nbc 10 news starts now. >> right now on nbc 10 news today, septa workers preparing the way for what could be a strike. a live look over center city. we are expecting a sunny but windy end to the weekend. good morning. this is nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary conners. it's 5:30 on this sunday. michelle grossman is tracking the weekend weather for us. unlike yesterday, the wind is really going to be kicking up today, right? >> oh yeah, we're going to see winds at 30 miles per hour at times. not quite as warm as yesterday.

with the winds, it's going to feel cooler than 66. the temperatures up overnight, but lots of sunshine today. pottstown 15 degrees warmer than normal. temperatures mainly in the 50s and 60s as opposed to the 30s and 40s yesterday. some spots in the 40s. that would be mount pocono 47. but a warm or mild 58 in pottstown. 60 degrees right now in philadelphia. temperatures not going very far from here, though. at 8:00 a.m. 60. by 10:00, 61. sunshine tomorrow, but we are tracking rain in your seven-day. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. >> we'll check back with you soon. today septa union workers will vote whether to authorize a strike. they are on the job without a

new contract. matt dlucia is live in philadelphia. walk us through what's going to happen today. >> that strike authorization vote is scheduled for 3:00 today. this affects subways, buses, trolleys and maintenance workers. services are still running and septa says it has been given no indication at least at this point that a work stoppage is imminent. that said, if a strike is approved by the 4,700 members of the union, then the leadership says it will decide on a date and time for that to happen should contract negotiations fail. twu has been without a contract since march. the union president says he is still making efforts at the bargaining table but continuing to work without a contract he says is unfair to members and passengers. septa tells us both sides have been meeting to reach an agreement. if a strike does happen in the

future, septa says it will issue a work stoppage plan so that people can still get around to where they need to go if that strike does, in fact, happen. new from overnight, a man is in critical condition following this crash in philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene at east crown avenue where two pickup trucks collided this morning. police are investigating the cause of this crash. today, the u.s. ambassador to the united nations is expected to arrive in guinea. samantha power will focus her attention on the need for increased international response in the countries hit hardest by ebola. meanwhile, the fiancee of the new york city doctor with ebola is beginning three weeks of quarantine at the couple's apartment. morgan dixon was released from bellevue hospital last night. the new york health department says while she has no symptoms, it's a necessary precaution

because her fiance, dr. craig spencer, tested positive. this weekend, a cleaning crew disinfected the apartment complex where they live. neighbors say they're not worried. >> she didn't catch it. that means other people in the building probably won't catch it, you know? >> i feel for him too just because everyone's freaking out. >> dr. spencer's condition has gotten worse, but health officials say they expected that. even so, the doctor remains awake and communicative at bellevue hospital. he's getting state of the art anti-viral and plasma treatments. he's been at the hospital since thursday when he first reported having a fever. also under mandatory quarantine is the nurse in newark, new jersey, who returned to the u.s. this week after taking care of ebola patients in west africa. this morning she is criticizing the way she says she's being treated. as we told you yesterday morning, preliminary tests for ebola came back negative for nurse kaci hickox.

the isolation policy is part of a new mandate by the governors of new jersey and new york. they're requiring a mandatory quarantine for anybody arriving at newark or jfk airports who has had direct contact with anyone infected with the deadly virus. yesterday in "the dallas morning news," she called the measure "a frenzy of disorganization and fear that made her feel like a criminal." some passengers at newark's airport say they understand the nurse's frustration. >> i think that's a long time, but if that's what they need to do, it's a necessary, yeah, okay, we have to do that, we have to make sure that it doesn't spread around here. >> new jersey governor chris christie says he sympathizes with her, but has to do what he can to ensure public health safety. you can count on nbc 10 to help address your concerns about the ebola virus. tomorrow morning we will have two medical professionals right here at the nbc 10 studios

answering your questions. so if you have a question, you can send it in right now. just log on to the nbc 10 facebook page and look for the ebola q&a section. we will answer your questions live tomorrow morning from 4:00 to 7:00 right here on nbc 10 news today. this morning, philadelphia police are searching for a couple whom they say beat a man with a bat and then shot him. we first told you about this shooting yesterday morning. this happened at second and carpenter streets in queen village. the 36-year-old victim told philadelphia police that the couple walked up to him and said, you know what you did. then the woman hit him with a bat. when the victim tried to run away, the man shot him in the leg. a neighbor describes what happened next. >> immediately heard people yelling at each other and some obscenities. immediately after that, the guy was saying help me, somebody call the balance or the cops. >> the victim is in critical condition. now police are trying to determine if this was a random attack or if he was targeted for a reason. in the nicetown neighbor of

philadelphia, investigators are looking into what caused a fire that forced a family of 20 out of their home. this happened around 3:30 yesterday afternoon on the 3800 block of north 15th street. crews had blaze under control within half an hour. fortunately, nobody was hurt. the family is now staying at the red cross house in university city. now to news in atlantic city, where friends and loved ones are hoping for the safe return of a missing mother. nbc 10 was at a vigil last night for sapphire wiggins. the 23-year-old has not been heard from since october 15th. police found wiggins' car parked outside of her apartment last week. concerns came to light after her boyfriend was found dead of an apparent suicide in camden county. now to the latest in the philadelphia school budget crisis. a state judge is expected to rule this week on the legal flap between the teachers union and the school district. an injunction issued last week stopped the school district from

forcing teachers to contribute to their benefits. the judge will decide if the case can stay in state commonwealth court or be moved to philadelphia common pleas court. today it's the second and last day of the head of the regat regatta. nbc 10 was there for the first yesterday. thousands were on the river. the event features rowers from middle school age to masters in their 80s and hail from 26 states in six countries. this morning there are new developments in the deadly school shooting in washington state. next we'll tell you who is now being called a hero for helping to stop the shooter. plus, people in hawaii are preparing to evacuate as molten lava creeps closer and closer. the warning from officials that

this is nbc 10 news. >> this morning, we are taking a live look at the center city skyline. it's just about 60 degrees out there. we're going to warm up into the mid 60 this is the philadelphia area. not going to be as warm as it was yesterday, but michelle grossman says it will be sunny. just be prepared for a little bit of wind. this morning we are learning more about the deadly shooting at a washington state high school on friday. some of the victims are related to the gunman. we've also learned that a newly-hired teacher at the high school confronted the gunman, identified as jaylen fryberg. a witness says that teacher intercepted fryberg as he was trying to reload. the attack left one girl dead and four others seriously hurt.

fryberg also took his own life at the scene. family members say he targeted friends and relatives. two of the victims were his cousins. >> he had a look on his face like he was just realizing what he did. i think he had a change of heart. if he had wanted to, he could have gone on. >> friends say fryberg recently got into an argument with another student over a racial slur that was made. law enforcement sources claim that he may have been in a recent dispute over a girl. people in canada are also in mourning this weekend after the loss of a soldier who was shot and killed in ottawa on wednesday. hundreds gathered at the national war memorial last night. they hand a candle light individual in honor of corporal nathan cirillo. the soldier was standing guard at the memorial when he was gunned down. a military funeral is planned for corporal cirillo this tuesday. it will be held in hamilton, his

hometown. he was killed by michael zehaf-bibeau. he die there had in a shootoff in police. canada's prime minister called the shooting a terror attack. in the fight against isis, this is the latest video of u.s.-led coalition strikes on isis targets in syria. according to u.s. officials, coalition war planes destroyed an isis artillery position this weekend. kurdish forces have been battling the islamic state militants in this area for more than a month now. happening right now in ukraine, voters are going to the polls to elect a new parliament. the voting is being held in areas outside the influence of pro-russian rebels. president petro poroshenko's party is expected to get the most support, but it's unclear if the party will be able to form a government without help from rival groups. let's head now to hawaii where authorities are telling several dozen residents living near a lava flow to get ready to evacuate in the next few days.

i'm meteorologist michelle grossman. a cold front is sparking a few tiny showers to the north and west. otherwise we're looking at a nice day today. temperatures not quite as warm as yesterday, but also looking at some winds really whipping as we head throughout the afternoon. the sunshine will return, some seeing tiny showers, but we will see a sunny afternoon, a very sunny afternoon. not as warm as yesterday. the temperatures topping out in the mid 60s, so still a little above normal, but not the 70 we saw yesterday. the winds are going to pick up as we head throughout the morning, into the afternoon and evening hours and could gust near 30, even 31, 32 miles per hour at times. if you're heading out, just be aware of that. looking good from our cape may camera. we're waking up to partly cloudy skies. it's to our northern areas where we're seeing just isolated little tiny showers. right now, 60 degrees in philadelphia. winds out of the west-northwest at 10 miles per hour. even starting to pick up right

now. it will be windy as we head throughout the afternoon. notice that 24-hour change, 12 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. closer to normal today. friday, saturday, really warm for this time of year. topped out right around 70. today closer to 66 with those winds. i think we're going to feel a little cooler than that. average this time of year is 63 degrees. taking a look at temperatures across the region. some blue showing up on the map indicating cooler air. everywhere else, we're doing really mild this morning. 59 in reading. 60 degrees in philadelphia. 59 in wild wood. 56 in atlantic city. winds will be the big story today. we're seeing brizy conditions right now in some spots. 20 miles per hour in lancaster. you can see that cooler air coming from can dasm that's what we're going to see today. reading, 12-mile-per-hour winds. gusts as we head throughout the

morning, afternoon, even hours. so future gusts, around 20, 22 miles per hour. it's going to stick with us through the dinnertime hours. once that sun does set, we'll start to lose those winds through the overnight hours. we are tracking a few teeny showers. hard to see them on radar. they're really, really small. that's that cold front sparking them. we are looking at that cold front moving through. the biggest story, we're looking at the winds. today 54 to 67, sunny and windy. it's going to be a cold one. we're going to see temperatures dropping into the 30s, 40s. mostly clear. we're going to lose those winds overnight. seven-day forecast, looking good to get back to school and work on monday. lots of sunshine. pretty close to normal for this time of year. wednesday, things begin to change. it still will be mild, 70, but we're looking at mostly cloudy

penn state lost to 13th ranked ohio state in double overtime. the nittany lions came back from a 17-0 deficit. but the buckeyes scored touchdowns in each of the extra periods. ohio state won it 31-24. today in philadelphia, an eagles watch party for a good cause. the center for grieving children will host a fundraiser. a $10 donation gets you in the door. it will be held at paddywhacks pub at second street. this morning there is a new owner of the main line mansion. the estate on mount morrow road in villanova was auctioned off yesterday. the 10,000 square foot home sits on more than three and a half acres. it was most recently listed for more than $6 million. they didn't get that price, so it sold for the bargain price of $2,227,500. the winning bidder's name, by the way, is not being released.
