picket fence community is now broken and battered. >> the winds were so intense at the time of the storm, it ripped this giant oak tree from its roots, tossing it up on to richard bennetts house. >> bennett lost just about everything. >> i grew up here my whole life, for 26 years. it is hard to believe. i did not believe it until i actually came back and saw it myself.

>> for so many, even harder to comprehend what comes next. >> you can track storms all across the country and here at home using our interactive radar. it allows you to follow the wet weather in real time. tonight, a woman is dead, her baby alive. officials say the child was in her mother's arms when they were struck at a busy intersection in rosedale. tim joins us in the newsroom with the latest on this story. >> we do not have many details about the incident, but witnesses say it was a terrible scene. they say the intersection is known to be dangerous. >> there are always police. >> robert craig soon found out what happened. a woman and a baby were crossing the philadelphia road bridge over the beltway around 4:00

sunday afternoon when baltimore county police say a pickup truck hit and killed a woman. witnesses say the baby appeared to be ok. police said the baby was taken to shock trauma for treatment. police shut down the road while investigating the accident. >> they had this one side of the street blocked off at the next light up here and there were not letting any traffic through. >> people who live and shop in the area were upset when they found out what happened. they say this is a dangerous intersection that many of them have to cross to get to the bus stop across the street. >> i think they need to do something else about the traffic lights and the cars. they were innocent bystanders. usually we have the right of way when going across the street. >> those who bought in the area said they will do whatever they have to to stay safe. >> i will be more careful when i cross the street. >> i will stay as far away from the street if i can.

>> police said the woman did not have id on her, so her identity is unknown right now. at the last check, the baby was still at the hospital being checked for broken bones. of a northwest baltimore barbershop to go up in flames. crews were called to the 4700 block of liberty heights avenue just after 6:00 this morning. the barber shop was closed, but a woman and two children who live next door had to be evacuated. meantime, in anne arundel county, a 3-year-old boy was one of three people treated in shock trauma's hyperbaric chamber. tonight, the fight continues to keep cardinal given school open. the family gathered in mass this morning hoping to keep up the momentum.

the alumni association has now launched a nonprofit group with the hope of buying the school from the archdiocese. the goal is to open cargo gibbons as an independent school in september. >> as you look from the city, you find other models for this has been successful. they have all been very successful running as independent schools. we know that can happen here. >> cardinal gibbons is one of 13 baltimore catholic school set to close. the archdiocese cites low enrollment and higher cost for the decision. baltimore's polish community gathered at holy rosary church and remember the polish president, first lady, and leaders who died in a plane crashed last week. the victims were on their way to commemorate the massacre when the presidential airliner went down in russia. maryland senator barbara

mikulski is a polish descent and attended today's memorial. >> is about remembering those who gave their lives for freedom. those who fought for freedom, whether on the brink of world war ii and also in the continued polish move for democracy. >> today's mass was followed by a procession and ceremony in downtown baltimore. this afternoon, an honor for a woman considered to be godmother of the civil rights movement. it was planned weeks before she passed on tuesday. she marched alongside dr. martin luther king jr. and led the national council of negro women for four decades. memorial services are planned for next week. we posted a three-day itinerary on our website, wbaltv.com. tackling the city's budget remains a top priority for

baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings lake, but several proposed taxes to help close the gap have come under fire. this morning the mayor addressed the concerns of some of her constituents. >> with the beverage tax, if your buying milk or juice or a large containers, you are exempt. if you cut your hair down one degree, you did not even pay the tax. we look for ways you can balance it out and ways that the burden is shared between residents, not for-profit businesses, all across the board. >> the city council is currently reviewing the mayor's budget plan. baltimore stands to gain from a change in the way that prisoners are counted in the census. the extra 12,000 residents for baltimore could carry political clout when redrawing legislative districts. maryland is the first day to make this move. lawmakers in urban areas applaud

that measure, but officials and other areas do not think it is fair. a new development in the fight for financial reform. an unnamed democratic official says a provision forcing banks to spin off their derivatives operations will be included in the legislation. derivatives are financial products that companies use to hedge against risk. they are also blamed for triggering the nation's latest financial crisis. senate democrats hope to have a test vote on potential reform tomorrow so debate can begin. depending on your route, you could run into some traffic troubles in the morning. first, it was spirit airlines and those carry-on baggage these. now the same center is taking on facebook. then, what vehicle is in your garage? it could be among thousands on tonight's recall list. >> the heavy rain continues this evening and actually the rains continued all the way out into the midwest.

>> you could face some traffic tomorrow if downtown baltimore is part of your committee. three lanes have been shut down for repairs. transportation officials say you should expect major congestion and delays. >> please remember to be patient, watch for the posted signs, and be mindful of the right turn right at that intersection at lombard. trucks and buses are prohibited from making that right turn. it is very tight because of the lane closures and the work we are doing. >> the lane closures are expected to last for two weeks,

so be sure to wake up with 11 news today. we will have the latest traffic conditions beginning at 5:00 a.m.. the same u.s. senator challenging carry-on bag fees is now taking on facebook over privacy. senator charles schumer wants the federal trade commission to issue guidelines for how social networking sites share private information. he also wants to make it easier for users to withhold private information. >> i am also asking the ftc to say it should be offered in, not opt out. if you want your information widely distributed, you have to say yes. >> facebook says the move makes it easier for people to share information about what they like all over the internet. some 33,000 ford vehicles are on the recall list tonight, including the 2010 board fusion,

explore, and explore sport trac. the consumer product safety commission reports problems with the car's front seat manual recliner gears and warns the seat back and head restraint could move backwards and a crash. although accidents are -- no accidents or injuries have been reported, but consumers should take their vehicle back to the dealer for necessary repairs. hundreds protested arizona's new emigration law at the state capitol today. it comes to days after the republican governor signed a bill requiring police to question people suspected of being in the country illegally. civil-rights advocates vowed to challenge all in court, saying it would lead to racial profiling. today in west virginia, the president and vice president join the community still reeling from the deadliest mining disaster in the decade. it was a tribute to the 29

miners who lost their lives. ♪ >> in west virginia, an emotional farewell to the 29 miners lost in the worst mine accident this nation has seen in 40 years. president obama, joined by vice president biden, was there to pay his respects to those who perished. >> these miners lived as they died, in pursuit of the american dream. >> he paid tribute to those who go back into the minds every single day. one by one, the loss minors names were read aloud. their family members filed in, and a helmet was placed on a wide cross. it has been nearly three weeks since the deadly explosion at the upper big branch line. the investigation is just beginning.

you can see the bands of rain reaching all the way back to montgomery county right now, and pretty good rain up in harford county. as we move west, the rain let up a little bit and becomes more scattered. i guess that is the good news. we have at some generous amounts of rainfall and done some catching up on the shortfall of rain we had in april. let's pull the be back on the radar and show you the wider storm. the storm's center is back in ohio and is still growing rain at us. the storm's center still has to come over us, and that will happen tomorrow night. the threat of rain is with us, but the heaviest rain is moving out of the picture right now. 60 was a high at the airport, 59 at the inner harbor. the war front is just to this out. -- the war front is just to the

south. at the inner harbor, 1.31 inches measured so far. here are the temperatures right now. the airport is 53, annapolis 55, cambridge 59. fredericksburg is at 59, 51 at mckinley. they have warmed up a few degrees. the clouds are not as intense and the warm front is still just to ourselves. we are still in the cool air and the easterly flow coming off the ocean. the front will still be in the vicinity during the day tomorrow. the storm center will be passing over this by late in the day tomorrow. once it gets passed us, the rain

chances will start to back off. showers and storms continued tonight, but become less intense as we get into the evening and overnight hours. out to the west waof us, tomorrw mostly cloudy skies. variable winds at 5-10, and not as much rain as we had today. 63-74 the high. the heavy rain is lined up north of the front this evening. futurecast lets the reign of during the day tomorrow, but as the storm's center comes through, rain chances continue into early tuesday before things finally clear out. in the backwash of the storm, they expect some snow up in new york state. we will not be that cold or that wet. here is a look at the seven-day
