collection. >> vincent van gogh's "irises." museums can be inspiring. from the getty it was time to go back in time to where -- [ speaking in a foreign language ] -- began. where are we right now? >> el pueblo historical monument, the birthplace of the city of los angeles. the city began right here in 1781. >> i seem to make friends quickly. i love a guy that can dance. >> people tend to forget there's a history, a really deep history, and what's familiar here is you'll see the circular plaza in the center and if you travel to central america or mexico, every town, every pueblo, has a central plaza. los angeles has a central plaza. >> that's interesting, in the midwest where i'm from we have all squares.

then, from the historic to the pre-historic. the la brea tar pits are home to fossil s from over 650 types of plants and animals, mostly from the last ice age. we have millions of fossils found right in the city. you look around, there's buildings, there's cars zooming by. >> oh, my gosh. >> yeah, we're standing right on top of an oil field. >> right now we're sitting on top of a section of a fossil deposit. why is this area so rich with fossils? >> we're very lucky in all of los angeles basins is a giant oil field and this area is where the crude oil has been coming up to the surface for tens of thousands of years and it can only happen rarely, so it was enough to preserve these animals for tens of thousands of years. >> now it's time for a little less of this, as my dad says, and a little more of this.
