so how do you go about creating specific voices for a jewish russian character by way of yokohama, for an african american character, for all these different characters? i know you worked with specific actors. did they help at all? what was the process there? . >> absolutely. in terms of the african american characters, i wrote this piece initially for the act core company and i thought it would be a great challenge to actually write a play for the core company and the core company has two african american characters and i had tailored two of the characters for steven anthony jones and gregry wallace. it's interesting that gregory wallace, an african american man, was supposed to play mr. oge, an excentric neisei who likes literature. i thought it would be an interesting thing to do. but after a while we did a reading and we realized as good an actor as gregory is, it was pushing his limits for him to play a japanese american character in the late 40's. >> i imagine him as being much older. >> in the course of writing the play and using various actors, he became younger. this chinese a

my husband and i are new residents of russian hill and originally from southern california. we have been coming as tourists to san francisco for a long time. we have enjoyed many parts of this city. the historical views are part of that. a couple of weeks ago, we went back to visit one of our favorite sites. when it arrived, we were surprised to discover that the views had been obstructed. i am not exactly clear on what the debt consists of, but i can tell you that on each end of the deck there are two structures that are big block structures that are tall enough that they obstruct the view of alcatraz and you cannot see above it. you cannot sit around it. so i am here today because i feel very strongly about preserving public views, especially the use of historic monuments. the lane has its own history. the views from the lane are the landmarks of other trends -- of alcatraz. they are the reason many people from the world walk-through and buy this land. it is on your city walks map of san francisco. because i grew up in southern california, a am acutely aware of how necessa

they're going to school in a russian, soviet, old armored personnel carrier. take a look inside. there's 12 ninth graders going to school learning english. the younger boys are going to school in a steel truck container used to bring over united states military supplies. 80 kids going to school in a truck container. the girls are outdoors going to school in the dirt with one mat one black board that keeps blowing down and they keep picking it up in the wind and one teacher. to me, the courage and hope that resonates when i see those kids - some of these young woman, walk 1/2 hours to get to school. it's time we need to help support them and that they have the opportunity and privilege to all go to school. so, i'm - sometimes people ask ar organization and the board mass upon derd this to say half of our staff is illiterate. why do you hire illiterate people to work with literacy organization. these men and women worked for a long time for us and they're willing to go in some of the most difficult, remote or dangerous areas to risk their lives year after year just to get one girl

i'm a resident of russian hill, since 2001. i live there with my two children, a 2-year-old and a 5-month-old in some time shortly my children will be left alone and unattended in their homes if that sounds crazy, before you have me arrested, know this. because of m.t.a.'s policy of not issuing residential permits to childcare providers. believe this is completely ridiculous, unsafe. our childcare provider must leave the house every two hours to shift her vehicle which could take up to 10 minutes or more. doing that five times a day means almost four hours a week children are left alone. i'm a member of the golden gate mothers group. we're 3,700 members in san francisco. many of us have expressed our frustration and written letters and emails to the m.t.a. first and foremost, obviously the safety issue. it's wrong. it's criminal, really. however, leaving the house with children to shift the vehicle is not practical on many levels, so they're forced to do this to avoid citations. secondly we believe the policy is unbalanced for
