two girls were next in line for that ride and saw it all happened. blake mccoy in columbus with the overnight developments nft investigation. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: one person is dead this morning, seven others injured after this twisting and turning amusement park ride unexpectedly broke apart at a high rate of speed. we do want to warn you that some of the video you are about to see is disturbing. >> the whole ride just broke, people just fell out. >> reporter: overnight something went horribly wrong at the ohio state fair, a swinging ride called the fire ball ripping into pieces sending passengers crashing into to the ground. >> the ride broke. >> i saw the pieces fly off. >> at least one individual has come off a ride at the fairgrounds. >> reporter: what was supposed to be a night of fun instantly turning into chaos and confusion. kayleigh bellamy says she was next in line and saw the whole thing happen. >> it was going for a minute and

like it was at its highest point and i saw somebody fall out of the ride. >> this is just a real tragedy. >> more than a half dozen injured riders were taken to nearby hospitals. >> multiple passengers were ejected at high speed with high energy, many feet, at least 20 or 30 if not more into the air and then crashed at a significant distance from the ride. >> reporter: ohio's governor, john kasich, ordering a full investigation. >> what i want to know immediately is first of all what are we doing with rides? so we shut all the rides down. and then beyond that we want to know about what's the process for inspection. >> reporter: authorities say the ride had been thoroughly inspected. >> it's been looked at about three or four times over the course of two days. >> reporter: the fair began wednesday with 11 other rides closed because their inspections were not complete. though some opened later on. this 2012 video shows how the

decks drop, these center decks, when this ride is in motion so they have to check the hinging, they have to check the structural soundness. >> reporter: it has to be sound because it spins and swings in a pendulum. >> oh, my god, she's bleeding. >> reporter: the combination creating an aggressive thrill ride that this morning is a deadly one. records show the fire ball passed inspection just yesterday and a few parts were replaced back in may. governor john kasich is set to tour the fairgrounds here later this morning. now, of the seven people injured, three of them are in critical condition. savannah and carson. >> so many questions. thank you so much. >> in a statement the fair organizers said their hearts are heavy for the families involved. brittany and kylie neil were next in line for that ride when the accident occurred and they are with us now along with their mom christy. good morning to you guys. i'm sure you did not have a restful night. brittany, let me start with you, you and

line. just walk us through what you saw and what you heard. >> well, the ride was going as normal and then all of a sudden you see people flying out and then the guy hit the emergency stop button which then made the seat fly off and other people flew off as well. >> kylie, what did you see? i can only imagine how terrifying this must have been. >> me and my sister were waiting in line and then the fire ball was working normally and then it swing to the left and it looked like someone's chair was kind of falling out and then the guy pushed the emergency stop switch and then it swing to the right and the whole row just broke off and they went flying. >> christy, let me ask you, you and your husband tom were at the fair at another part of it. i imagine your phone rings. walk hr

girls called you. >> oh, we were getting a backpack to put some of the things that we had gotten earlier that day in and i get a call, my daughter is historical, i can't even understand what she's saying. i knew something terrible had happened. i didn't know if her sister was okay, i just ran towards the direction of the rides. there were two state troopers beside me, i don't know if they had even heard anything at that point, and i said something terrible has happened, my daughters are -- i need to find my daughters, and it was -- it was horrible. i didn't know where my girls were, i had actually gotten to the ride before i had gotten to my girls and seen the cart off and it was just -- it was

to serve in the u.s. military. this sparked immediate protests and speculation that there's more to this announcement than meets the eye. we have complete coverage from the white house. then we will talk to former secretary of the army eric fanning. let us begin with kristen welker. >> reporter: good morning. as a candidate president trump said he would be a friend of the lgbtq community, but now that promise. mr. trump reversing yet another obama era policy by banning transgender service members, prompting anger and protests. this morning president trump facing a growing backlash after unexpectedly banning transgender military. angry protesters rallying in cities across the country. >> outrageous. >> reporter: including new york city where a crowd gathered in front of the army recruiting building in times square. it was

president made in a series of tweets, calling the tremendous medical costs a burden. >> it's a preposterous. it's terrible. >> reporter: kristen beck served as a navy s.e.a.l. for more than two decades and came out as transgender after leaving the military. she calls the new policy disrespectful. >> for him to do this for all those people currently serving in war zones it's a huge slap in the case. >> reporter: anger on capitol hill. >> i want a strong, vibrant military but i want to be fair. the best way to do this is have a hearing not a tweet. >> the pentagon speds five times more on viagra than it does for transition-related care. >> reporter: the white house says the president made the decision based on military readiness, but it comes as republicans were trying to pass a spending bill which included more money for a key trump priority, building a border wall. passage of the bill was held up by a fight over funds for medical care for transgender groups. congressional sources tell nbc news house leaders asked the

even they weren't expecting an all out ban. still some lawmakers supportive. >> i'm very pleased that we will be able to spend our precious defense dollars modernizing our military. >> reporter: while defense secretary james mattis wasi= alerted, some in the military were caught off guard and this mornings neither the pentagon nor the white house can say how or when the new policy will be implemented and whether current transgender troops will be immediately discharged. as a candidate mr. trump vowed to fight for the lgbtq community. >> i will do everything in my power to protect our lgbtq citizens. >> reporter: now those words haunting him. caitlyn jenner tweeting, there are 15,000 patriotic transgender americans in the u.s. military fighting for all of us. what happened to your promise to fight for them? >> reporter: a recent study estimates gender transition-rela m

to .to to .13% increase. the military hasn't released exact numbers for transgender service members, but since last year's ban was lifted several hundred have requested medical care, but by some estimates there are several thousand currently serving. so far the defense secretary hasn't publicly commented on this new policy. >> kristen welker, thank you so much. policy. savannah. >> kristen, thank you so much. for more we're joined by eric fanning first openly gay leader of any military branch. secretary, good morning. good to see you. >> good morning. thanks for having me. >> first, your reaction. your reaction in your gut when you heard this ruling. >> many reactions, i think. i was disappointed, i was angry. frankly, i was shocked the commander in chief would turn his back on thousands of patriotic americans serving today. >> let me be devil's advocate because likely you don't like this decision. there are americans who think, wait anu

pentagon, the military paying for this kind of surgery, this kind of care. what would the response be to that? >> my response is that it's a medical issue. if someone is qualified to serve, raises his or her right hand, makes that commitment to possibly put their life on the line, one of the things they get as a part of that commitment is health care. we treat this, we should treat this like any other medical issue. >> the white house has not said anything about whether this applies right now to those currently serving. so if you are a transgender individual, for example, possibly serving in afghanistan right now, how does that person feel? what is that person supposed to do? what steps would you recommend they take? >> first of all, many of us are asking questions about what this means and how you implement what it might mean, which is one of the reasons we don't tweet policy. we think through it thoughtfully, carefully, explain what it is and have a plan hu to implement it. but i think if y

transgender service member anywhere in the world, you are already nervous by what you're hearing. now you're probably very confused and very frightened about what future holds for you when your commander in chief tweets a message like this basically dismissing your service. >> the president spoke of the burden of these medical costs. we just spoke about that a little bit. also the disruption trans genders cause. that was his tweet. can you address those issues? >> first of all, i've never seen any evidence it support the numbers used to skplap how much this would cost. in an in telectro, it said it would increase 1. %. that's the high end. as low as 0.04%. i don't know where these larger numbers are coming from. in terms of burden, i wouldn't want to try and guess what the president means by that, but the only disruption i can think about in this entire conversation is the disruption

trained service members who are deployed, working, performing their duties with distinction and discharging them. that's going to be disruptive to the force. that's going to be very disruptive to readiness. >> finally, i have to ask you the way this all happened on twitter in realtime, the president had one tweet that said after consultation with my generals and military experts, please be advised the united states will not accept or allow... the nine minutes passes before the next that states what this is going to be. if you were still in your old job at the pentagon, what would you have thought waiting for that second tweet? >> i wouldn't have known, i wouldn't have been concerned. i wouldn't have thought it was about the transgender issue, i would have thought it was geopolitical. lucky for me, i saw all the tweet at the same time so

meant. >> thank you. appreciate it. another tweet from the white house getting a lot of attention. this came from the new communications director but quickly deleted. peter alexander has more on that. peter, good morning. >> good morning. the white house not afraid to air their dirty laundry. first the president attacking his attorney general. now tweet from incoming communications director anthony scaramucci lashing out at chief of staff reince priebus. a private feud now spilling out into the public. this morning the man tasked on taking on leakers at the white house suggesting he was the district of one after newly appointed communications director financial disclosure form showing the financier has assets of $85 million. scaramucci calling the tweet a felony sending a tweet that's now deleted. in light of the leak of my financial disclosure info, which is a

justice department. #swamp. he then includes the twitter handle of white house chief of staff reince priebus leaving meaning to question whether scaramucci was accusing priebus of the leak. scaramucci following up with another tweet overnight. wrong, tweet was public notice to leakers that all senior administration officials are helping to end illegal leaks, including priebus's handle again. the controversy comes amid another swing and a miss from republicans. >> yays 45, nays 55, the agreement not agreed to. >> reporter: their latest pitch to overhaul obamacare without replacement failing. today will try to rally support for skinny appeal eliminating the maybe date individuals buy insurance and large businesses provide it as well as erasing medical devices. that falls fall short of the promise to repeal and replace. now the

birmingham. a real mess. there were high water rescues. we have more strong storms coming in and they will be making their way into the mid-atlantic states. look at the radar right now firing up kansas city all the way into indianapolis. for tomorrow we have a risk of strong storms for 24 million people from d.c. down to charleston, atlanta and knoxville. these are fast moving storms. and as this system develops tomorrow afternoon severe storms ahead of it from pittsburgh, washington, new york city and then it's going to develop along the coast and cause a lot of heavy rain and in fact some areas could pick up up to six inches of rain from the an lay chance all the way into the dell marv have a peninsula. we will be watching this going into the weekend. could be a bit of a washout for much of the northeast this weekend. we will get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

here in atlanta just yet. ten u.s. airports so far, but the tsa plans to roll out the new screening procedures at all domestic airports in the coming weeks and months. authorities believed that terrorists are finding better ways to hide explosives inside electronics. this morning the tsa says tighter screening rules are coming to irpts a across the country with agents taking a closer look at personal electronics. that could mean longer wait times and increased frustration. >> i think there are a lot of different ways we can address homeland security. i don't necessarily know it's through my kindle. >> reporter: while passengers have been required to remove laptop computers from their carry yons for years the new screening procedures mean any device larger than a cellphone must also go into a separate bin. >> it's a minor convenience, but if it will help i'm all for it. >> reporter: the rules now in place at ten u.s. airports including boston, detroit

and as we take a look it's been really hot around a good portion of the country today and the last couple of days, but we are seeing a change. milder highs coming in, hot and humid weather down through the gulf coast. so ahead of this front it's still going to be hot. dallas 100, memphis 94, new orleans 93. behind it nice and comfortable with temperatures in the low 80s from chicago to dodge city. tomorrow cooler air makes its way further south, 78 in pittsburgh, tupelo 87. by saturday much more mild weather throughout much of the country although still kind of hot as you get down into southern florida and the southern gulf coast. that's what's going on around the country, here is what's happening in your neck of the woods. good morning. 73 degrees right now. so it is comfortable outside, a little bit more humid with a south wind, clouds are going to stay around through the day today, already seeing pretty much overcast skies. currently, though, the rest of the area about the upper 60s to low 70s, still comfortable but a little warmer through the day today.

longer courses there are some examples of that, tuberculosis and things like that, but i think it's very important especially for the viewers to understand that the messaging is not necessarily just stop the antibiotics when you're feeling better, sometimes people do feel better in the first 24 to 48 hours after taking antibiotics. i know we say this a lot on air but this is definitely one of those situations where you want to communicate with your healthcare provider about the duration of antibiotics therapy. >> do healthcare providers know it? >> and that's the thing. if you are a healthcare provider living in a bubble and driving ten days for everything because it's convention and it's unambiguous, take it until the course is completed, for example, then it's really moving away the guidelines are moving away from that. again, longer term antibiotics you will find interesting out there, parents, kids under the anyone of two or ear infections a longer course is indicated when it's bacterial, people who have tuberc
