i think the biggest concern, though, will continue to be this area of rain affecting scotland. in the grand scheme of things, 50 millimetres falling from this weather front over the mountains of western scotland isn't a huge amount, but given that we've got flood warnings already in force, the ground saturated after what fell over the weekend, then this rain could cause some further extra issues. it does trickle southwards, reaching northern ireland and the far north of england, as well, late tuesday afternoon. south of that, it's very warm again. once we've lost those mist and fog patches, temperatures could hit 2a degrees in the warmest spots. now, tuesday night sees this band of rain pull away from scotland, so hopefully things will begin to improve here, to a degree. but we've got some heavier rain setting in place further southwards across england and wales, and this rain band through wednesday slowly moves across wales, the midlands, into east anglia, perhaps not reaching the far south until after dark, where it will continue to be warm, with temperatures in the low 20s.

the red warnings, yes, it is focused across eastern scotland, but the other areas of northern scotland where some communities could see some severe flooding impacts. but there is more concentrated red weather warning area is where the rain will be so extreme that we could actually get some communities getting completely cut off by the flood waters, and i have to say, through friday and into friday night, we also have some amber weather warnings burger southwards. why is all this happening? as you mentioned, samantha, it is all down to storm babet, and essentially, this area of low pressure brings mild air that mixes with the cold air we have in scandinavia, gritting this weather front and some very strong winds that have been pummelling eastern scotland, and that is that runs that can't move because of this blocking area of high pressure so get stuck in the same area with that torrential rain falling hour after hour after hour. flooding is the main concern, particularly across northern and eastern scotland, parts of eastern england, but we're also seeing some gusts of wind today switch

i think the heaviest rain will tend to pull northwards across scotland. something a little bit drier developing for some of those central and southern parts. further south, some clear spells. there'll be some mist and fog patches, too. a mild night for many but quite cold in the far north of scotland, particularly shetland, just to the north of this weather front. as we head into sunday, this front will still be plaguing some northern parts of the uk but the heaviest rain this time will be across the far north of scotland and into 0rkney. further south, just that little bit drier. and for northern ireland, england and wales, any early mist and fog should tend to clear. it could stay a bit murky for some coasts but we will see some spells of sunshine. not quite as warm on sunday — still up to around 23 degrees, 12 for stornoway and for aberdeen. now, the new week starts on a warm note, particularly down towards the south, but as we head through the middle part of the week, this active weather front is set to push southwards and that will introduce northâ

the winds are strengthening out towards the east coast of scotland. gusts of wind here of around 70mph. the winds lightening towards the south. it's turning drier here. it is a mild start to the day but, of course, the temperatures are largely academic. and so, that rain will continue to push northwards as we head through the morning. sunshine and showers, some of the showers possibly heavy and thundery across england and wales. the rain will start to turn very heavy, very persistent. it aligns with that strong southeasterly wind as we head through the day on thursday and it willjust keep coming as we come into thursday night and friday morning itself. so, that southeasterly wind driving more rain, acting as a kind of conveyor belt. and there are wider amber weather warnings in force across scotland as well, another one for rain across caithness and sutherland, and this one is for wind too. now, with that brisk southeasterly wind, it's not the prevailing wind direction, so there could be some trees down, likely to be some impacts from these strong, gu

still windy in north—east scotland. but for many northern parts of the uk, not as windy as it has been. temperatures north to south 8—16 degrees. now, this heavy rain continues into saturday evening but it will clear northwards overnight, this band of showery rain pushing away from eastern england and then, things do turn drier. yes, a few showers, i think there'll be some mist patches around as well, but a drier start to sunday morning as an area of low pressure tends to swirl away north—eastwards. and this very, very weak ridge of high pressure — you can't see much of it here on the weather chart but there is some slightly higher pressure just toppling through, and that means drierweather, more in the way of sunshine. yes, there will be some showers but certainly not as wet as it has been. lighter winds, temperatures of 12—16 degrees, so a much calmer day to end the weekend. but then, as we head into next week, well, another area of low pressure looks set to push up from the south. this one probably not as pot
