with just weeks to go before the iowa caucus, the polls find newt gingrich ahead una republican race by 25% in fact, followed by ron paul and mitt romney in third place. after dropping out of the race this weekend. cain's endorsement, up for grabs. gingrich and rivals are trying to line up meetings with cain. donald trump a potent force in the presidential race. gingrich and the donald meet in new york. trump told "usa today" he may enter the race and chosen to moderate a gop debate. but as we report, not all the candidates will show up. >> reporter: maybe they picked mr. trump to hold the presidential debate on december 27th because he is never shy. >> meat loaf, you are fired. >> reporter: this is the man essentially forced a sitting president of the united states to prove he was born in his own country. >> we do not have time for this kind of silliness.

this morning on "world news now" -- shot down. iran's armed forces say they shot down an unmanned american spy plane and issued a warning to the u.s. military. >> now there are serious concerns about that downed drone. and what iraq might learn from it. it's monday, december 5th. and good monday morning. i'm dan kloeffler in for rob nelson. >> i'm sunny hostin. the u.s. is admitting it lost track of a drone last week over

afghanistan. so this could be that missing spy plane, but the question is -- why hasn't iran shared pictures of it to prove the drone was shot down? >> yeah, a lot of back and forth. what is the real story? we'll take a look at that in a minute. also this morning, country sing er mccready was found in a closet with her son zander. what is next for her and her son? this bizarre custody battle is increasing. >> she is pregnant with twins. a lot involved there. later this half-hour, history is made in scotland where two pandas arrived from china. talk about a party that if got the royal treatment. even a parade. >> panda watch. monday morning style. but first on this monday though, could one of the most cutting edge american spy planes being in enemy hands this morning? well iran is claiming it shot down a new generation of u.s. drones inside its borders and it is vowing now to retaliate. >> but if it is true the bigger threat could come from what

secrets the drone might reveal. here is abc's martha raddatz. >> reporter: the claim came on iranian state television, quoting sources iran shot down an unmanned spy plane in the eastern part of the country which borders afghanistan. but what was most disturbing, the iranians said it was an rq-170, one of the super secret drones, although it has appeared on the internet, that can presumably operate without detection. the iranians have lied about such things in the past, but alarms went off a few hours later when the u.s. said in a statement that they had lost control of a u.s. unarmed reconnaissance aircraft over western afghanistan. the u.s. will not say what type of drone crashed. but it was not shot down. although a u.s. senior military official told abc news, we are assuming iran has something.

there are provisions built into drones to protect sensitive technology. if contact is lost, that information can be remotely erased. but if this is indeed a stealth drone, pieces of the skin itself could be used to try to duplicate stealth surfaces. remember the stealth helicopter that went down in the bin laden raid. pakistan reportedly let china have a look at that technology. >> there are important secrets that can be lost either by looking at the kind of material that is used on the skin of the stealth e.r. airplane or a look at the shapes. >> reporter: this comes at a tense time with iran, reports that they continue to work on nuclear weapons, tighter sanctions and recent storming of the british embassy by iranian hard-liners. but iran has failed to release any images of a drone it may or may not have, u.s. officials are wondering why. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. that's the question, why not

diane sawyer and george stephanopoulos will moderate. dozens of occupy protestors have been arrested in washington, d.c. after refusing to remove an unfinished wooden structure they had built. sunday morning, police told them they would need a permit and gave them an hour to tear it down. when they refused police moved in and began arresting people. >> dramatic, emotional twist over the weekend in the kus battle for mindy mccready's son. authorities took custody of the 5-year-old finding him hiding in a cloz eset with his mother. mccready's family is speaking out. more from fort myers. >> it's been, been pretty traup m -- pretty traumatic. >> reporter: a near two week wait to return her son. ended in a closet in heber springs. >> can't imagine.
