April 20th, 2022 --
The series may have already been won, but Cleveland meant business today with an unbelievable come-from-behind victory starting in the ninth inning.
All game, Amaury Cook absolutely frustrated Indians hitters with a deadly slider that they could barely make contact on. Despite Cook's previous struggles, he was dealing in this game and even maintained a no-hitter until the fifth inning.
Breaking up the no-hitter was not enough for the Cleveland Indians to produce runs, however. Cook continued to be a problem, striking out batters and sending them down one after the other.
The game was once again another pitching duel until the Reds scored a run in innings six through eight, giving them a 3-0 lead. All seemed well for them as the Indians were still struggling to drive in a run or even get more than a single runner on base.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, this changed completely.
Two singles from Herm Almanza and Aron Debarr put runners at first and third for the first time in the game with no one out. Vince Britten came to the plate and hit an RBI sacrifice fly, scoring the Indians' first run. This also ended Amaury Cook's great outing. Replacing him was relief pitcher Christy Frandsen, who had a drastically different pitching style compared to Cook's. This was thought to put Cincinnati at an advantage, but they were soon to find out it was to the Indians' benefit.
Marvin Fok singled, then Casey Chick belted an RBI single for his first hit of the game two at-bats later. This narrowed the Reds' lead to just one run, 3-2.
Hi Berger, who had been hitless in this series and coming off an astonishing 14-inning relief appearance, slapped a game-tying single into center field to a thunderous roar from the home crowd. They not only applauded the hit that tied the score, they were also applauding Hi Berger for ending his hitless streak and rallying the team around him.
After a strikeout of Edgardo Boehringer, the game would see extra innings for the second time in this series.
Trever Crotta led off in the bottom of the tenth after the Reds were unsuccessful in regaining the lead, singling down the line into left field. Herm Almanza capitalized on this auspicious start with a single of his own, which had rolled far enough to allow Crotta to stretch it to third. With no one out, runners were at the corners with Aron Debarr batting next. He did not deliver for the Indians, hitting a shallow fly ball into right field for an out. Vince Britten, the man who provided the initial spark for Cleveland, stepped up and hit the ball straight to the middle and won the game for them with a theatrical walk-off single.
While the Indians lost the series, they regained the support of their fans for not giving up and continuing to fight until victory was in their grasp. With a tough series behind them, it's time for Cleveland to rebound and gain some ground in the AL Central - attempting to keep pace with Minnesota and Detroit.
