temperatures are still in the mid-80s. a few spots in the mid-70s now. no rain in our immediate future, however, the yellow shaded area that you see there that does include the d.c. metro area for your sunday, that's a slight risk for severe weather coming in tomorrow, late afternoon, evening time frame. could go into the late night hours tomorrow night. sizzling forecast, jim. more than a dozen wildfires are roaring through oklahoma tonight, and in a stunning development, authorities are looking for a man who might have set one on purpose by throwing flaming newspapers out of a truck window. news 4's darcy spencer has more on the destruction left behind. darcy? >> reporter: the wildfires have destroyed dozens of homes, thousands of people evacuated, some returning to their homes to find nothing but smolderring rubble. authorities, as you say, say one of those blazes may have been set. there are more than a dozen

blazes burning across oklahoma. they've scorched 80,000 acres a midst the driest conditions the state has ever seen. >> this is what's left of our house. it's just dust and ash, really. >> victoria escaped the flames with her seven children and little else. >> there's nothing. it's just really sad. >> reporter: residents of these burned-out communities say the fire damage is worse than the devastation caused by a tornado. >> i would take ten tornadoes before i would take one of these, because with tornadoes, at least you can walk around and find some things that are left over, but the heat and the flame gets in this and it just eats it up. >> reporter: oklahoma governor mary fallon toured part of the disaster area saturday morning. >> we're very thankful we haven't had any loss of life or any loss of firefighters. >> reporter: authorities say one of the fires in luther may have been the act of an arsonist. there are reports a man was seen tossing a flaming newspaper out

of a pickup truck friday afternoon. >> we were able to salvage some of our stuff. i'm still pretty numb from it. this is the house i grew up in, so it's pretty hard to see everything gone. >> reporter: officials say right now the focus is on firefighting and preventing those flames from spreading, but there is concern low humidity, high winds and dry conditions will only fuel those flames. jim, back to you. >> darcy, thanks. the man accused of shooting representative gabrielle giffords wants to go to a trial. they say he's mentally competent to understand the charges against him. else accused of opening fire at a giffords meet and greet in tucson. 6 people died, giffords was critically injured. a judge will ultimately decide whether to accept the plea deal. details haven't been released

yet. the unsolved murder of a north virginia team is now getting a second look. the 14-year-old went missing ten years ago in ashburn. her body was later found in what's now redskins park. the sheriff believes now she knew her killer. they're hoping forensic technology will help put the case to rest. virginia governor bob mcdonnell says the presiderepub ticket is nearly complete. the potential vp candidate said mitt romney will pick a running mate in just a couple days. it's one of the most anticipated announcements of the 2012 presidential race, and mcdonnell is on the short list with tim pawlenty, marco rubio.

the wife of illinois congressman jesse jackson, jr. is revealing new information tonight about her husband's hospitalization for depression. jackson's wife told the chicago sun times that her husband collapsed at his d.c. home two months ago.

she said doctors are now considering the possibility that jackson's depression is linked to his weight loss procedure in 2004. the congressman is being treated right now at the mayo clinic in minnesota. former u.s. senator larry craig is trying to fend off a lawsuit arguing that an infamous bathroom break occurred on work time. the federal commission sued craig in june. the they said he used $200,000 campaign money for his legal defense. craig said the bathroom trip was covered because he was traveling from idaho to washington, d.c. for work. he pleaded guilty for disorderly conduct and the bathroom encounter. president obama celebrating his 51st birthday today at camp david before heading to the presidential retreat, the president played a round of golf with friends at andrews air force base. on monday he goes back to the campaign trail in connecticut.

strong to severe storms at that, are becoming more likely as they get to the late afternoon and evening time frame for tomorrow. nothing to happen here for the overnight hours, but just to show you how charged up the atmosphere is, there are thunderstorms across much of northern and central parts of ohio. these will not necessarily be bothering us, but the impulse driving those storms tonight will be down across our area as we get into the day tomorrow. so that is the reason why no more than spotty storms in your area will be coverage storms tomorrow. some could get one to two inches of rain in a hurry. showers might linger until drive home from work time on monday afternoon. if you're going to the beach on your sunday, hot. stormy weather most likely at the beaches on monday. if you're sticking around town, it looks like sunday night is going to be the best chance for stronger thunderstorms. overnight tonight, nothing to worry about. passing clouds and muggy.
