the folks at the dirksen congressional center in illinois have done extensive research to find that quote and it doesn't exist. it sounds like something he would have said but as a matter of fact he did not actually say that. this is my favorite photo from the book. again, dirksen in the middle of the picture, two pictures of dirksen, he has admiring his own portraits while mansfield peeks over his shoulder. you will notice in the back of the portrait is a bust of abraham lincoln, dirksen, very proud of the fact that he came from central illinois, a portion of the state that abraham lincoln had represented in congress in the 1840s, so you will notice the lapel that mansfield's jacket is his marine corps emblem which he wore probably every day of his public service. as far as we can tell, mike mansfield is the only member of congress ever to serve in three different branches of the us military. he lied his way into the navy at age 16, by falsifying his birth certificate in order to be able to enlist, served in the navy during world war i, later served in the army and eventually in the mari
