here's my reference to david broder. david broder for years canvassed the way political campaigns canvassed and would pick a specific neighborhood of political importance in a city or county and knock on doors, every single door. he would canvas the way campaigns did. he stopped doing that later in his career because people would stop opening their door. they were too nervous about it. but he found it an enormously valuable way to inform his columns and where things were, a perspective. i learned from that process and come to admire it and it is difficult and sometimes leaves viewers like you less and fully satisfied about what you're hearing but we still endeavor to do it because we know one thing, sitting in our office won't get it done. it may be imperfect but it's better than sitting in our office. >> i'll say one thing, major garrett. i worked with jack and sat 10 feet from him at "the baltimore sun" washington bureau and he absolutely said that. >> ok. good. >> fact check. >> peter, i'm just a moderator, a small de
