right now on "nbc10 news today" a deadly shooting overnight in philadelphia. this morning police say they have a person of interest in the case. we are tracking developments in the ebola outbreak as concerns about the deadly virus move a little bit closer to our area. it is a beautiful fall morning. live look outside at boathouse row where temperatures could reach 70 degrees today. good morning. this is "nbc10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. it's 6:00 on this saturday. let's get right to our weekend weather with meteorologist michelle grossman.

michelle, going to be hard to beat yesterday. >> we're going to beat it today. we're going to be near 70 degrees. we're going to probably beat it a couple times as we head throughout the workweek. here is a live look outside. down the shore point from our cape may camera. waking up to clear skies across the area. we will see lots of supposed shine today. ing looking to be a very beautiful afternoon. taking a look at temperatures. they're a little chilly this morning. see a lot of blue on the map indicating lots of 40s out there. 41 as you wake up in allentown. good morning in lancaster, 45. 49 degrees in philadelphia. temperatures in the 30s in millville. that's always the cool spot. 38 there. 42 in atlantic city. 47 in dover. so again, waking up to clear skies. pretty shot from our adventure aquarium looking over center city. get ready for sunshine. wash the car. get out, do some things. 52 by 8:00 a.m. by noon, looking nice. 62 degrees. near 70 this afternoon. even warmer during your seven-day.

we'll talk about that coming up. new from overnight. one man is dead. another is wounded after a shooting in philadelphia. nbc10 was on the scene in kensington where police tell us the gunfire erupted at fourth street and indy nan avenue after midnight. 25-year-old man was rushed to the hospital where he died. a second man showed up at the hospital with a leg wound is being held by police as a person of interest. also new from overnight. philadelphia police are investigating another shooting. a man was shot at second and carpenter streets just before 3:00 this morning. the victim was taken to the hospital but his condition is unknown right now. police have not made any arrests yet thin this case. today marks the first full day of a new quarantine order issued by the governors of new york and new jersey. that taum 21-day quarantine includes any health care workers who have gone to west africa to

treat ebola patients. nbc10's matt delucia has been following the new developments. he's live in the digital operations center this morning. matt, explain exactly how and where this quarantine order is being enforced. >> rosemary, the new measures will impact those who are flying into jfk or newark airports. specifically health care workers who treated ebola patients in west african countries. this of course comes just a couple of days after a doctor in new york was hospitalized. that happened thursday night. he is now being treated for ebola. now with this new quarantine a health care worker who arrived in newark yesterday was immediately put into isolation. this worker apparently had no symptoms of the virus upon arrival at the airport but has since developed a fever and is being evaluated at the hospital. yesterday governors andrew cuomo and chris christie says a voluntary quarantine is just not enough. >> new jersey and new york are going to determine the standards of quarantine since cdc's guidelines are continue you'lly

empty. the superintendent issued a statement saying swift and firm action had to be taken after verifying improper conduct by members of the bucks football team. according to police younger players were hazed by seniors in a waterboarding type of incident. and there are also allegations that a freshman player was forced to touch another player in a sexual manner. >> it's kind of a beg letdown but the decision was completely correct. >> i think that what the school district decided to do is the correct choice. >> kids need to learn a lesson. unfortunately it affected everybody. for that i'm sad. effort kids who weren't involved. >> the cb west coaches were suspended from football activities but not from their teaching jobs at the school. we have new information this morning about a sex tape allegedly made by philadelphia school children. two 13-year-old boys have now been arrested. sources say the tape was made on linmore avenue in southwest

philadelphia. they are students at william tilden middle school. they had sex with a 11-year-old girl and posted the video on instra gram. investigators are looking for anybody else who may have been involved. in chester county a priest is being held on charges related to sending and receiving child pornography on the internet. investigators found pictures of naked underage girl on an instagram account linked to father mark haynes. he has been a priest at st. simon and jude parish. investigators say haynes admitted to sending and receiving about 150 images which were all traced back to the rectory at st. simon and jude. according to police, haynes told them he posed as a 16-year-old girl on a dating site several years ago and received lewd videos from somebody he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. the archdiocese of philadelphia is calling the charges seriousnd disturbing and says they are cooperating with the investigation.

a pennsylvania state senator will plead guilty to accusations that she used her elected office for political and financial gain. >> she's going to plead guilty to the charges? >>s a of now, that's correct, yes. >> that's the attorney for leanna washington confirming to nbc10 that his client will plead guilty at a hearing next week although it's unclear exactly what the terms of the plea are. her lawyer would not disclose that to us. the 69-year-old democrat is facing felony charges for allegedly using her taxpayer funded staff to plan and to host political fund-raisers. washington, by the way, represents parts of philadelphia and montgomery county. >> i could use a good four months to get back in shape. get my six pack back. >> that's what former philly mob boss joey merlini told reporters. sentenced for violating the terms of his probation. he met with a former mob captain at south florida cigar bar but

never reported the meeting to his parole officer. merlino has 30 days to report to prison. this weekend the clock is ticking on a possible septa strike vote. the transit agency's largest union will decide tomorrow whether to authorize a walkout. the union says at this point there's no plans for a work stoppage but if it comes to that the union will release a plan for service interruptions before a strike. 4700 bus drivers, subway, and trolley operators and maintenance workers have been working under an expired contract since march. the negotiations continue and pensions and health care benefits are the main sticking points. still is an active investigation. we still have investigators at the school, processing that scene. >> next, we are learning more about the student whom police say went on a shooting rampage at a high school in washington state. and the parents of journalist james foley talk

td bank. america's most convenient bank. are wrapping up their on-site investigation. the freshman opened fire yesterday inside the cafeteria of marysville-pilchuck high school. the gunman has been identified as jalen fryberg. he was recently crowned the school's homecoming prince. fryberg shot and killed one student, wounded five others, and then turned the gun on himself. he just checked earlier this morning and we know that three of the victims are the critical condition. another is stable. we are working to find out the condition of that fifth student. according to witnesses, fryberg recently argued with a classmate about a break-up with a girl. late last night police gave an update on their homicide

investigation. >> there's still a lot of work to do. we want to make sure that we do this right. we want to make sure that we have all of the right answers. and that's what we're going to do, by taking our time, doing it thoroughly, and providing information only after it is complete. >> police say that two of the wounded victims are cousins of the shooter. today marks day 43 in the police manhunt for alleged cop killer eric frein. he is still on the run. now another man from the pocono mountains is facing charges in connection to the case. michael was charged yesterday with making false reports. according to police, he told them that frein asked him for a fake id so he could get into canada. he later admitted that he was lying and that that wasn't true. frein has evaded police and fbi agents since mid september. that's when police say he ambushed two pennsylvania state troopers in pike county, killing one and wounding the others. searchers believe that frein may

have been spotted on monday near pocono east high school. let's head now to virginia where authorities say remains found last weekend are those of missing college student hannah graham. they're confirming it. the uva sophomore disappeared a month ago. suspect jesse matthew jr. has been charged with abduction with intent to defile graham. the county attorney is determining what additional charges to bring against him. the parents of james foley, the american journalist executed by isis, are talking about the steps they're taking to help families in similar situations. diane and john foley spoke to nbc's andrea mitchell yesterday. they told her they talked to released hostages from spain and france who had contact with james while he was in captivity. the hostages told them that james organized games and lectures to keep everybody going, keep their spirits up. his parents are now establishing a james foley legacy fund in his memory. >> one of the main things we

hope to accomplish is to be a support for any american families who have a loved one who is hostage and to encourage a dialogue. >> isis militants abducted james foley in 2012 while he was working in syria. he was beheaded in august, becoming the first american citizen killed by isis. 16 coal miners are dead after their shaft collapsed in northwestern china. another 11 miners were hurt in the disaster. it struck just before midnight our time. work safety officials in china are no investigating. torrance shul rains flooded the homes and businesses. the russian water overturned hundreds of cars yesterday. look at that. firefighters rescued trapped drivers and pumped waters from flooded basement. they are doing all they could. fortunately there have been no reports of any injuries. forecasters say though that the

superstar mone davis. she was pictured on the cover of ""sports illustrated"" and made all kinds of tv appearances. now she's the subject of a spike lee documentary and a commercial that's running during this year's world series. >> i stand for girls who want to play sports with the boys and to be a role model for people, young and old. i throw 70 miles per hour. that's throwing like a girl. >> you said it. the chevrolet ad is part of the 16-minute documentary that's called "i throw like a girl" filmed by spike lee in south philadelphia. in the documentary mone and her family talk about her passion for all sports. she's apparently a tremendous basketball player. also talk about her life off the field and her plans for the future. you also hear from her coaches and how she became a superstar on the mound at such an early

doctors and nurses will soon have traping on their smartphones and tablets to handle ebola patients. the cdc has asked the experts at johns hopkins medicine to lead a group to develop a web-based training tool for ebola. the program will focus in part on how to put on and take off personal protective equipment. it's expected to be available on the cdc website in the next few weeks. surgeons in australia have performed the first successful transplant of a heart. it stopped beating. until now trans plants only used a beating donor heart from a brain dead patient. the new transplant technique involves resus statating hearts pumping blood through them. it could increase the number of hearts available for transplant. the city of philadelphia is encouraging smokers to quit with the first tobacco free pharmacy network in the country. it's called the preferred healthnet work and encourages city employees who are not covered by union benefits to use pharmacies that do not sell

tobacco products. city workers who use other pharmacies will be charged an additional $15 more per prescription. >> it could potentially, positively impact the health of a much broader community and allows the city to manage health care costs and larger, more wide spread benefit changes. >> city officials say hundreds of independent pharmacies and three retail chains have registered. the changes start january 1st. the time right now is 6:26. nbc10 was on the scene in kensington where police tell us the gunfire erupted at fourth street and indiana avenue just after midnight. 25-year-old man was rushed the hospital where he died. it's the wounded man who showed up later at the hospital that caught the a tensittention of p >> second male, he might possibly turn into a suspect. right now he's a person of interest and under police guard for involvement -- possibly involved with the shooting. >> police say at least one witness saw the wounded man run from the shooting scene into a house. investigators have not found a weapon in that area but they tell us that they're going to be looking at any surveillance images that may be available from the scene. there are new standards in place this morning for passengers landing at either jfk or newark airport. the governors of new york and new jersey have ordered a mandatory 21-day quarantine for anybody who goes through those airports who have had direct contact with ebola patients in

west africa. matt delucia is live in the digital operation center. matt, this is not an option anymore, not voluntary, right? >> yes. the key word here is mandatory. before yesterday health care workers who were treating ebola patients in west africa could voluntarily put themselves in isolation. now at least that was the request. but that is not the case anymore. this week a doctor in new york was hospitalized and is now being treated for ebola. and now the first person to be placed in this new quarantine, a health care worker, she flew in to newark liberty airport yesterday. she was immediately put into isolation. this worker apparently had no symptoms of the virus upon arrival but has since developed a fooef youer and is being evaluated at newark hospital. yesterday, governors andrew cuomo and chris christie said this is about responsibility for protecting the public. as of right now some residents still have serious concerns. >> we put people who have certain professions to higher

standards so i think that's why people are upset and i think they have a right to be. >> now, the health care worker being monitored this morning in newark had been working with doctors without borders. here's who they're saying. doctors without borders has enjacketed strict protocols governing the return of its health workers to their home countries. we act in full compliance with official public health regulations. right now the organization says that it is going over the new regulations set in place by new york and new jersey and adding that it does intend to comply with those regulations. live in the digital operation center, matt delucia, nbc10 news. here in our area, some first responders from south jersey are getting potentially life-saving training on ebola awareness. nbc10 was in clayton county yesterday where the doctor and the county's director of nursing spoke about the virus and its threat to public health. the training focused on personal protective commitment and guidelines for first responders

construction will begin next summer. the project is expected to be finished in three years. plenary's must then maintain the bridges for the next 25 years. >> today we launched an effort to rebuild 558 structure deficient brinls in a rapid method that has not yet been done throughout the country. >> the average cost per bridge is $1.6 million. the entire project will cost the state of pennsylvania $65 million a year. relief is on the way for drivers on the new jersey turnpike. work on widening a 35-mile stretch in burlington and middlesex counties is finishing a i head of schedule. it's also $200 million under budget. the reconstructed stretch of the turnpike will go from six laps to 12 lanes. the northbound lanes will open tomorrow and then the southbound lanes will open next weekend. today a once in a lifetime opportunity, the mainline mansion that belongs to the

federal prosecutors are looking into an airbag recall that could involve even more cars than the recent recall with gm. investigators say there could be 30 million vehicles nationwide with faulty airbags. me the vices could explode spraying drivers and passengers with metal shrapnel. prurts are looking at whether the japanese maker of the airbags misled safety regulators. meanwhile, dealers, kus mores, and safety experts all agree that this is a big problem and it needs to be fixed right now. >> this is the biggest that i've been involved in, being with honda, really we haven't had anything of this scale. >> my kids are the most important thing -- most important people in my life right now and i really want to make sure that they're safe. >> this is a lethal defect and this is a government agency that has totally botched this investigation and recall. >> to find out if your car is on

the recall list, first write down your number, then go to nbc10.com, we'll link you to an online database where you can type in that vin number to check. it is getting to be that time of year. ups is expecting a double digit surge in shipments as the holiday shopping season gets under way. to hand the workload it plans to hire up to 95,000 seasonal workers. you may remember last year ups was caught off guard by the mum b number of people who bought gifts off line and shipped them at the last minute. some deliveries diplomat even make it until after the holidays last year. a new survey finds that hiring is healthy but wages are not going up. that's one of the stories in this week's business news. let's check in now with cnbc's tyler mathisen. >> good news for apple last week with more than 39 million iphones sold and best quarter ever, ever, for sales of its mac personal computers. apple easily whipping earnings forecast last quarter. ipad sales though down another

12%. reflecting an industry wide decline of tablet sales. different story at ibm. totally so. big blue missed its earnings forecast on weak revenue growth. it also incurred a big charge to offload its struggling chip making unit. paying another company -- paying another company $1.2 billion to take it over. an actual highway traffic safety administration raised big concern for owners of more than 6 million vehicles. airbags, many made by japanese company, called tacata, those airbags can explode in an accident sending shrapnel flying. the recall affects most popular brands of automobiles including bmws, general motors car, honda, mazda, nissan, toyotas. new survey of business economists finds hiring is healthy but wages are not going up. only a quarter of companies surveyed raised wages in the summer quarter. that's down from 43% in the spring.
