joins us over the telephone now with the latest on this. captain moxley, thanks so much for joining us. what can you tell bus what's going on at this moment? >> at the present time in what you earlier reported, the situation started unfolding around 7:24 morning with an armed robbery that occurred at a jewelry store. at the time a single suspect broke into a house in the 200 block that was occupied by a family. the family was unharmed. at that point he stole a vehicle from that location and left the area. subsequently a short time later, potential breaking and entering in the 700 block southwest in leesburg. when officers arrived on the scene, they were able to assess and determine that what we had was that yen gann from the same armed robbery earlier and had taken hostages inside of the house and currently at this time as we speak, we were in

negotiation was that individual. >> captain moxley, have you evacuated houses nearby in the area? >> we have done that. that was done initially when we arrived on the scene. evacuations were made. we feel we are in total control of the neighborhood at the tremendous time. and we are just -- cautiously optimistic and will approach the situation. >> what do you know about the condition of the hostages in that house at this point? >> what we do know is that they are all right at this time. we do not believe they suffered from any medical emergencies or anything of that nature. and at the present time what we are going to say about that situation. >> is he making demands? i know you guys generally are cautious about coming with things like that. can you tell whether or not he's asking for things. >> we are not going to go into that. it is unfolding at this time. >> thank you. >> captain moxley with the leesburg police department. thanks for joining us. >> thank you. >> we will continue to update you on the story developing throughout the newscast. thousands of people are

relatives buried in a cemetery are checking to see if their loved one's graves have been disturb. >> four cemetery workers are are under arrest accused of digging up corpses and reselling the plots. >> heartache over the way that staff handled a casket of an iconic figure from the civil rights movement. >> reporter: authorities investigating the burial plot reselling scheme at burr oaks cemetery near chicago say they have been flooded with calls from relatives of people buried there. >> we had over 2,000 families here since yesterday morning. >> reporter: investigators think as many as 300 gravesites were dug up. then the plots were resold. the cemetery's manager and three of the grave diggers have all been charge d. >> nothing there but a big old hole. >> reporter: there's more outrage over the cemetery's mishandling of a piece of civil rights history. the original casket of

14-year-old emmitt till. till was buried avenue his brutal beating and lynching death in 1955 in mississippi. his mother insisted on an open coffin at the funeral. so the world could see the results of racial hatred. so profound to the movement was till's death that four years ago, lawmen exhumed his body for another investigation. till was then reburied in a new casket. the original one cast aside. out of sight. until now. discovered in a dilapidated shed on cemetery property. >> there was wildlife living inside of it. we finally -- we quickly came to the conclusion it washe original casket and emmitt till was buried in. >> civil rights activist jesse jackson inspected the casket himself. >> it is painful to see the disregard for the history. >> reporter: till's gravesite at burr oak was not disturbed at

the scene at the investigation that was started four years ago and netted the schemers $300,000. >> we still don't know whe michael jackson's final resting place will be but we have learned where the remains are right now. sources say jackson's body is at forest lawn memorial park and the family crypt of motown records founder ba eer berry go. the family held a memorial. it is believed jackson's body will remain at forest lawn until the family decides on a permanent location. one funeral expert says delays like this are not uncommon. a hearing will be held monday involving custody of jackson's children. a monument to michael jackson is being unveiled in the hometown of gary, indiana, today. one of the centerpieces, the stone tablet. it weighs 5,000 pounds and stands eight feet tall and features an image of the singer. eated by a company in richmond, indiana. the stone memorial cost $25,000

but the company is donating it to the city for free. in pennsylvania swim club is in hot water. now state officials say they will investigate accusations of racial discrimination inviting a group of camp kids. the camp paid nearly $2,000 to the valley club in hunting ton valley so the kids can swim there once a week. shortly after they arrived june 29, some of the campers said they heard racial comments. the camp is made up of mostly black and hispanic swims clubs and the membership are mostly white. >> why there a so many black kids here and she was afraid we might try to do something to our children. >> several days later the children were asked not to return and their money was refunded sparking outrage and accusations of racial discrimination. the club maintains that overcrowding, not race, was the problem. however, the pennsylvania human relations commission said if the group was denied because of race, that is a crime. pennsylvania senator specter has vowed to look into it. new details this afternoon in the crash had a killed five

people yesterday near detroit and including a man from northern virginia. police now say a 19-year-old with a suspended license was driving the car and that went around a railroad gate and hit by a train. the man lost his license earlier this month after he failed to show up in court to answer a number of driving charges. the five people killed in yesterday's accident arrange ranged in age from 14 to 21. the 21-year-old, terrence harris, is from stafford, virginia. no word on whether alcohol played a role inhis crash. supermarket surprise for some shoppers when their trip to the market took a walk on the wild side. >> and a refund for some power customers in maryland. >> here are four other stories making headlines in our area today. >> the court hearing for the suspect in last month's deadly shooting at the holocaust museum has been postponed again. 88-year-old james vaughn brunt is accused of shooting a security guard and he had a court date scheduled for today but his doctors said that he's still recovering after being

shot in the face by guards at the museum. von brunn is in a lockdown ward. another hearing is set for july 30th. manassas police are still searching for man accusedf trying to abduct blond teenage girls. police released this sketch of the suspect and he's described as hispanic and in his late 30s to early 40s. fliers have been handed out with the description of the blue minivan that was used in tuesday's attempt. the driver of that van attempted to grab the 16-year-old girl and yelled for her to get in the car. a giant food store in stafford county has its own mystery shopper. a black bear. colleen ericson took these pictures of a bear pawing through the shopping carts outside the store. the bear seems unconcerned about being in the suburbs. he didn't get into the store and wandered off without harming any people or property. officials say that more encounters with the wildlife will be happening as the animals

all right. let's talk about what's going on. 78 now in the beltway. 80 out at dulles international. 81 in manassas. little bit cooler at pax river, 78 degrees. dew points are in the upper 50s. low 60s this is very, very comfortable for this time of year. these numbers will also start to climb tomorrow. southwesterly winds start to bring in low-level moisture. it will feel more humid as we work our way to the weekend. all is quiet on doppler. that's the way it will stay until late tomorrow afternoon. it is much warmer from st. louis and down towards atlanta. much more humid as well. this is the year that we will be marching towards the east coast. coming ahead of this storm system here. in the meantime, on top of us, high pressure dominating. it is creating onshore flow which only kept news the 70s. but tomorrow as the front gets closer, the winds will shift. they will start to go southwesterly. this will bring in warm weather d humid weather and then as the day goes on, the front starts to get closer to the area. and raerlt, we will start to see

the chance of some showers and thunderstorms but this won't happen until late in the day. so late day storms and then overnight, that's when the bulk of the moisture comes through and, in fact, by sunday, the front kicks on out of here. all right. here's the deal. for this evening, partlcloudy. temperatures on the mild side this evening. temperatures for the most part in the 70s. and then by early tomorrow morning, we are dropping it down into the lower and mid 60s under partly cloudy skies. we will call it warm, mild, sunrise tomorrow morning at 5:53 in the morning. during the day we are going to start toee an increase in cloud coverage as the front gets a little bit closer and as the front gets closer that's when we are going to start to see at least a threat of showers and storms. especially late in the day. first, it is going to happen out west. and then as t day goes on, front moves closer, those storms will move eastward. most of tomorrow is dry. but again, by late tomorrow afternoon, and into the evening hours, that's when we can add showers and storms. that's your forecast. we are going to have your 7-day

police say that same man barricaded himself inside of another house near valley view avenue and davis avenue. they say he has two people inde as hostages and the stand-off at the house is now in its third hour, we are told. we will have the latest the hostage situation coming up on "news4 at 5:00." this afternoon a fresh start for general motors. the automaker pulled out of bankruptcy today. earlier than a lot of people expect. >> gm says the next goal is making money and building cars that people are eager to buy. kristen dahlgren has that story. >> president and ceo of general motors. >> after just 40 days -- >> excite day for general motors. today marks the beginning of a new company. >> reporter: general motors emerged from bankruptcy. a new company with new owners. >> frankly, 330 million shareholders, the u.s. citizens. >> reporter: the new gm is more than 60% owned by the u.s. government. and a much smaller version of its former self.

still not cracking the top five highest quality cars. jd power initiative quality study came out and named these five cars as the best. toyota, hyundai, nissan, lexus. toyota won the most awards. they were spread across the other brands, though like lexus and scion. the study found ford, chrysler and gm made big improvements but for some reason they haven't been able to top some of the foreign brands. the former fiancee of alaska governor sarah palin's 18-year-old daughter says the palin is resigning because of money. levi johnson believes the governor is calling it quits over personal finances. he claims that palin said how nays it would be to take advantage of lucrative deals that were being offered, including a reality show and a book. palin does have a book deal but details have not been disclosed. the governor said she's facing more than $500,000 in legal fees. a palin spokesman is refuting johnston's claims. illinois senator burris said

he's loved serving in washington but will not run for a full term next year because of the difficulty in raising money for a campaign. burris made the announcement this afternoon in chicago. >> so today i have returned to the place where my political journey began back in 1978, south side of chicago, and back to my community and my constituency. to announce my plans that i will not be a candidate in 2 the 2010 election. and that i will not run for the united states senate seat. >> burris was appointed by former illinois governor rod blagojevich who was removed from office in january and faced his corruption charges for allegedly trying to sell off that senate seat. burris has denied any involvement that many believe his ties to the governor may have doomed his senate career. still ahead on "news4 at 4:00," new workout helps women

good afternoon, everyone. it was a great way to end a great week. today a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the upper 70s. we had a northeasterly flow which kept us cooler than average. for tonight here is the situation. temperatures dropping down into the mid 60s, under partly cloudy skies. and a few -- by early tomorrow morning, the upper 50s. then tomorrow the winds shift.

they become more southwesterly and becomes more hume and i had temperatures climbing into the mid 80s. and 87 degrees here in the district. then we have a chance of seeing some thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon especially west of town. and, in fact, some of them could be on the strong to severe side around martinsburg and areas north and west. then as the evening goes on and as the front sweeps through, that's when we have a chance of storms in the beltway. if you are heading off towards the bay or beach tomorrow, looks like a great day. temperatures in the mid 80s. a little bit cooler out to the beach on saturday. but still very nice. on sunday that's when we have a chance of a shower or storm during the morning hours. so here is the extended forecast. tomorrow 87, more humid and, again, chance of late-day storm. on sunday a chance of an early morning storm. we start to clear things out and most of sunday is dry. likewise, most of saturday but here comes another disturbance for monday that can bring us a better chance of showers and storms. that's your forecast. more weather in just a few minutes.
