[applause] but we still have much work to do. the state of our state is getting stronger. but i've always promised to be straight with you. it's my job to say when trouble is on the horizon. allow me to take a moment to describe the challenge before us. the national economy is stagnant, and the federal government on which our state has become so dependent over the years is faltering. weighed down by $16 trillion in debt. while new mexico has seen some job gapes in certain private -- job gains in certain private sector industries, there is no question that the number of government jobs is on the decline. last year new mexico lost more than 4,800 government jobs. 400 federal jobs in a single month. on top of that, many private sector companies that contrac
