>> for our viewers living in the shenandoah valley and around the blue ridge, loudoun county as well under this freezing rain advisory. that's all of these counties you see in pink. fa falkier, panhandle of west virginia up towards hagers town, the 81 corridor. all around the region, we're going to have rain getting closer to us as we get into the evening hours. we'll have that rain approaching from the north and west. we'll have some of the pavement here below freezing. as a result we may get up to a tenth of an inch of icing. right now getting a little bit of semisleet and maybe a little bit of freezing rain. i'll have the timing here. we'll update that in just a

it's a great time to download the nbc washington app and turn on weather alerts. chopper 4 is live over some breaking news in montgomery county. at least one person stabbed at the westfield wheaton mall. we're working to find out more details. we don't know the extent of the injuries or whether police have made any arrests. >> there is an incredible police activity going on there right now. it's also impacting metro. there are delays right now on the red line in that area due to all the police activity. we're going to continue to follow this story. we're also following breaking news from prince george's county where a former council member is pleading guilty in a federal corruption

probe. >> will campos used taxpayer money to line his own pockets and accepted bribes. tracee wilkins is live in greenbelt. >> reporter: we know this is all related to the arrest we saw yesterday with the prince george's county liquor board. and today just inside of that building the us attorney for maryland laid out the case here the feds have against will campos. he served on the prince george's county council from 2004 to 2014. police say during that time, he received kickbacks from businessmen in exchange for county grants. the us attorney says campos collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes. he was wearing a wire and under investigation by the fbi from 2012 to 2014. while the u.s. attorney would not go into detail, it appears the arrest

connected to the liquor board investigation that landed liquor board commissioner and also the director of the board in jail. the u.s. attorney says campos funneled the money through a nonprofit organization and even suggested that players make up nonprofits, assuring them they could get money. >> he arranged to accept bribes in return for directing county council funds taxpayer money to supposed nonprofit organizations. mr. campos's favorite charity was himself. and the reason why he approved particular nonprofit organizations was that those organizations agreed or their representatives agreed to pay ki kickbacks to mr. campos. >> reporter: in a statement that will campos released to news4 first he said i amly

this process has been tortuous and i am learning so much about my life and myself. hear how this is connected to the prince george's county liquor board investigation. during the press conference the fbi said it is important that if officials or business leaders in prince george's county have accepted bribes in recent years, that they come to the fbi before they go to them. reporting live in greenbelt, i'm tracee wilkins. first at 4:00, president obama is sailing out of office with his best approval rates in seven years. a new quinnipiac poll finds voters approve of his job performance 55-39%. those same voters disapprove of the way donald trump is handing the job of president-elect. 51% disapprove, while 37% approve.

i'm susan hogan at the live desk. more than $4 billion in fines, the auto manufacturer is calling this a concrete draft settlement with the u.s. over the diesel emissions scandal. volkswagon says it's in advanced discussions with the us department of justice and u.s. customs and border protection officials. it is part of a guilty plea on the basis of more than $4 billion in criminal and civil fines. volkswagon says this settlement is suggest to the company's management and supervis supervis approval. right now a jury is weighing whether or not to give the death penalty to the man who admitted taking nine lives when he opened fire during a bible study at a church in charleston, south ca

two hours ago in dylann roof's trial. >> reporter: within the last couple of minutes we learned that the jury just came back, asking the judge a couple of questions. they wanted to also see a video of reverend clemente pickney preaching at the church. diylann roof told jurors he had to kill the nine members of emanuel a.m.e. church. he said i still feel the same. dylann roof's fate now lies in the hands of the jury. prosecutors called dylann roof cold and calculated as they made their closing arguments to the jury today, recounting the lives of the charleston nine and em

popular -- imploring jurors. he said, i felt like i had to do it. i still feel like i have to do it. now the case is in the hand of the jury, the same federal jury that convicted roof last month. prosecutors called more than two dozen witnesses and showed jurors family photos of the victims enjoying life. one by one, relatives and friends told heart wrenching stories of their love and loss. system of the most harrowing testimony came from the widow of reverent clemente pickney. roof representatied himself. he told the jury during opening statements, quote, there's nothing wrong with me

psychologically. in a journal he wrote, i do not regret what i did. i have not shed a tear for the innocent people i killed. and while the prosecution has been pushing for the death penalty all along, dylann roof has made it clear he wants life in prison, even telling jurors today in closing arguments, it only takes one of you to disagree. that of course would result in a mistrial and for dylann roof an aud automatic prison sentence. it is a storm team 4 weather alert day. depending on where you live, it could be pretty bad out there. >> right now we are getting a light little bit of light icing part to the north and west. right now all these areas in pink under this freezing rain

1:00 a.m. all this area here, laudoudoun coun county, points north and west could get up to almost a tenth of an inch of icing. some of these roads are below freezing. getting a little bit of light freezing rain right along the 81 corridor. changes over to light snow in the gray area here near hagerstown. we do have this one line of rain here in the midwest. it's coming into the tennessee valley and chimeka kentucky ando valley. the new hour by hour timing showing that not arrive into the shenandoah valley until about 10:00 tonight. that's when we're likely going to see the bulk of the icing. then it gets closer to washington about 11:00 p.m. in our western and northern suburbs. then it pulls off to the east and we dry out.

sunshine for tomorrow morning. temperatures right now, though, are below freezing or at freezing where they are getting a little bitt icing north and west of us. it will be hovering near 50 in the afternoon tomorrow when you're heading back hope. as we get into thursday morning, maybe a little bit of light rain, then some sun back and much milder temperatures. it will be near 50 tomorrow, but in the mid 60s on thursday afternoon. then on friday in the upper 40s to near 50. then on saturday we could get a wintery mix. it's looking more like morning snow changing to midday sleet and afternoon icing during the day on saturday. then drying out sunday. it looks fairly nice as we get into dr. king day and the rest of the week. right now we're waiting to hear an update near manassas where frozen

yesterday we didn't make it out of the 20s. today we're in the 30s. mostly everybody in the 30s. i think we've got a couple of 29s out there. warmer today, warmer tomorrow and even more mild as we get into thursday. we do have a freezing rain advisory. it's not for the district or the beltway or fairfax county. but areas to the west. loudoun county, northern montgomery county, along i-81. that's where we're seeing a little bit of ice right now. just a little bit can do a lot of harm. we are getting verification that we're seeing a little bit of freezing rain along i-81. this is causing some problems out there.

but i also think putting the current politics into perspective, i don't think we're going to see any explicit digs at the president-elect, but i do think you'll have some contrast president obama will be making of what he actually hopes the trump administration should be doing. >> let's turn to the incoming trump administration and the senate confirmation hearings. jeff sessions is on the hill. will any of trump's picks realistically have a tough road? >> you know, it depends on how you define a tough road. i think they're all going to get tough questions. there probably will be a significant number of democrats who won't vote for these people. are any of these people going to not get confirmed by the senate? the answer is probably not. tou you have to go back to

charleston south carolina church. we understand there is a verdict on the sentence. >> this is the sentencing phase. so his attorney -- his defense attorneys have never really gone in any lengthy defenses to say he didn't do it. they have tried to really focus their attention on the sentencing and try to spare him the death penalty. of course he has recently taken control of his own defense and made some very pointed statements saying he had to do it. >> facing the death penalty, we'll see how that turns out and report that as soon as we get the details. a young father in montgomery county is held in jail right now accused of shaking his 5 month old son so violently it resulted in the baby's death last fall. the father was arrested just yesterday. >> reporter: 20-year-old roger

temperatures, especially with those areas that got a little bit of snow. now we're seeing a little bit of wind as well. what you need to look forward o to, because we do have some warming temperatures by thursday, but not today. we've got that freezing rain advisory in place. temperatures are going to rise overnight and that rain will be out of here by your morning commute tomorrow morning. then we have another round of rain tomorrow afternoon. and then a mix of saturday after we warm up. a lot of things going on in the weather. let's start with our freezing rain advisory. starts at 6:00 p.m. tonight, goes until just after midnight for areas west of d.c.

less than a tent h or an inch bt even a little bit could create a lot of problems out there. north and west of town right around hagerstown it's breaking up, but we could have a little bit of freezing rain. it is going to be moving to the north and west. this is just a little isolated piece. we've got more rain back off to the west that will eventually fall as rain and freeze on contact because that surface temperature has been so cold all day long. you're probably wondering why is it just falling as freezing rain, why not snow. our temperatures certainly cold enough. what's happening is we have some warm air in the upper levels of the atmosphere. so it's falling as rain. as soon as it hits some of those surfaces it is going to stick and turn into ice. not an issue for d.c., but

temperatures will go up overnight. we're going to be in the 50s tomorrow. rain by late tomorrow afternoon. at 11:00 p.m. tonight, again, some rain and freezing rain continuing to fall. if your traveling take you west of town, you are going to find spots of freezing rain. rain will continue through the overnight but out of here by the morning commute. tomorrow evening we could have some more rain. thursday looking dry, but at least we will be in the 60s. mild and dry for thursday. that ten-day forecast coming up at 5:00. the national park service is looking to update its smoking policy to include a ban on electronic cigarettes. the current policy allows smoking in certain areas of national parks. the proposed revision would add

we are working developing stories right now. a warning to residents in loudoun county after a rash of gun thefts. ahead in our next hour, what police say gun owners are doing to make it easier for thieves to steal their weapons. >> reporter: in loudoun county dozens if not hundreds of paraphernali parents teacher and opportunities are expected to rally here urging the board to reinstate a popular principal who's received a termination notice. this was the rally last friday outside of dominion high school on behalf of dr. john brewer. it's believed his support of a former dominion band instructor who got in hot water first in loudoun county and later in florida is the cause for the termination notice. but not everyone at dominion is in the stand with brewer .

dylann roof was convicted of killing nine black church goers in charleston, south carolina. we're also learning new details about the man who shot and killed an orlando police officer. >> police are now offering $100,000 for information leading to his capture. nbc's has more on the suspect's violent criminal past. >> reporter: a massive manhunt through the night, but no sign of markeith loyd, a man police called desperate and extremely dangerous, on the run of allegedly gunning down master sergeant debra clayton. police say clayton, a 17-year veteran of the force approached loyd after receiving a tip that he was in the area. >> when he realized that he wasn't going to be able to get around this officer, he pulled a gun and started
