i can mention madeleine albright is an excellent example. she was the u.s. secretary of state but also from prague. president biden: we know it all the time. mr. fiala: and most importantly, we share the same values, human rights, freedom, democracy, and we need to deal with challenges like russian aggression in ukraine, terrorism, difficult situation in the middle east. and in such a situation, the security cooperation between democratic country is a must. mr. president, i appreciate your leadership in support of ukraine. we are also doing our best to help you and stop putin's aggression. in 1968, i was a little boy. in 1968, i saw russian tanks in the streets of my town, and i don't want to see this again. so we must continue to help ukraine as long as possible and why we started the czech ammunition initiative to provide ukraine with hundreds of thousands of artillery shells very soon. it will happen in the next few weeks or months. and also with most ukrainian refugees per capita in europe may be in the world. the international situation is very difficul

mission will be renaming its executive conference room after madeleine albright, our 64th secretary of state. many of you knew her. i know you did. and the first woman to ever serve in that role in the united states. now, as many of you know, secretary albright played a crucial role in advocating for nato enlargement, leading to the inclusion of several central and eastern european countries. she also championed nato's involvement in conflict resolution and peacekeeping efforts, particularly during the balkan wars of the 1990's. albright's diplomatic success and strategic vision strengthened nato's role as a cornerstone of transatlantic security cooperation and it is so fitting that we honor her tonight, particularly with so many of my u.s. colleagues here that had a very close and special relationship with secretary albright, including secretary blinken and former colleagues jim o'brien, jamie reuben and suzy george among others. second, i'd like to draw your attention to a very unique item that we've borrowed from the nato archives, and this one might surprise you a little bit. nato'

ndi, led by our dear former chair, madeleine albright, who we miss every day, began work years ago to address gender-based violence in politics because our work around the world has shown that, even as we give women the skills and the confidence to engage in political participation, even as we remove the barriers to women's political participation, they then face disproportionate attacks on social media, physical attacks. and that deters women from remaining in the political process. if that's true for women who were not already survivors of gender-based violence, and imagine the impact if you are a survivor of conflict based sexual violence and then want to engage in politics in the post-conflict time. for us at ndi, what this has meant his building into a lot of our day-to-day program -- programmatic work. trauma infirmed -- so we can address the needs of our participants, where they are. as well as, working in our programs with local partners on solutions that they can develop in bringing survivors to help develop those solutions to combat gender-based violence so that these surviv

i think madeleine albright, our first female secretary of state, said it best when she said, we know that when the democracies of europe and america are divided, crevices are created through which forces of evil and aggression may emerge, but when we stand together, there is no greater force than our solidarity on behalf of freedom. that's it, it is our solidarity, the solidarity that makes nato's stronger and has made nato one of the most successful alliances in history, and one that has made the alliance ready for tomorrow's challenges. thank you. i look forward to your questions. [applause] thank you. >> well, thank you, ambassador smith. thank you to everyone for being here. i'm david sanger from the new york times. just so you understand the order of the next few minutes, the ambassador and i are going to talk for about half an hour, and then we are going to go out to questions for everybody. there are a couple of microphones lined up where you can stand for your questions. thank you for this. thanks for coming all the way from brussels. great to see you again. we had offices ne
